Course essentials

Our Bachelor of Commerce, taught in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, will ready you for work in a variety of finance-related areas. The curriculum has a ‘job-ready’ focus and is aligned with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK).

Our course provides a flexible schedule with a emphasis in a range of technical and professional competencies in finance. You’ll develop highly valued business skills such as:

  • critical thinking
  • teamwork/collaboration
  • effective communication.

You will engage with important ethical principles and develop appropriate professional conduct towards clients, employers, and community. You will investigate contemporary issues examining the integrity and sustainability of financial markets while making decisions as ethical and responsible global professionals.

Practical learning & industry connections

We place a great emphasis on practical workplace preparation in this course through industry integration, workplace-based projects and valuable participation in our mentoring program.

This course gives you the opportunity for:

  • an  study tour that blends formal study with experiential learning through overseas travel in Asia or Europe
  • industry placement
  • workplace-based projects with authentic case-based scenarios
  • taking part in a mentoring program.

Industry exposure is provided through our Adjunct Professors and regular guest speakers from leading financial bodies. 

CFA endorsement

This course has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program.  

 This status is granted to institutions whose degree program(s) incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provide students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the CFA exams.

Credit for skills and past study

If you have completed study with another university or institution and believe you are eligible to receive credit for skills and past study, you can apply for advanced standing.

Course objectives

On successful completion of the Bachelor Commerce graduates will be able to:

  1. Integrate conceptual understandings of commerce, quantitative methods, economics, accounting, finance, investment, international business and relevant legal areas with advanced specialist knowledge within the commerce discipline;
  2. Critically review, analyse, adapt and apply broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge of commerce in diverse contexts, including political and global contexts;
  3. Critically analyse and exhibit ethical and professional judgement and effective decisions, by adapting the knowledge and skills to both anticipate and solve complex problems in local and international commercial contexts across of a range of economically diverse markets;
  4. Communicate a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and skills in both oral and written form to a range of audiences;
  5. Reflect on personal learning and skills in relation to career goals and implement effective, creative strategies to promote lifelong learning and pathways to further learning.

Course structure

To attain the award of Bachelor of Commerce, students will be required to complete 288 credit points (equivalent to 24 units) consisting of:

  • 48 credit points (equivalent to 4 units) of College Core studies;

  • 96 credit points (equivalent to 8 units) of Professional Core studies 
  • 96 credit points (equivalent to 8 units) of Major studies from the list below
  • 48 credit points (equivalent to 4 units) of Minor studies from the list below

Minors not available for students completing the Applied Finance Major are:-

  • BMIAPF Applied Finance
  • BMIFNM Finance Mentoring
  • BMIFWI Finance Work Integrated Learning

Minors not available for students completing the International Business Major are:-

  • BMIIBU International Business
  • BMIIBM International Business Mentoring
  • BMIIBW International Business Work Integrated Learning

Admission requirements

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course.

Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

If you do not meet the minimum requirements you may be eligible for one of our special admission programs. We also encourage you to explore our study pathways to help you reach your goal.

  • TAFE: Successful completion of a Diploma in the field of business or finance with a minimum 75% of GPA score or equivalent. Students may be eligible for advanced standing of up to 48 credit points (equivalent to four units of study).
  • Year 12: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.
  • Mature: Applicants with a minimum of 5 years relevant professional experience.
  • Other: Bachelor of Business students who successfully complete the first year of their degree with minimum 75% of GPA score or equivalent will be eligible for advanced standing of up to 48 credit points (equivalent to four units of study).
