There are no births and deaths for today.
Magazine man was a staunch nationalist
In the 1960s and 70s, magazines such as Maclean's, Chatelaine, Flare, L'actualite and Canadian Art helped forge a national identity at a pivotal time in this country's history.
Anthony Westell
Often a daughter-in-law is the most perceptive about the family she married into. Thus, Kimberley Noble said it most neatly when she called Tony Westell, who died on April 1, ''a very dignified, stoic, British gentleman.'' He never lost those qualities after leaving Britain for Canada with Jeannie 60 years ago.
Anthony Westell
Tony Westell was my thesis adviser at the Carleton School of Journalism (1976). He challenged me to tackle a big subject: The Governability of Democracy, and pushed me to work hard. The final conclusion was that democracy thrives only when there is economic growth and general prosperity for most people. I thought of him often in the intervening years and appreciate his lessons.
