Skoda has given a glimpse of its electric destiny.

The Czech brand debuted the Skoda Vision E concept at the 2017 Shanghai motor show, and is the brand's first fully-electric concept car.

It is based on the Volkswagen Group's new MEB electric vehicle platform, which also underpins VW's new electric I.D. Crozz concept shown in China this week.

The two electric concepts from the Volkswagen Group also share the same powertrain with a combination of two electric motors - a front mounted 75kW and a rear mounted 150kW unit - making a combined 225kW.

Power is stored in an 83kWh battery and combined with regenerative braking technology, Skoda claims that the Vision E is capable of driving up to 500km before needing a recharge.

Skoda has also envisioned the Vision E concept to come with advanced autonomous driving technology. These driverless features encompass autopilot functions that can drive the vehicle during city traffic and on highways without human input, while also overtaking, changing lanes and look for and park in free parking spots. The Czech car maker has said these actions are possible with the use of an array of cameras and a variety of sensors.

An electric car allows for some more exterior design freedom with the removal of a combustion engine removing the need for a front grille. Skoda has removed its signature front grille and instead the main feature of the front styling are two LED lighting strips that run the length of the front fascia.

A smooth roofline gives the SUV concept a slightly coupe-like appearance while the side panels and front end feature a number of creases and scoops.

Inside the Vision E, Skoda has integrated numerous screens in the dash and the back of the rear seats to entertain former drivers and passengers when the car is in autonomous mode. And as with most concepts, the interior is dominated by an expansive windscreen and smooth, well-lit surfaces throughout.

The Vision E is Skoda's first step to achieving its plan of offering five different electric vehicles by 2025 and a range of plug-in hybrids from 2019.
