Stunning scenery
The Fleurieu Peninsula’s green hills are complemented by clifftops, beaches and the winding Murray River. You can sit on the wharf at Goolwa and see boats cruise under the Hindmarsh Bridge. Sail up to the Coorong and see pelicans tilt their heads, watching you as you pass their nests.
Get active
Get close to kangaroos in conservation parks. Watch little penguins come ashore at Granite Island. Feel the sand between your toes as you hunt for cockles. Take a charter trip and hook a fish. Cycle along the coast or stop by the wineries and find that special drop.
The Fleurieu Peninsula is a hive of activity in summer with a relaxed laid-back feel. There’s a different atmosphere in winter but it's just as beguiling. Watch the wild, thundering seas and see whales slapping their tails in the water. Warm-up beside a cellar door’s crackling fireplace and talk to the winemaker as you try their wines.
Spot a whale
It’s beautiful to see these creatures breaching and waving their fins as they play in the waters off Port Elliot, Middleton and Victor Harbor. They travel past on their way back to Antarctica in late winter and early spring.
The South Australian Whale Centre at Victor Harbor has a sightings information line and a wealth of information about whales and whale watching.
If you are whale watching and want to take that perfect photo – here's a tip. Count how many blows the whale takes before it dives away as they repeat the same number every time. The last blow in the sequence is often the best to photograph, as they lift themselves higher out of the water.
Self-drive and experience more
The Fleurieu Peninsula is featured in several self-drive itineraries. Given its close proximity to Adelaide, it's so easy to jump in the car and explore.
If you do have some more time, it's worthwhile trying the Nature, Sea and Vines Trail across four days. The Epicurean Way road trip, which features McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Clare Valley, highlights the best of the State's food and wine experiences.
