Mt. Evans is one of my favorite destinations in the summer when I'm looking for an easy trip to photograph wildlife. On any given day it''s common to see mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, marmots, pikas, foxes, coyotes, ermine and many other animals that make their home on the high alpine tundra. The road to the top of Mount Evans is the highest paved road in all of North America, passing three different life zones on the way. The road gives many a chance to see what it looks like from the top of one of Colorado's highest peaks, who wouldn't otherwise get to. Prepare for any type of weather on this road in the summer, including snow. I don't find the road to be dangerous at all, but I have taken a few people up who were very disoriented by the altitude and drop offs on the side of the road. I typically do this drive at sunrise, when the light is best for photography. This time of the day you usually have the mountain to yourself, but during the day it gets more crowded and you will most likely find yourself behind someone who is going way too slow for your taste. I timed this drive out so that I would make it to the top just as the full moon was setting to the west at the same time as the sun was rising to the east. Once you make it to the top of the road its a short 100-something foot hike to the official summit.
As a side note... Access to Mt. Evans is currently under the jurisdiction of three different governmental units. CDOT, Denver Mountain Parks and the US Forest Service. There is a 10 dollar fee to use the road, but what they don't tell you, is that if you just plan to drive up and down the mountain there is no fee. Paying at all to use public land is a controversial issue on Mt. Evans, and as far as I'm concerned, up for interpretation when it comes to paying the fee.

If there’s one climb that stands above all in Colorado it’s Mount Evans. Not only is it the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks, in the Front Range of the Rockies, but to top it off it’s the highest paved road in north America at a whopping 14,130ft (4,307m) elevation! To put that in perspective by the summit you’re just 1,640ft (500m) shy of being at the top of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, but to make it that high in Europe you’ll definitely need to trade your wheels for a pair of ice axes.....not so in the U.S! In cycling terms, it’s like taking the Galibier and sticking Alpe d’Huez on top, starting at an already oxygen deprived 7,526ft (2,294m) elevation and riding all the way until the air is so thin you swear you’re about to enter a vacuum.
Starting in the historic mining town of Idaho Springs you face a daunting 27.9 mile ascent, journeying through three life zones passing forests, lakes and ancient trees toward the unknown. Although the gradient is never too steep, averaging 4.6% and topping out at 10% it’s the combination of the altitude and elements working together that make this one of the hardest climbs there is. Period.
As you emerge from the Arapaho National Forest conditions can change quickly. In a moment the temperature dropped from 71°F (21°C) to just 39°F (4°C) and with the wind chill it felt bitter to the point my face was verging on freezing.
With 60% less oxygen than at sea level, and a ripping headwind, the final miles often result in nothing more than sheer bloody mindedness and a will to survive. Well, at least that’s what it felt like to me. We’d actually planned to ride Mount Evans later in our trip to give some time to acclimatise to the altitude but our original date happened to fall the wrong side of Labor Day (which is normally when the road is then closed after Summit Lake approximately 5 miles from the top). Not wanting to risk it we had to tackle this on day one, straight off the back of a long haul flight coming from sea level. I’d like to think that’s why I found it so hard but the reality is, even on the finest of days and with the best prep Mount Evans is, and always will be, an utter brute. And you know what? We wouldn’t want it any other way.

Mount Evans is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak - another Front Range fourteener - which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m).
The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline and can be seen as far south as Monument Hill at the Douglas-El Paso county line (79 miles (127 km) south) and as far north as Boulder (44 miles (71 km) north), and points east of Strasburg (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs.

You can reach it by hiking seven strenuous miles (one way) up a glacier-carved valley.
The area's 14,000 foot peaks and proximity to Denver combine with the summit road to draw large numbers of visitors. Nevertheless, the Mount Evans Wilderness contains notable biological features, harboring not only alpine tundra, but arctic tundra as well. This is one of the few places south of the Arctic Circle, where such tundra is found. It differs from alpine tundra by virtue of its moisture, as it contains countless small pools of water. In contrast, most tundra in Colorado is dry and brittle once uncovered by snow. The Mount Goliath Natural area contains another of the region's unusual features - a prime stand of bristlecone pine. These gnarled elders of the forest often live 1,500 to 2,000 years, growing at infinitesimal rates. The trees' twisted and contorted trunks offer stark evidence of their bitter fight for survival against the elements.
Two species of animals less frequently observed elsewhere have become popular attractions here. Evans, Colorado
The City of Evans is a Home Rule Municipality located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,514 at the 2000 census, and estimated at 18,842 as of July 1, 2008, by the Census Bureau.
History
Named for the second Territorial Governor of Colorado, John Evans, the town was established in 1867 and was Weld County's seat of government twice before Greeley finally captured the honor. Legend in Evans is that the county records were stolen by night-riders from Greeley, who also burned the courthouse down with the county seat documents. The town was incorporated in 1885.
Today, Evans, like other towns in Colorado along the South Platte River, is home to a rapidly growing Hispanic population. Evans has several primary commercial areas located along US 85 just south of its junction with US 34, as well along 23rd Avenue and on 37th Street with new commercial areas developing as the city expands to the west and south of the South Platte River.

Pikes Peak
Pikes Peak is the highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The ultra-prominent 14,115-foot (4,302.31 m) fourteener is located in Pike National Forest, 12.0 miles (19.3 km) west by south (bearing 263°) of downtown Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The mountain is named in honor of American explorer Zebulon Pike who was unable to reach the summit. The summit is higher than any point in the United States east of its longitude.

Pikes Peak is one of Colorado's 53 fourteeners, mountains that rise more than 14,000 feet (4,267.2 m) above sea level. The mountain rises 8,000 ft (2,400 m) above downtown Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak is a designated National Historic Landmark.
"Tava" or “sun,” is the Ute word that was given by these first people to the mountain that we now call Pikes Peak. The band of Ute people who called the Pikes Peak region their home were the "Tabeguache," meaning the "People of Sun Mountain." The Ute people first arrived in Colorado about 500 A.D., although their traditions say they were created on Pikes Peak. In the 1800s, when the Arapaho people arrived in Colorado, they knew the mountain as "Heey-otoyoo’ " meaning "Long Mountain". Early Spanish explorers named the mountain "El Capitán" meaning "The Leader". American explorer Zebulon Pike named the mountain "Highest Peak" in 1806, and the mountain was later commonly known as "Pike's Highest Peak". American explorer Stephen Harriman Long named the mountain "James Peak" in honor of Edwin James who climbed to the summit in 1820. The mountain was later renamed "Pike's Peak" in honor of Pike. The name was simplified to "Pikes Peak" by the United States Board on Geographic Names in 1890.

http://www.jrossvideo.com The highest auto road in the USA - Mount Evans Colorado. It is prettier than Pikes Peak and NO DUST to spoil the tundra. However, most people will find it scarier to drive. Mount Evans is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak - another Front Range fourteener - which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m). The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline and can be seen as far south as Monument Hill at the Douglas-El Paso county line (79 miles (127 km) south) and as far north as Boulder (44 miles (71 km) north), and points east of Strasburg (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs. Neighboring towns: Georgetown, Silver Plume, Idaho Springs, Golden, Brookvale, Highland Park, Evergreen, Conifer One of the three fourteeners visible from Denver, Mount Evans dominates the mountainous horizon west of the city. Its great sculpted eastern face greets the dawn each day, capturing the morning light. On any given day it''s common to see mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, marmots, pikas, foxes, coyotes, ermine and many other animals that make their home on the high alpine tundra. The road to the top of Mount Evans is the highest paved road in all of North America, passing three different life zones on the way. The road gives many a chance to see what it looks like from the top of one of Colorado's highest peaks, who wouldn't otherwise get to. Prepare for any type of weather on this road in the summer, including snow. If there’s one climb that stands above all in Colorado it’s Mount Evans. Not only is it the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks, in the Front Range of the Rockies, but to top it off it’s the highest paved road in north America at a whopping 14,130ft (4,307m) elevation! To put that in perspective by the summit you’re just 1,640ft (500m) shy of being at the top of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, but to make it that high in Europe you’ll definitely need to trade your wheels for a pair of ice axes.....not so in the U.S! In cycling terms, it’s like taking the Galibier and sticking Alpe d’Huez on top, starting at an already oxygen deprived 7,526ft (2,294m) elevation and riding all the way until the air is so thin you swear you’re about to enter a vacuum. On any given day it''s common to see mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, marmots, pikas, foxes, coyotes, ermine and many other animals that make their home on the high alpine tundra. The road to the top of Mount Evans is the highest paved road in all of North America, passing three different life zones on the way. The road gives many a chance to see what it looks like from the top of one of Colorado's highest peaks, who wouldn't otherwise get to. Prepare for any type of weather on this road in the summer, including snow. I don't find the road to be dangerous at all, but I have taken a few people up who were very disoriented by the altitude and drop offs on the side of the road. I typically do this drive at sunrise, when the light is best for photography. This time of the day you usually have the mountain to yourself, but during the day it gets more crowded and you will most likely find yourself behind someone who is going way too slow for your taste. I timed this drive out so that I would make it to the top just as the full moon was setting to the west at the same time as the sun was rising to the east. Once you make it to the top of the road its a short 100-something foot hike to the official summit.
As a side note... Access to Mt. Evans is currently under the jurisdiction of three different governmental units. CDOT, Denver Mountain Parks and the US Forest Service. There is a 10 dollar fee to use the road, but what they don't tell you, is that if you just plan to drive up and down the mountain there is no fee. Paying at all to use public land is a controversial issue on Mt. Evans, and as far as I'm concerned, up for interpretation when it comes to paying the fee.

If there’s one climb that stands above all in Colorado it’s Mount Evans. Not only is it the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks, in the Front Range of the Rockies, but to top it off it’s the highest paved road in north America at a whopping 14,130ft (4,307m) elevation! To put that in perspective by the summit you’re just 1,640ft (500m) shy of being at the top of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, but to make it that high in Europe you’ll definitely need to trade your wheels for a pair of ice axes.....not so in the U.S! In cycling terms, it’s like taking the Galibier and sticking Alpe d’Huez on top, starting at an already oxygen deprived 7,526ft (2,294m) elevation and riding all the way until the air is so thin you swear you’re about to enter a vacuum.
Starting in the historic mining town of Idaho Springs you face a daunting 27.9 mile ascent, journeying through three life zones passing forests, lakes and ancient trees toward the unknown. Although the gradient is never too steep, averaging 4.6% and topping out at 10% it’s the combination of the altitude and elements working together that make this one of the hardest climbs there is. Period.
As you emerge from the Arapaho National Forest conditions can change quickly. In a moment the temperature dropped from 71°F (21°C) to just 39°F (4°C) and with the wind chill it felt bitter to the point my face was verging on freezing.
With 60% less oxygen than at sea level, and a ripping headwind, the final miles often result in nothing more than sheer bloody mindedness and a will to survive. Well, at least that’s what it felt like to me. We’d actually planned to ride Mount Evans later in our trip to give some time to acclimatise to the altitude but our original date happened to fall the wrong side of Labor Day (which is normally when the road is then closed after Summit Lake approximately 5 miles from the top). Not wanting to risk it we had to tackle this on day one, straight off the back of a long haul flight coming from sea level. I’d like to think that’s why I found it so hard but the reality is, even on the finest of days and with the best prep Mount Evans is, and always will be, an utter brute. And you know what? We wouldn’t want it any other way.

Mount Evans is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak - another Front Range fourteener - which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m).
The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline and can be seen as far south as Monument Hill at the Douglas-El Paso county line (79 miles (127 km) south) and as far north as Boulder (44 miles (71 km) north), and points east of Strasburg (105 miles (169 km) east). Mount Evans is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak - another Front Range fourteener - which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m).
The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline and can be seen as far south as Monument Hill at the Douglas-El Paso county line (79 miles (127 km) south) and as far north as Boulder (44 miles (71 km) north), and points east of Strasburg (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs.

In contrast, most tundra in Colorado is dry and brittle once uncovered by snow. The Mount Goliath Natural area contains another of the region's unusual features - a prime stand of bristlecone pine. These gnarled elders of the forest often live 1,500 to 2,000 years, growing at infinitesimal rates. The trees' twisted and contorted trunks offer stark evidence of their bitter fight for survival against the elements.
Two species of animals less frequently observed elsewhere have become popular attractions here. A herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live around Mount Evans, and mountain goats are frequently seen from the summit road. The vast expanses of tundra offer visitors numerous opportunities to spy more common critters, including ptarmigan and yellow-bellied marmots.

One of the three fourteeners visible from Denver, Mount Evans dominates the mountainous horizon west of the city. Its great sculpted eastern face greets the dawn each day, capturing the morning light. Much of the wilderness lies above timberline, and place names such as Sawtooth, Frozen Lake, and Abyss Lake offer a hint of the rugged glacial terrain that characterizes the area.
Crawling up into the wilderness, but outside the circuitous boundary, a paved road runs to the top of Mount Evans, the highest paved road in America. Abyss Lake, surrounded by fabulous scenery, rests in a rock-rimmed gorge at 12,550 feet in the heart of the wilderness. You can reach it by hiking seven strenuous miles (one way) up a glacier-carved valley.
The area's 14,000 foot peaks and proximity to Denver combine with the summit road to draw large numbers of visitors. Nevertheless, the Mount Evans Wilderness contains notable biological features, harboring not only alpine tundra, but arctic tundra as well. This is one of the few places south of the Arctic Circle, where such tundra is found. It differs from alpine tundra by virtue of its moisture, as it contains countless small pools of water. In contrast, most tundra in Colorado is dry and brittle once uncovered by snow. The Mount Goliath Natural area contains another of the region's unusual features - a prime stand of bristlecone pine. These gnarled elders of the forest often live 1,500 to 2,000 years, growing at infinitesimal rates. The trees' twisted and contorted trunks offer stark evidence of their bitter fight for survival against the elements.
Two species of animals less frequently observed elsewhere have become popular attractions here. A herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live around Mount Evans, and mountain goats are frequently seen from the summit road. The vast expanses of tundra offer visitors numerous opportunities to spy more common critters, including ptarmigan and yellow-bellied marmots.

If there’s one climb that stands above all in Colorado it’s Mount Evans. Not only is it the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks, in the Front Range of the Rockies, but to top it off it’s the highest paved road in north America at a whopping 14,130ft (4,307m) elevation! To put that in perspective by the summit you’re just 1,640ft (500m) shy of being at the top of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, but to make it that high in Europe you’ll definitely need to trade your wheels for a pair of ice axes.....not so in the U.S! On any given day it''s common to see mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, marmots, pikas, foxes, coyotes, ermine and many other animals that make their home on the high alpine tundra. The road to the top of Mount Evans is the highest paved road in all of North America, passing three different life zones on the way. The road gives many a chance to see what it looks like from the top of one of Colorado's highest peaks, who wouldn't otherwise get to. Prepare for any type of weather on this road in the summer, including snow. I don't find the road to be dangerous at all, but I have taken a few people up who were very disoriented by the altitude and drop offs on the side of the road. I typically do this drive at sunrise, when the light is best for photography. This time of the day you usually have the mountain to yourself, but during the day it gets more crowded and you will most likely find yourself behind someone who is going way too slow for your taste. I timed this drive out so that I would make it to the top just as the full moon was setting to the west at the same time as the sun was rising to the east. Once you make it to the top of the road its a short 100-something foot hike to the official summit.
As a side note... Access to Mt. Evans is currently under the jurisdiction of three different governmental units. CDOT, Denver Mountain Parks and the US Forest Service. There is a 10 dollar fee to use the road, but what they don't tell you, is that if you just plan to drive up and down the mountain there is no fee. Paying at all to use public land is a controversial issue on Mt. Evans, and as far as I'm concerned, up for interpretation when it comes to paying the fee.

Not only is it the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks, in the Front Range of the Rockies, but to top it off it’s the highest paved road in north America at a whopping 14,130ft (4,307m) elevation! To put that in perspective by the summit you’re just 1,640ft (500m) shy of being at the top of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, but to make it that high in Europe you’ll definitely need to trade your wheels for a pair of ice axes.....not so in the U.S! In cycling terms, it’s like taking the Galibier and sticking Alpe d’Huez on top, starting at an already oxygen deprived 7,526ft (2,294m) elevation and riding all the way until the air is so thin you swear you’re about to enter a vacuum.
Starting in the historic mining town of Idaho Springs you face a daunting 27.9 mile ascent, journeying through three life zones passing forests, lakes and ancient trees toward the unknown. Although the gradient is never too steep, averaging 4.6% and topping out at 10% it’s the combination of the altitude and elements working together that make this one of the hardest climbs there is. Period.
As you emerge from the Arapaho National Forest conditions can change quickly. In a moment the temperature dropped from 71°F (21°C) to just 39°F (4°C) and with the wind chill it felt bitter to the point my face was verging on freezing.
With 60% less oxygen than at sea level, and a ripping headwind, the final miles often result in nothing more than sheer bloody mindedness and a will to survive. Well, at least that’s what it felt like to me. We’d actually planned to ride Mount Evans later in our trip to give some time to acclimatise to the altitude but our original date happened to fall the wrong side of Labor Day (which is normally when the road is then closed after Summit Lake approximately 5 miles from the top). Not wanting to risk it we had to tackle this on day one, straight off the back of a long haul flight coming from sea level. I’d like to think that’s why I found it so hard but the reality is, even on the finest of days and with the best prep Mount Evans is, and always will be, an utter brute. And you know what? We wouldn’t want it any other way.

Mount Evans is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak - another Front Range fourteener - which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m).
The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline and can be seen as far south as Monument Hill at the Douglas-El Paso county line (79 miles (127 km) south) and as far north as Boulder (44 miles (71 km) north), and points east of Strasburg (105 miles (169 km) east). Colorado Trip July 2017 Part 1: Mt. Evans Climb on a Bicycle in 4K
First and foremost please subscribe to my channel by clicking on the red "Subscribe" tab to the top right of my channels screen. Felt pretty good throughout the ride. Made an effort to try to pace myself at about 12mph/80rpm at the bottom but my cadence had to drop to 60ish @5-6mph when the climbs got steep. Last few miles were a grind. My legs felt really heavy and I could feel every single heartbeat at the base of my neck and back of my tongue even when I was well below my max HR. Helped to see my 3s and 30s watts so I could adjust my effort as a few times I was pushing a bit too hard (220-240w) and made the effort to ease up on my Watts. Storm clouds moved in fast as I reached the summit. My luck. Could clearly see rain in the distance. After the photo I fought through tourist traffic ...

The combination of both cameras captures the true beauty and sometimes terrifying drive up the summit.
This video was edited post recording and was captured in real time from the base/entry area until you reach the summit.

Felt pretty good throughout the ride. Made an effort to try to pace myself at about 12mph/80rpm at the bottom but my cadence had to drop to 60ish @5-6mph when the climbs got steep. Last few miles were a grind. My legs felt really heavy and I could feel every single heartbeat at the base of my neck and back of my tongue even when I was well below my max HR. Helped to see my 3s and 30s watts so I could adjust my effort as a few times I was pushing a bit too hard (220-240w) and made the effort to ease up on my Watts. Storm clouds moved in fast as I reached the summit. My luck. Could clearly see rain in the distance. After the photo I fought through tourist traffic and began the 28mile descent. The descent was treacherous above the tree line where road conditions were bad,,cracks, bumps, frost heaves and sink holes. Most dangerous experience I have had in a long long time. Not to mention gusty updrafts on the cliffs. Coming up on switchbacks at 30+ white knuckling my cork pads proved to be a pain in the neck. At Echo lake, the road was nice and smooth all the way down to Idaho Springs. The end of the ride was super fun fast twisty and barely had to pedal at all. Would I do it again? Yes of course. Maybe on my mtn bike though,,,more gears and full squish!
Left my helmet mount at the hotel so I had to resort to mouth mount which was not ideal.
