Course essentials

This course helps you develop the skills and knowledge in a range of Information Technology fields allowing you to progress your qualifications and career in IT.

This course has been specially designed for students who do not meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Information Technology. You will receive additional support provided over a longer 15-week semester, where you can build the literacy and numeracy skills needed for a career in IT, and prepare for the transition into university study.

Successful completion of the Diploma provides guaranteed entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Information Technology.

In this course you will:

  • design databases
  • write computer programs in Python
  • connect databases to dynamic websites
  • schedule ICT development using Microsoft Project
  • use Linux and study towards industry certification (such as CCNA).

Careers

Graduates of this diploma will be qualified for entry-level  work in the IT industry, including:

  • computer and network support
  • website development
  • database support

Successful completion of the Diploma provides guaranteed entry into the second year of Bachelor of Information Technology, where you can continue to develop the technical, analytical, managerial, leadership and interpersonal skills required for graduate entry as an IT professional.

On completion of this course you will be guaranteed entry into the following Bachelor degree and in some cases receive credit for your degree:

Credit for skills and past study

If you have completed study with another university or institution and believe you are eligible to receive credit for skills and past study, you can apply for advanced standing.

Applications for advanced standing can be made after a discussion with your course coordinator or academic adviser.

Course objectives

Upon successful completion of the Diploma of Information Technology, graduates will be able to:

  1. Apply a broad body of fundamental knowledge of information technologies in selected areas of study from the areas of: networking,  ICT management, web application development, operating systems and database.
  2. Use the latest information technologies, and with self- learning capabilities, solve real-world ICT related problems.
  3. Exhibit a range interpersonal and academic skills with a strong focus on development practice in an independent or collaborative environment;
  4. Present foundation technical and theoretical knowledge and skills for industry certifications from reputable international vendors CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC-1).

Admission requirements

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course.

Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

If you do not meet the minimum requirements you may be eligible for one of our special admission programs. We also encourage you to explore our study pathways to help you reach your goal.

  • TAFE: Any Certificate IV in Information Technology or equivalent.
  • Year 12: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in any other English.
  • Mature: Applicants with relevant work, education and/or community experience will be considered for admission to the course.
