Heroes save crash victims

Police and a doctor save the lives of three people after an horrific crash on the Bruce Highway near Maryborough which claimed two lives. Nine News

Acting Inspector Paul Algie said it was a miracle more people did not die when a northbound vehicle veered right, clipping another car before slamming head-on into a third, causing both to burst into flames.

The crash instantly killed a 30-year-old Brisbane woman and her 22-year-old brother travelling in the third car, leaving the woman's son on life support in the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Inspector Algie praised local officers from nearby Tiaro, who hauled the two survivors from the first vehicle away from the crash just as petrol spilling over the road caught fire.

"I believe that their actions saved those people's lives," he told reporters in Maryborough on Tuesday.

"It's probably one of the worst accidents that I've been to in my career. It was certainly horrendous.

"It was very difficult for the emergency services who attended the scene and certainly, it is a miracle that more people weren't deceased as a result of this accident."

The crash, about 3.15pm Monday, brought a shocking end to a previously fatality-free Easter period on Queensland roads.

"We were very, very fortunate that there was a doctor travelling north, very close to where that accident occurred," Inspector Algie said.

"That doctor was able to provide life-saving support.

"We were also extremely fortunate that the police who attended from Tiaro were only two kilometres away from the accident scene."

The passengers in the second car, which was clipped as the first car veered to the right for an "unknown" reason were uninjured and pulled up further down the road.

Less than 16 hours later, a motorcyclist died on Tuesday morning in Hendra when his bike and a ute collided in the north-east Brisbane suburb.
