Training benchmark contributions for Subclass 457 Visa programs

Your business may contribute to Victoria University’s Scholarship Fund to meet the Training Benchmark A requirements for Subclass 457 visas.

Brief overview of the visa requirements

The Temporary Work (Skilled) (subclass 457) visa allows skilled workers to relocate in Australia and work for an approved business for up to four years.

To be approved as a sponsor for Subclass 457 visas, a business must meet one of 2 benchmarks in relation to training set by the Department of Immigration & Border Protection.

Refer to the Department of Immigration & Border Protection website for more information on subclass 457 visa training benchmarks.

Training Benchmark A - Industry Training Fund

In this case, your business needs to show recent expenditure (in the last 12 months) to the equivalent of at least 2% of the payroll of your business, in payments allocated to an industry training fund relevant to the business.

You may choose to consider a contribution through Training Benchmark A to Victoria University’s Scholarship Fund if your business meets the necessary requirements.

Our scholarship fund has been approved by the Department of Immigration & Border Protection as a recognised scholarship fund.

Training Benchmark A benefits companies:

  • seeking to employ a Non-Australian citizen
  • that are recently established businesses
  • fulfil obligations immediately.

From 1 July 2013 legislation amendments stipulate the training fund study area must correspond to the skill shortage that the business is seeking to fill. For example, if a law firm is sponsoring an IT specialist, the study area will need to be IT.

You can see if we conduct industry relevant courses through our course finder.

In this case, businesses must show recent expenditure (in the last 12 months) to the equivalent of at least 1% of the payroll of the business, in the provision of training to those employees of the business who are Australian citizens or permanent residents.

If Employee Training does not prove a practical option for your business, then you may choose to consider a contribution through Training Benchmark A to Victoria University’s Scholarship Fund.
