Melbourne is blanketed in a veil of smoke haze and fog as dozens of planned burns smoulder around the state.
Commuters this morning may smell smoke in the air as fire management authorities make the most of ideal conditions for the burns.
Melbourne's skyline is also obscured by fog expected to last throughout the morning until an unseasonable high of 26 degrees this afternoon.
A handful of flights at Melbourne Airport were cancelled this morning due to the foggy conditions, while motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads.
The fog was so thick the city skyline was not visible from North Melbourne.
Large fires of up to 2000 hectares are being patrolled by Forest Fire Management Victoria in locations such as Myrtleford, Bright, Marysville, Lakes Entrance and Bendigo.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Keris Arndt said this morning's fog was slowly lifting and clear by around 10am as the mercury rises.

"We get these kinds of fogs this time of year. There's plenty of moisture around and the nights are getting longer. There's also little to no wind around at the moment so perfect ingredients for fog."
"We're seeing pretty widespread fog over southern Victoria at the moment including Melbourne, but as we speak it's clearing at the airport and lifting in the city.
"It's almost more a blanket of very low cloud at the moment. We will continue to see conditions improve and it should be pretty clear by 9 to 10 am."

Mr Arndt said smoke haze would linger throughout Wednesday after a nocturnal inversion overnight which creates a layer of warm air, trapping smoke and fog.
"That's when we get those really hazy, polluted-looking mornings," he said.
"As we warm up it should clear up so throughout the morning but there will still be some smoke around."
Air quality in Melbourne will be fair on Wednesday, but areas including Macleod, Point Cook, Altona have been downgraded to poor.
Geelong air quality is also reading as very poor, according to Environmental Protection Authority Victoria.
Melbourne's temperature is expected to peak at 26 degrees at about 2pm, an unseasonably warm day for April.
The average peak temperature for April is 20.3 degrees.
