• Taxation statistics

    Our annual publication, Taxation statistics, provides a comprehensive statistical summary of information taxpayers report to us. We present information sourced from:

    • the income tax returns of individuals, companies, super funds, partnerships and trusts
    • annual returns for fringe benefits tax (FBT) and goods and services tax (GST)
    • business activity statements (BAS) and instalment activity statements (IAS)
    • schedules for rental properties, capital gains tax (CGT) and international dealings
    • superannuation member contribution statements (MCS)
    • other information reported to us in relation to excise, the pay as you go (PAYG) system and charitable institutions.

    Taxation statistics also provides data on the time-based cost of compliance and industry benchmarks in the form of financial and activity statement ratios.

    Ad hoc data requests

    Where resources permit, we may be able to respond to specific ad-hoc requests for data not covered by Taxation statistics. To register your data request for consideration, email us at taxstats@ato.gov.au.

    In some cases we may not be able to release the data due to confidentiality issues. However, where we can respond, we make these datasets available by publishing them on data.gov.auExternal Link.

    View our 2008–09 graphic representations of statistics – drawn from millions of individual tax returns – as 100 people.

    The information in individuals' tax returns is represented as a population of 100 people. This makes it possible to present statistical information about more than 12 million tax returns in easily understood graphics.

    The statistics have been reproduced for the 2012–13 income year.
