There are currently four hospitals in Chicago that maintain level 1 adult trauma centers, where the critically injured, including victims of gun violence, must go for life-saving treatment. But not one of those hospitals is located on the city's often-violent South Side.
According to a 2013 study published in the American Journal of Public Health, victims shot more than 5 miles from a trauma center have a lower rate of survival. Adult trauma victims on the South Side face travel distances as great as 15 miles, prompting community protests and making families wonder whether loved ones could have been saved with more immediate care.
VICE News went to the South Side to see the consequences of the city's trauma-care desert, and to find out what's being done to change it.

London's Air Ambulance doctors race to stabilize a 19-year-old woman after she is hit by a van, and the team's investigation reveals a potential spine injury with grave consequences.
Weak, nauseous and pale, an elderly woman's confusion makes the hunt for clues to her illness difficult. After a series of tests, the team finally make an unexpected diagnosis. After a 45-year-old cyclist with a head injury is rushed in by helicopter, the patient's memory loss provides the team with a vital clue to his condition.

Trauma center
A trauma center (or trauma centre) is a hospital equipped and staffed to provide care for patients suffering from major traumatic injuries such as falls, motor vehicle collisions, or gunshot wounds. A trauma center may also refer to an emergency department (also known as a "casualty department" or "accident & emergency") without the presence of specialized services to care for victims of major trauma.
In the United States, a hospital can receive trauma center status by meeting specific criteria established by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and passing a site review by the Verification Review Committee. Official designation as a trauma center is determined by individual state law provisions. Trauma centers vary in their specific capabilities and are identified by "Level" designation: Level-I (Level-1) being the highest, to Level-III (Level-3) being the lowest (some states have five designated levels, in which case Level-V (Level-5) is the lowest).
The highest levels of trauma centers have access to specialist medical and nursing care including emergency medicine, trauma surgery, critical care, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, anesthesiology and radiology, as well as highly sophisticated surgical and diagnostic equipment. Lower levels of trauma centers may only be able to provide initial care and stabilization of a traumatic injury and arrange for transfer of the victim to a higher level of trauma care.

When Seconds Count
When Seconds Count is the sixth album from American rock band Survivor, released in October 1986. It is the second album featuring vocalist Jimi Jamison. The album included the hit single, "Is This Love", which peaked at #9 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1987. The album reached #49 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
This is one of the many Survivor albums briefly taken out of print in 2009. However, it was remastered and reissued in 2011 and distributed by Rock Candy Records.

There are currently four hospitals in Chicago that maintain level 1 adult trauma centers, where the critically injured, including victims of gun violence, must go for life-saving treatment. But not one of those hospitals is located on the city's often-violent South Side.
According to a 2013 study published in the American Journal of Public Health, victims shot more than 5 miles from a trauma center have a lower rate of survival. Adult trauma victims on the South Side face travel distances as great as 15 miles, prompting community protests and making families wonder whether loved ones could have been saved with more immediate care.

After a 45-year-old cyclist with a head injury is rushed in by helicopter, the patient's memory loss provides the team with a vital clue to his condition.

Carol Massoud-Leroy, M.Ed., LADC, LMHC
Practice Manager-15 years at Health Care Resource Centers
(formerly known as Community Substance Abuse Centers
Clinical Director-5 years at Community Substance Abuse Centers in
Western Massachusetts. Oversaw the clinical departments for four
different sites. Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Boston College Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Boston State College CARF accreditation surveyor for 15 years. Member of a team that conducts accreditation visits nationally for Outpatient Treatment Programs.
Aliza Castro LCSW, LADC of Hartford Dispensary.
Aliza Castro has worked in the behavioral health field for over twenty years. Ms. Castro has worked both in prevention and treatment and is currently a Senior Clinical Supervisor for the Hartford Dispensary.
She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor, supervises Hartford Dispensary’s Weston Street Clinic and is a member of the Hartford Dispensary executive team.
Ms. Castro manages a methadone maintenance facility with 900+
patients. She strives to deliver quality behavioral health care
treatment to opioid addicted individuals in the Greater Hartford
community. Ms. Castro has presented at The American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence national conferences on “Integrating Evidence Based Therapies for Co-Occurring Disorders” and “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for PTSD”.
Katie Strahowski, APRN, FNP-C, is a Family Nurse Practitioner at
CleanSlate Centers’ 85 Gillette Street location in Hartford. Prior to
CleanSlate, she worked in an array of critical care settings at a Level 1 trauma hospital, where she witnessed the devastating
consequences of addiction on patients and their families. Katie is
passionate about fighting back against this deadly disease and
helping patients achieve the lives they want and deserve through
evidence-based addiction medicine and CleanSlate’s commitment to providing compassionate, individualized care.
Katie received her BSN from Saint Joseph College and her MSN from the University of St. Joseph.

View the press conference announcing the launch of Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) "Direct Project" with comments from Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer, White House; Dr. David Blumenthal, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology; and other key contributors.
The White House and ONC announced that providers and public health agencies in Minnesota and Rhode Island began exchanging health information using specifications developed by the Direct Project, an 'open government' initiative that calls on cooperative efforts by organizations in the health care and information technology sectors. (February 2, 2011)
The press conference was moderated by Farzad Mostashari, MD, ScM, Deputy National Coordinator for Programs and Policy, ONC, and includes remarks from Dr. David Blumenthal and Aneesh Chopra.
Designed as part of President Obama's 'open government' initiative to drive rapid innovation, the Direct Project last year brought together some 200 participants from more than 60 companies and other organizations. "This is a new approach to public sector leadership, and it works," said Chopra. "Instead of depending on a traditional top-down approach, stakeholders worked together to develop an open, standardized platform that dramatically lowers costs and barriers to secure health information exchange. The Direct Project is a great example of how government can work as a convener to catalyze new ideas and business models through collaboration."
The two pilot programs that have already begun using Direct Project-based information exchange are in Minnesota and Rhode Island:
Minnesota: Hennepin County Medical Center, Minnesota's premier Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, has been successfully sending immunization records to the Minnesota Department of Health. "This demonstrates the success that is possible through public-private collaborations," said James Golden, PhD, Minnesota's state health information technology coordinator.
Rhode Island: The Rhode Island Quality Institute (RIQI) has delivered a pilot project with two primary goals: (1) RIQI is improving patient care when patients are referred to specialists by demonstrating simple, direct provider-to-provider data; and (2) RIQI is leveraging Direct Project messaging as a means to securely feed clinical information, with patient consent from practice-based electronic health records to the state-wide health information exchange, current care, to improve quality by detecting gaps in care and making sure the full record is available to all care providers.
Other speakers included industry and government professionals who helped make the Direct Project launch a success: Mark Briggs, MSc, Chief Executive Officer, VisionShare; Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer, Allscripts; Sean Nolan, Chief Architect, Microsoft Health Solutions; and, Albert Puerini, Jr, MD, President and CEO, Polaris Medical Management, President and CEO, Rhode Island Primary Care Physicians; and, Todd Park, Chief Technology Officer, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
