A young driver has allegedly been snapped by a speed camera doing 143km/h in a 60km/h zone in Toowoomba, with police lying in wait in the area following complaints from locals about hooning.
Police said a Toyota Supra was caught doing more than double the speed limit about 9.20pm on Friday on Tourist Road in Rangeville.
Police manning the speed camera alerted other officers who paid a visit to a 20-year-old local man the following morning and he was expected to appear in court in May in relation to alleged dangerous driving.
The Toyota was seized by police and the man issued a fine of more than $1000. It is understood his licence will be suspended once he pays the fine or appears in court.
"It's disappointing to see, given the amount of public road safety messages we've put out recently over the school holiday and Easter period," Sergeant Brendan Harding from the Toowoomba Road Policing Unit said.
Police said the Picnic Point and Rangeville areas were popular hooning spots.
