Yemen (i/ˈjɛmən/; Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom. Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests. Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

The United Arab Emirates has declared an end to its military operation in Yemen. Emirati Foreign Minister Anwar Qarqash has said the war for the UAE troops is practically over. The Arab country will likely keep part of its forces in war-torn Yemen. The UAE has been a key participant in the Saudi-led aggression on Yemen. More than 80 Emirati soldiers including four copter pilots have been killed since the war began March last year. The heaviest loss of lives took place in September when 45 UAE service members died in a missile attack by Yemen’s Houthi fighters. The partial withdrawal comes as Saudi Arabia and its allies have failed to reinstate the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi who was toppled by the Houthis. The Youth Economic Empowerment Project uses the 3x6 Approach to contribute to peace-building and the economic recovery process by mitigating rampant unemployment among youth in Yemen. The approach has three main phases—inclusiveness, ownership and sustainability. During phase I, the period of temporary employment, individuals are encouraged to develop a business idea that they will implement individually or in association with others in Phase II. In Phase II, once the business plan is found to be solid, the project will triple the savings of the individual or group to provide start-up capital for implementation of the business concept. Phase III is a period of consolidation of the business and the project ensures that the young entrepreneurs have access to information about the business en...
Abdullah Al-Dailami, Managing Director of Yemen's Social Fund for Development, says learning from best practices can enhance the sustainability of economic interventions by the government. These influences are seen primarily by their impact on small businesses, for instance avoiding subsidies and setting up loan programs that have a high likelihood for success. The government has also focused on preparing the business environment, by mobilizing different aspects of the economic sectors to then conduct direct interventions on their own.

Meet Ravid Kahalani, songwriter and lead singer of the popular Israeli band 'Yemen Blues.' Ravid grew up in Israel surrounded by Jewish-Yemeni culture and later discovered his love for African music and Balkan orthodox liturgy. His music merges all these sounds to create a completely unique style. It's only natural for him to sing in Yemeni-Arabic, and he dreams of performing in Yemen one day.

http://www.twitter.com/israel On 6 November 2014, over two thousand young people (and those who are simply young at heart) gathered near downtown Jerusalem to celebrate life. The "Simply Singing" initiative, which began at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, aims at bringing Jews and Arabs together through shared cultural events. Facilitators taught songs and invited participants to sing along in both Hebrew and Arabic. The event was headlined by singer Lubna Salame and the Yemen Blues band, who together created a special joint performance for the event. Yemen Blues is lead by singer Ravid Kahalani, who combines the ancient Jewish melodies of his birthplace in Yemen with West African, funk and mambo influences. Time Out Chicago wrote that Yemen Blues is "one of the most exciting bands i...
Yemeni People The culture of Yemen has an ancient history, influenced by Islam. Due to its unique geographic location, Yemen has acquired a very distinctive culture from its neighbors; historically and culturally, the people of Yemen have closer ties with the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Ethiopia) than they do with the rest of Arabia and the Middle East.Religion in Yemen primarily consists of two principal religious groups of Islam; Sunni and Shi'a. About 65% of the Muslim population is Sunni, and 30% is Shi'a. Sunnis are primarily Shafi'i, but also include significant groups of Malikis and Hanbalis. Shi'as are primarily Zaidis, though they also have significant minorities of Twelver Shi'as and Musta'ali Western Isma'ili Shi'as (see: Shi'a Islam in Yemen).[1] The Sunnis ...

Seven Yemeni women a day die of complications from pregnancy or childbirth -- leaving seven families in danger of collapse in the absence of a mother -- and nearly all of the deaths are preventable.

The Save the Children Fund delivered the warning on Tuesday in a report titled Struggling to Survive: Stories from Yemen’s Collapsing Health System, which is based on factual information and interviews with practitioners and locals. The report said at least 1,219 children had died as a direct result of warfare in the country, adding, however, that the “invisible causalities of Yemen’s war” are much higher. “An estimated 1,000 children are dying every week from preventable killers like diarrhea, malnutrition and respiratory tract infections,” Edward Santiago, the body’s Yemen country director, was cited in the report as saying. In August, Doctors Without Borders warned that the health system in the war-ridden nation was close to collapsing due to the Saudi military aggression

The Yemenis consider themselves the "original" Arabs from whom all the other Arabs are descended. Indeed according to ancient scriptures,Quran and some suggestive statements in the Talmud there is evidence of this. In ancient Yemen, named by the ancient Romans "Arabia Felix" ;Happy Arabia, there were 6 principal kingdoms: the Sabaean, Awsanian, Minaean, Qatabanian, Hadhramawtian, Himyarite. Sabaean was the oldest and one of the most powerful. Saba in Hebrew is "Sheba". Thus the fabled Queen of Sheba came from Sabaean kingdom. Queens in Arabia were common, and both the Bible and Quran refer to the Queen of Sheba whose real name was Bilquis! Sana'a, the capital, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Due to all the negative media coverage in the middle east, countries in the area are heavily affected by the dwindling number of tourists. I took this opportunity to visit Egypt, Jordan and Turkey for 2 months. This video is the first part of the video where I spent 10 days in Egypt traveling alone from Cairo, Aswan to Luxor. Even though, the number of tourists in Egypt has gone down considerably after the revolution, the country still hold one of the most historic sites and ruins of an Ancient civilization the ruled the area, the Ancient Egypt. After all, this is the only Egypt we have in the world, so don't let the media stop you from coming to this place. Enjoy the video! Arabia enamora.

President Donald Trump authorized a raid in Yemen over the weekend with the goal of targeting an al-Qaida stronghold. Details of the planning and execution have come under scrutiny; a Navy SEAL died, a transport aircraft had to be destroyed and civilians were likely killed. Hari Sreenivasan speaks with David Sanger of The New York Times and Richard Atwood, director of International Crisis Group.
Throughout in Yemen, Stone Age people left evidence of their occupation ...

Support CaspianReport through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CaspianReport In a previous CaspianReport, released back in 2011, we argued about the likelihood of a civil war in Yemen and that the Iranian back Houthi rebellion would trigger a new front in the ongoing Saudi-Iranian cold war. The other fronts being Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Now that Yemen is once again on the brink of civil war, and facing a Zaidi-Shia led uprising in the North and an al-Qaeda led uprising in the South, all the while being bombed by neighboring Arab states, let’s take a step back and look at the origins of the current crisis. For years I've been looking at the Island of Socotra off the coast of Yemen wondering about the possibility of bonefish. My mate Kamal and I traveled to Socotra in late March in search of this elusive flats-dwelling species. It took most of our ten days on the island to finally crack them, but we did it. The question remains, are we the first fishermen to catch bonefish on the fly in Yemen? I think so.
A film on oral tradition and the exchange of poetry in Yemen.
After days of trying to get these threadfin salmon to take a fly, my mate Kamal finally cracked them. We caught several salmon that morning along a beautiful stretch of beach on Socotra Island, Yemen.

The opening title sequence to the film starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. Lens flares and glittering bokeh create a dreamlike underwater sequence. Type refracts with the bubbles and currents before disappearing into the flow of indifferent salmon. Finally we drift upwards to the water's surface, out of the magical underworld and into reality.
