About Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island: Romance in the Reef

Hamilton Island is many-a-traveller’s idea of paradise: the largest uninhabited island of the Whitsundays, Hamilton boasts lush tropical vegetation that cascades onto white sandy beaches lapped by turquoise water. With plenty of secret nooks, you just might be able to find a private beach to relax on, completely undisturbed. But creature comforts and modern services are only a short golf cart ride away, as Hamilton Island offers a fully-fledged resort. While traffic to the island has increased in recent years, visitors can enjoy as much or as little interaction with others as they desire. Accommodation options vary, but there are plenty of holiday rentals with water views.

Holidays on the Water…

Predictably, water-based activities abound on the shores of Hamilton Island and further out to sea. Hamilton Island is located in the world-famous Great Barrier Reef, so there are plenty of opportunities to go snorkelling and diving amongst the colourful coral. Explore the reefs near the shore on your own or book a day trip and venture out into the heart of the Great Barrier Reef with qualified guides. Other popular water activities include sea kayaking, fishing, swimming, and for the adrenaline junkies out there, jet-skiing.

…And on Shore

Once you’ve gotten your fix of snorkelling, diving or otherwise frolicking in the warm waters, Hamilton Island offers plenty to do away from the waves and sand. Golf lovers can head to the 18-hole course designed by British open winner Peter Thompson at Hamilton Island Golf Club. If you prefer to leave manicured lawns behind, put on your hiking boots and go for a trek through the island’s bush. There are trails suitable to all fitness levels, most of which lead to scenic lookouts. If you would like to get acquainted with resident species, spend the afternoon at Hamilton Island Wildlife Park, where you can meet koalas and learn all about Australia’s iconic marsupials.

Guided Excursions on Hamilton Island

Exploring the island on your own can be rewarding, but sometimes you may wish to hire the services of a guide to learn more about your surroundings. To this end, a number of day trips and tours can be organised. If you would like to take in the majestic island and reefs from up high, you can book a helicopter tour. If you prefer to get closer to local marine life, you can sign up for a wildlife cruise. Fishing charters are also available for rental. Finally, if you’re more of a land creature, you can participate in an inland ATV or buggy tour.

Hamilton Island: a Destination for Romantics

Hamilton Island creates the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway, whether you’re on your honeymoon or are celebrating twenty years together. As the island remains uninhabited, there are still some little-known beaches and alcoves, away from the resort area, where you can sit back with a picnic and watch the sun set. Alternately, indulge in a little glamour and dress to the nines for dinner at one of the high-end restaurants by the marina. For fresh, local seafood, try Bommie, a favourite upscale joint offering water views. During the day, relax with a couple’s massage at a spa.

Getting to Hamilton Island

Accessing the Whitsundays’ largest uninhabited island is easy, as Hamilton features its own airport with direct flights from most major Australian cities, including Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns. Once you’re on the island, you can enjoy the right combination of isolation and convenience, with modern amenities a short distance from your rental, and the call of nature at every turn.
