Serena Williams appeared to inadvertently reveal on social media on Wednesday that she is pregnant. A photograph on her Snapchat story showed Williams posing sideways in a yellow bathing suit with a protruding stomach. The image, which appeared to be taken into a mirror, was captioned “20 weeks.”
The photo was later deleted, but a spokeswoman for Williams, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed that she was indeed pregnant. “I’m happy to confirm that Serena is expecting a baby this fall,” Novak said in a statement. She added that Williams will not play again this year but was looking forward to doing so in 2018.
The confirmation came after a day of rampant speculation that extended even to the global governing body of women’s tennis.
The Women’s Tennis Association, which deleted its initial tweet congratulating Williams on her pregnancy, later said in a statement: “We have not been informed nor do we have confirmation. We will let you know once we have further information.”
Williams, 35, has not played a match since winning her 23rd Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open on Jan. 28, when she would have been close to two months pregnant, if the caption on her deleted photo was accurate.
Williams and Alexis Ohanian, an American businessman and a co-founder of Reddit, announced their engagement in late December.
Williams is the second leading women’s tennis player to announce a pregnancy in the last year. Victoria Azarenka, a former No. 1 player and two-time Grand Slam champion, left the circuit in June and gave birth to a son, Leo, in December. Azarenka, 27, is planning to return to competition in July after Wimbledon.
By winning in Australia, Williams broke her tie with Steffi Graf for the most Grand Slam singles titles in the Open era. She ranks behind only Margaret Court’s 24 on the career list. Court, an Australian, won the last three of those titles in 1973.
