The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.

When IRA leaders negotiate an autonomous Free State under the British crown, Teddy defends the pragmatic best possible deal at this stage. Damien however joins the large seceding faction which holds nothing less then a socialist republic will do. The result is another civil war, bloodily opposing former Irish comrades in arms, even the brothers.

Kinshasa is normally one of Africa's busiest, most bustling even chaotic cities. But on the streets of the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital barely anything moved on Wednesday. Shopes closed and public transport ground to a halt. A nationwide strike was called for by the country's main opposition group following the annoucement that presidential elections will take place in April 2018, instead of next month when they were due. Critics of President Joseph Kabila say he's using the delay to extend his 15 year long rule, and in so doing, violating the constitution. But President Kabila's government has claimed the election must be postponed so they can properly prepare. So, is this African country sliding into a crisis? This is the first episode of 'Invest DRC', a series that set out to explore the economy of the Democratic Republic of Congo, potentially one of the world's richest countries but one with a troubled past. I worked on this as a Senior Producer and scripted and voiced the packages in this episode.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has cut its economic growth forecast for 2016 from 9 percent to 4.3 percent. [Low commodity prices are continuing to erode much-needed government revenue. Africa's top copper producer relies on its mining and smaller oil industry for most of its export earnings. Copper output slumped 14 percent in the first half of the year. Cobalt, the metal used in lithium-ion batteries, slid by 13 percent over the same period. The government has also slashed its budget by 22 percent in response to low commodity revenues. Mozambique is another country battling with low commodity prices. Nearly 4000 coal miners have lost their jobs in the past year, as mining firms such as Brazil's Vale scale back production. Vale operates an open cast coal mine in the north-west. It's le...
Jean Jacques Purusi Sadiki of the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ministry of Employment, Labor, and Social Welfare, says his country has all the natural resources it needs to create jobs and a strong economy -- but a lack of leadership gets in the way. Good governance, combating impunity, and the rule of law are all lacking in the DRC he says, but will only be solved by action from within the country -- not by the United Nations or other countries. He cites Liberia as an example of how a country can fix its own economic issues through good leadership. One place the DRC may find this leadership is in its diaspora of 7 million Congolese living abroad. 90 percent of these people have at least a master's degree, and some are returning to help the country grow.

At present, the Republic of Congo has a mere dozen of banks, the minister said, and the government is keen to see the establishment of the nation’s first investment bank. The Congolese government would also like to see the foundation of a national development bank with the help of international institutions, he added. These efforts come as part of a drive to diversify the economy in order to reduce its dependence on oil, the minister said. He said that he hopes major oil companies such as Chevron and ExxonMobil w...

June 9th & 10th, 2011 - Kaaitheater Studios, Brussels Created with and for Congolese dancer Jolie Ngemi, this short and powerful solo starts in the present tense while looking towards the future: popular Congolese dances sampled from music videos and local night clubs are taken up, repeated and transformed. Confronting the codes of contemporary western dance, Jolie goes in search of a contemporary dance form that she can call her own. Taking the audience with her on this journey, she adopts the role of the Atalaku, or MC, who in Congolese music urges the dancers and those in the crowd to move. Her voice, sampled and transformed through a live interaction with French musician Yann Leguay, becomes the music that accompanies her, entering into resonance with her movement. More: http://ww...

U.S. military leaders are promising a small-scale, but effective plan for dealing with terrorist threats throughout Africa. The head of the military's Africa Command says that U.S. forces are carrying out reconnaissance missions across the continent but the U.S. has no plans to expand its permanent presence in Africa. VOA Pentagon correspondent Luis Ramirez reports.
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN a...
People of Tanzania, SA and MALAWI, the people of DRC are thankful to the troop contribution your country has made to fight terrorism in our native country. Although we strongly regret the loss of one of Tanzanian forces, and the wounded among the SA army, we are speechless and will be always thankful for your back up. The DRC has been harassed by its neighbor RWANDA that has kept sending terrorists despite the death of 5 million. Congolese are to blame because its government did not back its patriotic soldiers. The last week of your troops involvement on the battlefield has made a big difference. The Rwandan army that was posted lest than 2 miles from Goma (a town of 1 million people) have been pushed back to more than 13 miles. The Congo forces are also working in discipline lines and hav...
The French mission in Mali 2012 -14 The Northern Mali Conflict, Mali Civil War, or Mali War refers to armed conflicts that started from January 2012 between the northern and southern parts of Mali in Africa. On 16 January 2012, several insurgent groups began fighting a campaign against the Malian government for independence or greater autonomy for northern Mali, an area known as Azawad. The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), an organization fighting to make Azawad an independent homeland for the Tuareg people, had taken control of the region by April 2012. Operation Barkhane is an ongoing anti-terrorist operation in Africa's Sahel region, which commenced 1 August 2014. It consists of a 3,000-strong French force, which will be permanent and headquartered in N’Djamena, t...

Since 2009, the militant Islamist group known as Boko Haram has wreaked havoc in northern Nigeria. Instilling terror through bombings, abductions, and beheadings, Boko Haram is fighting to create an Islamic state in the most populous country in Africa. VICE News traveled to Nigeria to embed with the country's army as it ramped up its fight against Boko Haram, whose rise has caused a state of emergency. It is also a large conglomeration of values, experience, regimentation, customs, traditions, ethos and culture. United nations, 18 February 2009 - Daily Briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today condemned the cowardly terror tactics employed by an armed militia from Rwanda, which has caused havoc in the eastern part of the vast African nation for years. The Forces Démocratiques pour la Libération du Rwanda (FDLR) is conducting a campaign of terror, systematically raping, murdering, looting and abducting civilians in an attempt to undermine the joint Rwanda/DRC military offensive aimed at ridding the group from the DRC. Criticism of the War on Terror addresses the issues, morals, ethics, efficiency, economics, and other questions surrounding the War on Terror and made against the phrase itself, calling it a misnomer. The notion of a "war" against "terrorism" has proven highly contentious, with critics charging that it has been exploited by participating governments to pursue long-standing policy/military objectives, reduce civil liberties, and infringe upon human rights. It is argued that the term war is not appropriate in this context (as in War on Drugs), since there is no identifiable enemy, and that it is unlikely international terrorism can be brought to an end by military means. Other critics, such as Francis Fukuyama, note that "terrorism" is not an enemy, but a tactic; calling it a "war on terror...

Kinshasa Capital city of Democratic Republic of Congo.
While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - ...
The Congo contains some of the most fascinating natural wildlife habitats in Africa. This fascinating country is home to a remarkable creature, the Mountain Gorilla. Our destination is the Virunga National Park that extends along the borders of the Congo, Uganda and Ruanda. Close to the border with Uganda is the village of Goma that contains several dwellings and a good market that displays an amazing variety of exotic fruit. After a short but very welcome break the journey continues in a four-wheel drive minibus but this does not last very long as it soon becomes necessary to travel by foot, a daunting prospect but also one inspired by the possibility of spotting the rare Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat on a journey that will take around two days. The excitement continues to moun...

3x3 52 486 is an experimental short film made by Attila Lorant. The film was made with stop motion technique, photographed frame by frame. Approximately 7500 photos from 8 countries (Czech Republic, Egypt, Congo, Hungary, Sweden, Turkey, United States of America and Spain) were used in this production. This experimental film constitutes a part of a new project - called 3x3 52 486 - of a versatile artist (photographer, writer, director, designer) Attila Lorant. The gist of the project is a 148 pages long photo album, along which an other film was also produced - a 5 minutes long "How to make" documentary. From this project, an exhibition and an iPad application are also coming out soon. “3x3 is a mosaic, a diary, an encyclopaedia. It is a personal project, a self-confession. It’s a medit...

Congo, get to, get to Congo
Get to, get to Congo
Get to, get to Congo
Get to, get to Congo
Now could we go to the square they call Congo?
I need to go and lay my feet upon the stone
Where the first of us stood before, before, before
Where we sat and played to revive our depleted souls
Where we went to forget our freedom was not our own
Where we went to hold onto the memories of way back home
Now could we?
Now could we?
Now could we go?
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Now could we go to the square they call Congo?
I need to go and lay my feet upon the stones
Where the first of us stood before, before, before
Where we made music in remembrance of human bodies sold
Where the sound of an old pain became a new music of hope
Where they paved me a road so I could get to Congo
Now could we?
Now could we?
Now could we go?
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
And I would not be here today if they had not been
So displaced, so displaced, but still
But still they made time to sing and play a song
A song in Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
Get to Cong, get to Congo
Get to Cong, get to Cong Congo
