The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to the exploration of space, with 22 member states. Established in 1975 and headquartered in Paris, France, ESA has a staff of more than 2,000 with an annual budget of about €4.28 billion / US$5.51 billion (2013).
ESA's space flight programme includes human spaceflight, mainly through the participation in the International Space Station programme, the launch and operations of unmanned exploration missions to other planets and the Moon, Earth observation, science, telecommunication as well as maintaining a major spaceport, the Guiana Space Centre at Kourou, French Guiana, and designing launch vehicles. The main European launch vehicle Ariane 5 is operated through Arianespace with ESA sharing in the costs of launching and further developing this launch vehicle.
Its facilities are distributed among the following 5 research centres:
Javid David Álvarez Fernández (born December 13, 1983 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) known artistically as J Alvarez is a Puerto Rican reggaetón singer.
Fernandez was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico on December 13, 1983. Both of his parents are from the Dominican Republic. When Alvarez was 12 years old he sang in front of several of his classmates and teachers, his first ever song "Lo Que Ella Trae" (What She Brings). He listened to many artists from the reggaeton genre, and paid much respect to artist Tego Calderon. Then, through his cousin, he met with DJ Nelson, and a working chemistry soon emerged between the two. He was then signed to Flow Music in 2009. Later that year, his debut album El Dueño Del Sistema was released. A special edition was later released on January 7, 2010. Otro Nivel De Musica, his second studio album was released on September 20, 2011 and featured the hit single "La Pregunta". A special edition was later released on May 1, 2012, titled Otro Nivel De Musica Reloaded. This album was very well received among fans and was nominated for Best Urban Music Album at the 2012 Latin Grammy Awards.
The Farmington River is a river, 46.7 miles (75.2 km) in length along its main stem, which is located in northwest Connecticut with major tributaries extending into southwest Massachusetts. Via its longest branch (the West Branch), the Farmington's length increases to 80.4 miles (129.4 km), making it the Connecticut River's longest tributary by a mere 2.3 miles (3.7 km) over the major river directly to its north, the Westfield River. The Farmington River's watershed covers 609 square miles (1,580 km2). The river historically played an important role in small-scale manufacturing in towns alongside it, but it is now mainly used for recreation and drinking water. The Farmington River Watershed Association is a non-profit organization for conservation and preservation of this river.
Headwaters for both main branches of the Farmington River, referred to as the East Branch and West Branch, are found in southwestern Massachusetts, though only the West Branch officially begins north of the Connecticut border. The West Branch rises at the outlet of Hayden Pond in Otis, Massachusetts. In 1994, a 14-mile (23 km) stretch of the branch was designated a National Wild and Scenic River. The East Branch begins in Hartland, Connecticut at the confluence of Pond, Hubbard and Valley Brooks. However, this branch has been impounded along the first 11 miles of its course to form the Barkhamsted Reservoir and Lake McDonough; it does not assume a particularly river-like appearance until it exits Lake McDonough in New Hartford, Connecticut. The East Branch and West Branch join in New Hartford, Connecticut just about one mile south of Lake McDonough. Upper reaches of the river flow mostly southward, but the river turns northward in Farmington, Connecticut and then runs mostly north and east until it flows into the Connecticut River near the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut.
Spiegel im Spiegel is a piece of music written by Arvo Pärt in 1978, just prior to his departure from Estonia. The piece is in the tintinnabular style of composition, wherein a melodic voice, operating over diatonic scales, and tintinnabular voice, operating within a triad on the tonic, accompany each other. It is about ten minutes long.
The piece was originally written for a single piano and violin – though the violin has often been replaced with either a cello or a viola. Versions also exist for double bass, clarinet, horn, flugelhorn, flute, bassoon, trombone, and percussion. The piece is an example of minimal music.
The piece is in F major in 6/4 time, with the piano playing rising crotchet triads and the second instrument playing slow F major scales, alternately rising and falling, of increasing length, which all end on the note A (the mediant of F). The piano's left hand also plays notes, syncopated with the violin (or other instrument).
"Spiegel im Spiegel" in German literally can mean both "mirror in the mirror" as well as "mirrors in the mirror", referring to an infinity mirror, which produces an infinity of images reflected by parallel plane mirrors: the tonic triads are endlessly repeated with small variations as if reflected back and forth. The structure of melody is made by couple of phrases characterized by the alternation between ascending and descending movement with the fulcrum on the note A. This, with also the overturning of the final intervals between adjacent phrases (for example, ascending sixth in the question - descending sixth in the answer), contribute to give the impression of a figure reflecting on a mirror and walking back and towards it.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

Foam on the Farmington River, Collinsville Ct. The song is Hymn III from The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars. This is the first video I've done with Premier Pro. I had been editing with Final Cut Express, and I was going to upgrade when Apple released their new program this summer. To say I was dismayed with the new product would be an understatement. I refused to be talked down to, and I purchased Premier Pro. The video details are that this was shot with a Panasonic TM700 in 1080p mode. The files were imported into Premier Pro and the clip was slowed to 25%. This is a 75% reduction in speed. The color was shifted and it changes over the duration of the clip. This is the result, and I have to say I'm delighted with it. Sure, there are things I'd change, but overall I'm impr...
An imaginary (and one sided) late night conversation with David Lynch about the nature of time. The soundtrack is two short recordings made with a homemade piezo disc contact mic. I worked the recordings to vary the tempo and the tone. The recordings are a pocket watch and the sound of the water dripping in the sink. This is all "found" sound. From Wikipedia, "A contact microphone, otherwise known as a pickup or a piezo, is a form of microphone designed to sense audio vibrations through solid objects. Unlike normal air microphones, contact mics are almost insensible to air vibrations but transduce only structure-borne sound". The water trickling at the end of the video is the only thing recorded with a normal mic. I have just started my exploration of sound and...
A short video of our last snowstorm. February 29, 2012 The song is " The Three Ravens" an old English folk ballad, published in 1611. I shot this through the car windshield, using a suction mounting device to hold the camera. I wanted to keep the camera out of the weather, and I like the visual effect of rain on the window. I had to leave the car running to keep the window from fogging up. I thought it wold be a good test, seeing how much vibration the camera picked up. I was shocked by the movement. The car acted like the rhythm section of a band, and the video had a constant and rhythmic vibration that would almost make you dizzy. So it brought up another test, I discovered that After Effects has a effect called the Warp Stabilizer. It took a couple of days, but I figu...
I walked to the river this evening, planning to make short time lapse of the sunset. But once again, as it has for as long as I have taken the time to watch, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the Farmington River . This section of the river is in the planning stage of being "improved" by the town. The islands in the foreground will be removed by dredging, and access is suppose to be provided for canoes, kayaks and other small boats. Progress, I'm told. A lot of people stopped to talk as the camera recorded this, and no matter what each short conversation was about, every single person remarked on how beautiful and peaceful the scene was. It occurred to me that any editing I did after I recorded this would be nothing more than a visual attempt to improve the river. So, becau...
The North East U.S. suffered a rare and devastating snowstorm on October 29, 2011. The heavy snow and high winds brought down trees and power lines over most of the state of Connecticut. At the height of the storm about 800,000 customers were without power. The states of New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts suffered about the same amount of damage. This is my record of Storm Alfred and the massive clean up and restoration in the towns of Collinsville and West Hartford Ct. The music is Veni et Vidi ; Lacrimosa - Day of Tears; and Prayer; by Zbigniew Preisner .
Spiegel im Spiegel, the mirror in the mirror. An interesting concept. The reflections in a mirror are reversed. In the second mirror, the reversal is corrected. The images can be distorted, contracted, expanded, or elongated. Almost any visual effect you can imagine can be produced by a mirror. But in spite of all these effects the truth remains that the mirror can only reflect the image of the viewer, and his environment. The principle is called the Angle Of Incidence. When you view a reflection in a mirror, your reflection is also visible. Somewhere in a reflection…. is you. It's impossible to avoid. And I would like to point out, that almost every surface in the world can at times act like a mirror. So I thought it would be interesting to show a reflection, and to have the vi...
The Professor and I made a quick journey into New York City this weekend. I really needed to see something (anything) new, and he was kind enough to to go along and keep me out of trouble. Saw a lot of galleries, ate ALL the wrong foods and did a rock concert. ...Basically, we behaved badly. Anyway, I was able to shoot a lot of video and this is just an impression of some of the City. The soundtrack is Leonard Cohen reciting a line from the Simon and Garfunkel song " Sounds of Silence". Not sure why I chose this one, except this is the tune that runs in my mind as soon as I step into a subway.
Wyoming. Vast, beautiful and enigmatic. I wanted to understand the the whole state, not just the places most visitors get to. This trip took me on the backroads and mostly undiscovered corners of the state. The problem would be how to make a video that captured my impressions of the place. The usual road trip video would be cliché . I needed to come up with something that showed the wide open spaces, the quiet, and the beauty of Wyoming, but also showed the human element. The location is Rt. 116, in the Northeast part of the state. Thunder Basin National Grassland. The music is "Rytm To Niesmiertelnosc" by Jacaszek.
The Eastern part of the U.S. received a record amount of rain this year, more than 1 1/2 times our average rainfall amount. As a result we had almost constant flooding. At times it was catastrophic. I photographed one of the storms in August, and decided to use the footage experimenting with color effects and time remapping in Premier Pro. An abstract impressionistic rain storm. The song is Escape Velocity, by The Chemical Brothers

This virtual journey shows the different components that make up our home galaxy, the Milky Way, which contains about a hundred billion stars. It starts at the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way and with the stars that orbit around it, before zooming out through the central Galactic Bulge, which hosts about ten billion stars. The journey continues through a younger population of stars in the stellar disc, home to most of the Milky Way's stars, and which is embedded in a slightly larger gaseous disc. Stars in the disc are arranged in a spiral arm pattern and orbit the centre of the Galaxy. The discs and bulge are embedded in the stellar halo, a spherical structure that consists of a large number of globular clusters -- the oldest population of stars in the Galaxy -- as well as man...

This video is part of a series of educational videos that ESA is releasing based on the five visionaries that lent their name to Europe’s space freighters. Jules Verne, Johannes Kepler, Edoardo Amaldi, Albert Einstein and Georges Lemaître form the inspiration to explain the principles of physics to young and older audiences. Presented by Anu Ojha, this video offers a good basis to introduce schoolchildren and the general public to concepts of special and general relativities and their implication in space flight. Accompanying these videos are also a new set of resources that ESA education is producing: Teach with Space, a large set of demonstrations and teacher guides intended to bring the excitement of space into the classroom to inspire the next generation. This is the Interact Centaur rover that ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen will be operating from orbit aboard the International Space Station, to drive into position and then perform an operation requiring sub-millimetre precision. Developed by ESA’s Telerobotics and Haptics Laboratory, the Interact Centaur is a 4x4 wheeled rover combining a camera head on a neck system, a pair of highly advanced force sensitive robotic arms designed for remote force-feedback-based operation and a number of proximity and localisation sensors. As demonstrated here, Andreas will first attempt to guide the robot to locate an ‘operations task board’ and then to remove and plug a metal pin into it, which has a very tight mechanical fit and tolerance of only about 150 micrometres, less than a sixth of a millimetr...
