Hyundai has set about making its new generation i30 small car even more appealing.

The South Korean car maker has detailed its simplified five-tier model range for the upcoming new small hatch with more gear and price reductions at the forefront as the race heats up for Australia's best selling passenger car.

A base manual i30 Active will be priced at $20,950 before on-road costs, which represents a saving of $500 over the outgoing model, and places it the same vicinity of the $20,490 Mazda3 Neo and $20,190 Toyota Corolla Ascent.

While the price has been reduced, the i30 Active has also been geared-up with a new 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB+ digital radio, new 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights and auto headlights.

Active models have the choice of two engines, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit that produces 120kW and 23Nm - a rise of 13kW and 28Nm - that is mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Hyundai also offer a 1.6-litre turbo diesel unit that is good for 100kW and 280Nm when paired with a six-speed manual, torque gets a 20Nm bump to 300Nm when equipped with a seven-speed dual clutch.

The next model grade up is the new Elite, which consists of just one variant that is powered by the same turbo diesel engine as the Active and has no manual option. The Elite is priced from $28,950.

An Elite specification grade adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster, electronic parking brake, keyless entry with push button start, wireless charging pad and a range of safety tech that includes autonomous emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert and driver fatigue warning.

The top-spec i30 Premium is again only powered by the 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto only, it is priced from $33,950 which is $1250 less than the previous generation.

Premium specification adds front park assist, glass sunroof, chrome side moulding, ventilated and heated front seats and power driver's seat over the Elite.

Hyundai sportier SR model grade gets a new 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 150kW and 265Nm - a jump of 26kW and 64Nm over existing 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol powered SR models - and is paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch auto.

SR models are priced from $25,950, $600 less than the current model.

The i30 SR model grade is similarly specified as the Elite but adds 18-inch alloy wheels, the SR also does away with the full-size spare of the outgoing model. However, manual variants miss out on some key safety tech including autonomous emergency braking, driver fatigue alert, lane keep assist and smart cruise control.

Hyundai's i30 SR Premium is mechanically the same as the SR except that it doesn't offer a manual transmission and generally mirrors the i30 Premium's equipment levels mentioned above. Pricing starts from $33,950, which is $2700 more expensive than the current SR Premium point of entry.

The new Hyundai i30 goes on sale nationally at the end of April.
