Remains found in submerged car

Skeletal remains found in a submerged car in a Sunshine Coast dam are believed to belong to Tasmanian man Stuart Gatehouse, who went missing 13 years ago. 7 News Sunshine Coast

A member of the public using a depth sounder noticed the car in Borumba Dam, about 50 kilometres west of Noosa and alerted police.

Divers combed the site on Thursday, finding the submerged red 1986 Holden Commodore he was last seen in.

When they dragged the vehicle from the dam, police discovered "skeletal remains" inside and called in the State Homicide Squad to help Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch detectives.

Mr Gatehouse disappeared about April 2004 and was last seen in Kenilworth, about 15 kilometres south-west of the dam.

According to the national missing persons register, he left Kenilworth for Gympie but never arrived.
