Elderly woman pleads not guilty over ex-husband's death

A 70-year-old woman charged over the stabbing death of her ex-husband has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental impairment to a count of murder.

Renee Louise Nolan entered the plea on Wednesday as she appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link.

Ms Nolan is alleged to have fatally stabbed her ex-husband, Harold George Nolan, 73, on October 24 last year. His body was found in his Mitcham unit after she contacted triple zero that day to report his death.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg on Wednesday ruled there was no justification for a committal hearing - which determines whether an accused person stands trial in a higher court - as a psychiatrist had found Ms Nolan was mentally impaired.

The case will now go before a Supreme Court judge.

Ms Nolan was remanded in custody to appear before the higher court on Friday for a directions hearing.
