Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. Having said that, it's another of her ‘outrageous' female characterisations, if in a slightly lower-key to her previous ‘bodice-ripping' dramas of the period. Interestingly she looks entirely different when made up for old age in the latter part of the film.
The film includes a good cast of well established forties film actors. Cecil Parker was never matinée idol stuff, but there's always interest in his performances - here as ‘Copper John', the arrogant, self-absorbed owner of the Hungry Hill mine. Michael Denison, as his son Henry, has little to do and is gone to death before you've even realised he exists, but Dennis Price, as Parker's other son, ‘Greyhound John', has a sympathetic role for once and gains our sympathy for his lack of interest in all things to do with mining while he courts Lockwood - and finally marries her to produce several children - one of which, ‘Wild Johnnie' becomes a spoilt mother's-darling brat, and is well played by Dermot Walsh. Jean Simmons looks charming in ringlets for years as the brothers' sister, though she also disappears from the story too soon. There are several other familiar names in the cast including Siobhan McKenna, Guy Rolfe, Eddie Byrne (seen in "Jack the Ripper" (1959) also on this channel), and Peter Murray, who became the famous radio DJ. It is also the debut film for Eileen Herlie and Dan O'Herlihy, and some names in the supporting cast who are uncredited include Margaret Lockwood's daughter Julia, at just four years old, Hazel Court and James Robertson Justice.
One ends up with the feeling that this film does not do justice to the long and rambling original novel, and had they spent a bit more money and filmed in colour it would have added considerably to the film as a whole, especially in the well-handled ballroom scenes where all the ladies appear to be wearing shades of white! The film was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, who also directed "Dangerous Moonlight", " Scrooge" "The Mark of Cain" and "Trottie True" (the last two are also on this channel), and the music was by John Greenwood who wrote scores for over forty movies from the 30s to the 50s, some of the more well-known might include "San Demetrio London", "The Last Days of Dolwyn", "Frieda" and "Broken Journey" (oh, dear! - another that's on my channel!!)

Dennis Price
Dennis Price (born Dennistoun Franklyn John Rose-Price, 23 June 1915 – 6 October 1973) was an English actor, best remembered for his role as Louis Mazzini in the film Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and for his portrayal of the omniscient valet Jeeves in 1960s television adaptations of P. G. Wodehouse's stories.
Biography
Early life
Price was born Dennistoun Franklyn John Rose-Price in Twyford in Berkshire, the son of Brigadier-General Thomas Rose Caradoc Price CMG DSO and his wife Dorothy, née Verey, daughter of Sir Henry Verey, Official Referee of the Supreme Court of Judicature. He attended Copthorne Prep School, Radley College and Worcester College, Oxford. He studied acting at the Embassy Theatre School of Acting.
Career
Price made his first appearance on stage at the Croydon Repertory Theatre in June 1937, followed by a London debut at the Queen's Theatre on 6 September 1937 in Richard II. He served in the Royal Artillery from March 1940 to June 1942 during World War II but quickly returned to acting after discharge, appearing with Noël Coward in This Happy Breed and Present Laughter and later as Charles Condomine in Blithe Spirit, which he later named in Who's Who in the Theatre as one of his two favourite parts along with the title role in André Obey's Noah.

An excellent British movie from 1948 with Jean Kent in particularly good form as a 16 year old (at her own age of 27!), and also starring Dennis Price (was there a film of the period he wasn't in?!), Flora Robson, Herbert Lom, Griffith Jones, in another of his viciously nasty roles, and Bonar Colleano. The film is awash with character actors of the period, some who went on to greater things, and includes Diana Dors, Beatrice Varley, Hugh McDermott, Peter Glenville, the (almost) ever-present Amy Veness, Jill Balcon (mother of Daniel Day-Lewis), Nora Swinburne, Michael Hordern, Garry Marsh, John Blythe, Danny Green, Jane Hylton, and Zena Marshall. In the film Flora Robson's probationary officer uses Kent's downfall story as an example to try to prevent miscreant Diana Dors from falling into the same trap - and pretty good stuff it is too. The script by Betty and Sydney Box was based on the novel "Night Darkens the Street" by Arthur la Bern, whose other books "It Always Rains on Sunday" and "Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square" were also filmed - the latter becoming Alfred Hitchcock's "Frenzy". Definitely one of the better late forties British movies, it was directed by David MacDonald with music composed by Lambert Williamson, who more often was credited as ‘music director'...

A film of delightful silliness, and just what the war-weary public wanted in 1947 - and in ‘glorious technicolour', to boot! Full of nasty people (only a few nice ones) - poor old Dennis Price is only given half an hour to show his arrogant and aggressive nature (in the film, of course!) before he's swept aside, but the kudos definitely goes to Basil Sydney in a magnificently cruel, self-indulgently drunken role, and don't overlook a telling part by the diminutive and almost mute Esma Cannon. It goes without saying that Margaret Lockwood, Pat Roc and Dermot Walsh are at the top of their game and are ably assisted by Cathleen Nesbitt, Linden Travers, Nora Swinburne, Ernest Thesinger, Jean Cadell, John Laurie, Torin Thatcher, Beatrice Varley and other notables of the period, though you'd be hard-pressed to notice Maurice Denham, Alfie Bass, Jane Hylton or Constance Smith. There is an un-credited appearance by Wilfred Bramble as a servant, if you can find him, and watch out for a small role, also uncredited, played by Susan Shaw starting about 33 minutes in. The story revolves around the rescue from a pond-dunking by Dermot Walsh of a gypsy girl (Lockwood, of course!) who claims to have second sight and is later accused of murder, and naturally falls for the ‘Lord of the Manor' who originally rescued her. The whole melodrama naturally has the obligatory ‘happy' ending! Based on a novel by Norah Lofts the film is directed by Bernard Knowles, who was photographer of many well-loved movies including "The 39 Steps" (1935); "Jamaica Inn" (1939) and "Gaslight" (1940) before going on to direct this, "Easy Money (1948), "The Perfect Woman" (1949) and others, and then moving into TV. The public of the time took to the film with relish, raising it to the 7th most popular film of the year, but today's retrospective ‘reviewers' give it short shrift and relegate it to the dustbin. Hungry Hill - 1947 - Margaret Lockwood, Dennis Price, Cecil Parker, Jean Simmons & Dermot Walsh
Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. Having said that, it's another of her ‘outrageous' female characterisations, if in a slightly lower-key to her previous ‘bodice-ripping' dramas of the period. Interestingly she looks entirely different when made up for old age in the latter part of the film.
The film includes a good cast of well established forties film actors. Cecil Parker was never matinée idol stuff, but there's always interest in his performances - here as ‘Copper John', the arrogant, self-absorbed owner of the Hungry Hill mine. Michael Denison, as his son Henry, has little to do and is gone to death before you've even realised he exists, but Dennis Price, as Parker's other son, ‘Greyhound John', has a sympathetic role for once and gains our sympathy for his lack of interest in all things to do with mining while he courts Lockwood - and finally marries her to produce several children - one of which, ‘Wild Johnnie' becomes a spoilt mother's-darling brat, and is well played by Dermot Walsh. Jean Simmons looks charming in ringlets for years as the brothers' sister, though she also disappears from the story too soon. There are several other familiar names in the cast including Siobhan McKenna, Guy Rolfe, Eddie Byrne (seen in "Jack the Ripper" (1959) also on this channel), and Peter Murray, who became the famous radio DJ. It is also the debut film for Eileen Herlie and Dan O'Herlihy, and some names in the supporting cast who are uncredited include Margaret Lockwood's daughter Julia, at just four years old, Hazel Court and James Robertson Justice.
One ends up with the feeling that this film does not do justice to the long and rambling original novel, and had they spent a bit more money and filmed in colour it would have added considerably to the film as a whole, especially in the well-handled ballroom scenes where all the ladies appear to be wearing shades of white! The film was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, who also directed "Dangerous Moonlight", " Scrooge" "The Mark of Cain" and "Trottie True" (the last two are also on this channel), and the music was by John Greenwood who wrote scores for over forty movies from the 30s to the 50s, some of the more well-known might include "San Demetrio London", "The Last Days of Dolwyn", "Frieda" and "Broken Journey" (oh, dear! - another that's on my channel!!)

Hungry Hill - 1947 - Margaret Lockwood, Dennis Price, Cecil Parker, Jean Simmons & Dermot Walsh
Adapted in 1947 from her own 7th novel by Daphne du Maurier, along with Terence Young (later to direct the first Bond movies), this is a rambling epic story of two feuding Irish families (curiously filmed entirely in British studios!) taking us through three generations of family fights over a copper mine sunk by the Brodricks, wealthy British incomers to Ireland, and the native Donovans. The general feel is that it is a somewhat lack-lustre film that condenses too much of the story without developing the characters enough - I rather agree. It is not actually a ‘Margaret Lockwood' film as such, but more an ensemble piece, as other characters in the story are equally important. An excellent British movie from 1948 with Jean Kent in particularly good form as a 16 year old (at her own age of 27!), and also starring Dennis Price (was there a film of the period he wasn't in?!), Flora Robson, Herbert Lom, Griffith Jones, in another of his viciously nasty roles, and Bonar Colleano. A film of delightful silliness, and just what the war-weary public wanted in 1947 - and in ‘glorious technicolour', to boot! Full of nasty people (only a few nice ones) - poor old Dennis Price is only given half an hour to show his arrogant and aggressive nature (in the film, of course!) before he's swept aside, but the kudos definitely goes to Basil Sydney in a magnificently cruel, self-indulgently drunken role, and don't overlook a telling part by the diminutive and almost mute Esma Cannon. Having said that, it's another of her ‘outrageous' female characterisations, if in a slightly lower-key to her previous ‘bodice-ripping' dramas of the period. Interestingly she looks entirely different when made up for old age in the latter part of the film.
The film includes a good cast of well established forties film actors. Cecil Parker was never matinée idol stuff, but there's always interest in his performances - here as ‘Copper John', the arrogant, self-absorbed owner of the Hungry Hill mine. Michael Denison, as his son Henry, has little to do and is gone to death before you've even realised he exists, but Dennis Price, as Parker's other son, ‘Greyhound John', has a sympathetic role for once and gains our sympathy for his lack of interest in all things to do with mining while he courts Lockwood - and finally marries her to produce several children - one of which, ‘Wild Johnnie' becomes a spoilt mother's-darling brat, and is well played by Dermot Walsh. Jean Simmons looks charming in ringlets for years as the brothers' sister, though she also disappears from the story too soon. There are several other familiar names in the cast including Siobhan McKenna, Guy Rolfe, Eddie Byrne (seen in "Jack the Ripper" (1959) also on this channel), and Peter Murray, who became the famous radio DJ. It is also the debut film for Eileen Herlie and Dan O'Herlihy, and some names in the supporting cast who are uncredited include Margaret Lockwood's daughter Julia, at just four years old, Hazel Court and James Robertson Justice.
One ends up with the feeling that this film does not do justice to the long and rambling original novel, and had they spent a bit more money and filmed in colour it would have added considerably to the film as a whole, especially in the well-handled ballroom scenes where all the ladies appear to be wearing shades of white! The film was directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, who also directed "Dangerous Moonlight", " Scrooge" "The Mark of Cain" and "Trottie True" (the last two are also on this channel), and the music was by John Greenwood who wrote scores for over forty movies from the 30s to the 50s, some of the more well-known might include "San Demetrio London", "The Last Days of Dolwyn", "Frieda" and "Broken Journey" (oh, dear! - another that's on my channel!!)

A film of delightful silliness, and just what the war-weary public wanted in 1947 - and in ‘glorious technicolour', to boot! Full of nasty people (only a few nice ones) - poor old Dennis Price is only given half an hour to show his arrogant and aggressive nature (in the film, of course!) before he's swept aside, but the kudos definitely goes to Basil Sydney in a magnificently cruel, self-indulgently drunken role, and don't overlook a telling part by the diminutive and almost mute Esma Cannon. It goes without saying that Margaret Lockwood, Pat Roc and Dermot Walsh are at the top of their game and are ably assisted by Cathleen Nesbitt, Linden Travers, Nora Swinburne, Ernest Thesinger, Jean Cadell, John Laurie, Torin Thatcher, Beatrice Varley and other notables of the period, though you'd be hard-pressed to notice Maurice Denham, Alfie Bass, Jane Hylton or Constance Smith. There is an un-credited appearance by Wilfred Bramble as a servant, if you can find him, and watch out for a small role, also uncredited, played by Susan Shaw starting about 33 minutes in. The story revolves around the rescue from a pond-dunking by Dermot Walsh of a gypsy girl (Lockwood, of course!) who claims to have second sight and is later accused of murder, and naturally falls for the ‘Lord of the Manor' who originally rescued her. The whole melodrama naturally has the obligatory ‘happy' ending! Based on a novel by Norah Lofts the film is directed by Bernard Knowles, who was photographer of many well-loved movies including "The 39 Steps" (1935); "Jamaica Inn" (1939) and "Gaslight" (1940) before going on to direct this, "Easy Money (1948), "The Perfect Woman" (1949) and others, and then moving into TV. The public of the time took to the film with relish, raising it to the 7th most popular film of the year, but today's retrospective ‘reviewers' give it short shrift and relegate it to the dustbin.
