A poet is a person who writes poetry. Poets may describe themselves as such or be described as poets by others. A poet may simply be a writer of poetry, or may perform their art to an audience.
The work of a poet is essentially one of communication, either expressing ideas in a literal sense, such as writing about a specific event or place, or metaphorically. Poets have existed since antiquity, in nearly all languages, and have produced works that vary greatly in different cultures and time periods. Throughout each civilization and language, poets have used various styles that have changed through the course of literary history, resulting in a history of poets as diverse as the literature they have produced.
In Ancient Rome, professional poets were generally sponsored by patrons, wealthy supporters including nobility and military officials. For instance, Gaius Cilnius Maecenas, friend to Caesar Augustus, was an important patron for the Augustan poets, including both Horace and Virgil.

New Voices is the only American national magazine written for and by Jewish college students. Published since 1991 by the independent, non-profit, student-run Jewish Student Press Service, New Voices is read by over 10,000 students across the United States and abroad.
The magazine is produced by one recent college graduates in New York and dozens of student writers from campuses across the country on a shoestring annual budget.
The Jewish Student Press Service was established in 1971 to provide quality, student-written articles to a then-thriving national network of local Jewish campus publications. Many of today's most accomplished Jewish journalists got their start at the Jewish Student Press Service. Current and former editors of The New York Jewish Week, The New Jersey Jewish News, Dissent, The Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Lilith, and Sh'ma to name a few are all past contributors to the Jewish Student Press Service.
In 1991, faced with a decline in the number of individual campus publications, the Jewish Student Press Service changed its focus and began publishing its own magazine, called New Voices.
Brave New Voices was created by Youth Speaks Inc in 1998 (a non-profit organization from San Francisco promoting youth intellectual and artistic self-development) after the inaugural Youth Speaks Teen slam poetry in San Francisco – the first poetry slam dedicated to youth in the world. Since that time, Brave New Voices has grown to represent youth ages 13–19 from all across the United States and several cities and countries from around the world. BNV is the largest ongoing spoken word event in the world. Cities compose teams of their top 4-6 youth poets to bring to the festival. When the festival began only four teams participated, but the competition has grown to over 50 participating teams.
The final contestants are judged by a jury composed of artistic personalities. In 2010, the jury was composed by the illusionist and TV host Penn Jillette, poets Mayda Del Valle and Beau Sia, musician Talib Kweli and actress Sanaa Lathan.
The finale of Brave New Voices in 2008 and 2010 is aired on HBO.
Poets of The Fall (POTF) is a Finnish rock band from Helsinki, Finland. The group consists of Marko Saaresto (lead vocals), Olli Tukiainen (lead guitar) and Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen (keyboards, production). On tour the band is supported by Jani Snellman (bass guitar), Jaska Mäkinen (rhythm guitar, backing vocals) and Jari Salminen (drums, percussion).
The band was founded on 25 April 2003 by Saaresto and Tukiainen. Tukianen had written multiple songs for Saaresto's previous band Playground and performed with Finnish jazzband Pohjoinen Syke previously.
In 2003, Saaresto's friend Sami Järvi, a script-writer working at Remedy Entertainment handed Saaresto a poem he had written, asking him to turn it into a song to use in Remedy's video game Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. The song, entitled Late Goodbye, was used as the ending-theme of the game as well as a recurring motif, being sung and whistled by multiple characters. It was produced by Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen, who joined the band shortly after due to Saaresto and Tukiainen liking his work.

One of the best part!. Love every single word of this part!
Hailing from New Haven, Connecticut and joined by her band DigFlo, well-travelled wordsmith Akua Naru gives us an exclusive live performance of "Poetry: How Does It Feel"; a sensually exquisite, jazzy jam of spoken word.
This video was challenging as differing views on hundreds of poets were analysed. Views finally from a range of websites were considered and the list compiled of 10 poets who were very popular in terms of rankings and website references. The top 5 were strongly ahead of the others and several were very closely ranked to the included ones (eg Yeats and Keats) but the list was limited to 10 poets. Two poets on the final list won the Nobel Prize, that prize was introduced after several of them had died and that is probably why only two have been awarded that prize.

Episode 1/2 The first episode explores the stylistic shifts in poetry as the 20th century dawned, when poets began to jettison tradition for modern forms of expression. They would reject the sentiment and moralising of Victorian poetry and call for a new directness and economy of language fitting for a postwar generation. Featuring the works of Ezra Pound, TS Eliot, Edith Sitwell, WH Auden, Stevie Smith, John Betjeman, RS Thomas and Dylan Thomas.
Grupa „The Sound Poets” klausītājiem nodod jaunu dziesmu „Joprojām”, tādējādi piesakot tāda paša nosaukuma akustisko koncertu sēriju, kas pavasarī apceļos visu Latviju. For the latest info on the next RHETORIC or new poems coming out on YouTube or DVD check out http://rhetoric.p4cm.com. The latest RHETORIC was off the hook. If you missed it or even if you were there, you should see the closing poem which left everyone in awe. Christ is coming back for a bride without spot wrinkle or blemish. This poem by Ezekiel and Janette...iks asks you if you'll be Ready or Not. All to often though, we try to do the cleaning and the planning when we Christ should take the lead. We say let him lead and the wedding day will be just as it should be... all for His glory.

Spring starts when a heartbeat's poundin'
When the birds can be heard
Above the reckonin' carts
Doing some final accounting
Lava flowin' in Super Farmer's direction
He's been gettin' reprieve from the heat
In the frozen-food section, yeah
Don't tell me what the poets are doing
Don't tell me that they're talkin' tough
Don't tell me that they're anti-social
Somehow not anti-social enough, alright
And porn speaks to it's splintered legions
To the pink amid the withered corn
Stalks in them winter regions, yeah
While aiming at the archetypal father
He said with such broad and tentative swipes
Why do you even bother, yeah
Don't tell me what the poets are doing
Those Himalayas of the mind
Don't tell me what the poets been doing
In the long grasses over time
Don't tell me what the poets are doing
On the street and the epitome of vague
Don't tell me how the universe is altered
When you find out how he gets paid, alright
If there's nothing more that you need now
Lawn cut by bare-breasted women
Beach bleached towels within reach for the women
