Balkh (Persian / Pashto: بلخ) is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, located in the north of the country. It is divided into about twelve districts and has a population of about 1,245,100, which is multi-ethnic and mostly a Persian-speaking society. The city of Mazar-i-Sharif serves as the capital of the province. The Mazar-e Sharif International Airport and Camp Marmal sit on the eastern edge of Mazar-i-Sharif.
The name of the province is derived from the ancient city of Balkh, near the modern town. Home to the famous blue mosque, it was once destroyed by Genghis Khan but later rebuilt by Timur. The city of Mazar-e-Sharif has been an important stop on the trade routes from the Far East to the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Europe.
The city of Balkh and the area of Balkh Province was considered a part of various historical regions in history including Ariana and Greater Khorasan.
It serves today as Afghanistan's second but main gateway to Central Asia, the other being Shir Khan Bandar in neighboring Kunduz Province.
Balkh (/bɑːlx/; Persian/Pashto: بلخ Balkh; Bactrian: βαχλο, ẞaxlɔ) was an ancient city and centre of Buddhism, Sufism and Zoroastrianism in what is now northern Afghanistan. Today it is a small town in the province of Balkh, about 20 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital, Mazar-e Sharif, and some 74 km (46 mi) south of the Amu Darya. It was one of the major cities of Khorasan, since the latter's earliest history. Marco Polo described Balkh as a "noble and great city".
The ancient city of Balkh was known to the Ancient Greeks as Bactra, giving its name to Bactria. It was mostly known as the centre and capital of Bactria or Tokharistan. Balkh is now for the most part a mass of ruins, situated some 12 km from the right bank of the seasonally flowing Balkh River, at an elevation of about 365 m (1,200 ft).
Outside the town was a large Buddhist monastery later known as Naubahar (or Nava Vihāra in Sanskrit).
French Buddhist Alexandra David-Néel associated Shambhala with Balkh, also offering the Persian Sham-i-Bala, "elevated candle" as an etymology of its name. In a similar vein, the Gurdjieffian J. G. Bennett published speculation that Shambalha was Shams-i-Balkh, a Bactrian sun temple.
On the Road is a novel by American writer Jack Kerouac, based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends across America. It is considered a defining work of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations, with its protagonists living life against a backdrop of jazz, poetry, and drug use. The novel, published in 1957, is a roman à clef, with many key figures in the Beat movement, such as William S. Burroughs (Old Bull Lee), Allen Ginsberg (Carlo Marx) and Neal Cassady (Dean Moriarty) represented by characters in the book, including Kerouac himself as the narrator Sal Paradise.
The idea for On the Road, Kerouac's second novel, was formed during the late 1940s in a series of notebooks, and then typed out on a continuous reel of paper during three weeks in April 1951. It was first published by Viking Press in 1957. After several film proposals dating from 1957, the book was finally made into a film, On the Road (2012), produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Walter Salles.

It's my first time going to Vietnam for work and health checking. We got there the first night on Sunday, left the luggage at the hotel and walking around Ho Chi Minh city for dinner. We keep walking to Pub Street to the lifestyle there. People keep coming and going and the music is playing so loud. There are people selling snack foods at night, a kid is blowing the fire, people walking back and forth. We had some snack and a beer and stayed until 1pm. It was a great night out in Ho Chi Minh City. Zhang Qian ( ? - 114 BC) was an outstanding imperial envoy and explorer in Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD). He opened up the world-famous Silk Road and brought reliable information about the Western Regions. During the reign of the Emperor Wu (Liu Che) (156 BC – 87 BC) of the Western Han Dynasty, the Xiongnu often intruded into the northern borders of the Han Empire, so the emperor was making preparations to fight against the Xiongnu. When he knew Da Rouzhi (an ancient state in Amu Darya) had a feud with the Xiongnu, because its king was killed by the Xiongnu' Chanyu (the headman of Xiongnu‘s tribes) and the head made into a goblet, he decided to unite with this state to combat their common enemy. Therefore, Zhang Qian was sent as a diplomatic envoy to the Western Regions. In 138 BC...
