Stopping Abusive Content on YouTube: Implementing Word Filtering and IP and Common Proxy Blocking

Taxonomy Categories: Cyberhate, Google, Youtube,

YouTube (YT) presently responds to complaints of abusive, racist, and homophobic content by blocking usernames and/or taking down offending channels. However, this is not sufficient since offenders can simply clone new channels and/or create new user names within minutes of being suspended.

Please help us by demanding that YT implement: (1) word filtering, (2) IP blocking and, (3) blocking commonly used proxies and anonymous internet services.

This would help stop a lot of offensive content and harassment on YT - a company presently owned and operated by Google.

Word Filtering

Word filtering would help stop offensive content and harassment by blocking words like "nigger”, “faggot”, “jewwatch” and “1488,88” in the creation of channels and user names on YT.

User Names

A simple word filter would also prevent the use of user names like niggerstink0fshit18 and JewwatchFrance and JEWWATCH7 and HAHAimbackjews1488, 14USA88, MrNiggerHunter1488x.

Word filtering would also prevent suspended users from using the same username again in series of derivatives like niggerstink0fshit18, niggerstink0fshit19 or JewatchFrance, GastheKikes, GasTheKikesScum, GasTheKikes1.

It is obvious that a person who creates a username like "niggerstink0fshit18" does so to gain attention and to advertise offensive content. Why not put a stop to this by simply filtering racist, homophobic and other offensive terms, and previously suspended user names.

Obviously, this would not solve all the problems of offensive content, but it would help and is a relatively simple technological fix for a serious problem.

IP and Common Proxy Blocking

YT reacts to complaints about offensive content by suspending the offending username. YT's Terms of Service clearly states that: "A user whose account has been terminated is prohibited from accessing, possessing or creating any other YouTube accounts". But offenders know that they can re-create or clone their channels within a few minutes because YT does not block the IP address where the offensive content originates.

Blocking IP addresses, common proxies and anonymous internet services like Tor would prevent abusive users from bypassing YT Terms of Service restrictions by preventing the use of multiple usernames and/or accounts.

For example, serial abusers like (i.e., JewWatchEngland, JewWatchArmenia, NiggerForTheNiggers, oNiggerWhereArtThou, NIGGERSTINK0FSHIT26 ) are still active on YT because of the lack of a protocol to block offending IP addresses and anonymous internet services and proxies.

In fact, effective IP, proxy and anonymous service (i.e., Tor) blocking has been successfully implemented by Wikipedia and can be done by YT.

Conclusion

To help stop hate, racism and other abusive words and content, YT should simply filter offensive words like "nigger”, “faggot”, “jewwatch” or “1488” or “88”. This would prevent these kinds of words from being used as usernames and/or account names on YT.

Blocking an offending user's IP address, proxy or anonymous service, is a second technological solution to help prevent abusive and hate, homophobic and racist content. IP blocking and anonymous service blocking would prevent users from creating multiple usernames and multiple channels for offensive content.

YT can easily implement these two simple technological fixes. Please help us persuade YT to implement these standard blocking and filtering practices by emailing YT at the following email addresses. Please add your concerns and reference this article.
