Melbourne is a major legal centre in Australia. The legal system here is known as a common law system, meaning there are two sources of law in Australia: legislation enacted by parliament and judges deciding cases in courts. This contrasts to a civil law system found in countries such as Mexico and Germany.
Exploring differences and similarities between different legal systems and the laws in a foreign jurisdiction adds depth to your legal knowledge and experience.
This program will give you the opportunity to visit courts and tribunals including the Supreme Court, County Court, Melbourne Magistrates' Court and Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
It will give you deep insights into a different legal system and culture and the opportunity to share your knowledge with Australian and other international law students, while increasing your experience for future employment in a global legal environment.
Program structure
To receive the Certificate, you must successfully complete four units of study (courses) in one semester.
Semester 1
And two (2) of the any of the following units:
Semester 2
And two (2) of the any of the following units:
- BLB2125 Real Property Law
- BLB2122 Advocacy and Communication
- LLW3003 Court and Tribunal Internship
- LLW3002 Alternative Dispute Resolution
- LLW1001 Criminal Law
Entry requirements
To be part of the Study Abroad Certificate program, students must have:
- completed one year of tertiary study
- fulfilled their home institution’s academic requirements for overseas study
- have a 2.5 Grade Point Average on a 4.0 scale
- provided documentation supporting their English language proficiency.
