A learner driver was taught an expensive lesson after they were caught flying over the 110km/h speed limit on Sunday morning.
The learner was clocked at 143km/h while driving along Indian Ocean Avenue near the Nilgen Lookout in Lancelin.
The offence cost the learner and their instructing parent an $800 fine and six demerits.
According to the Department of Transport, a learner driver is only able to have three demerit points recorded against them until they are disqualified from driving - which means this driver is in for a long few months of walking.
According to WA law, the learner driver would have gotten away by the skin of their teeth; a learner must not exceed 100km p/hr, and this would mean they were travelling 43km over the limit.
In WA a driver must exceed the speed limit by 45km/h to be charged with reckless driving.
It was just last week that police charged a 31-year-old Malaysian man with four counts of careless driving occasioning grievous bodily harm over a serious crash near Lancelin on Easter Sunday. The crash landed himself and six other people in hospital.
One man was left fighting for his life.
The driver was also charged with two counts of careless driving occasioning bodily harm.
The accused man was allegedly driving a Toyota Corolla when it collided with a Mazda hatchback, causing it to roll several times.
