Woman dies in Hume Highway crash, near Federal Highway

A woman has died and two children have been hospitalised after a single-vehicle crash on the Hume Highway on Tuesday morning.

NSW police say the woman was driving a Mitsubishi Pajero with five occupants, including two girls, aged 12 and 13.

One of the female passengers sustained serious injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital.

The remaining three occupants were taken to Goulburn Base Hospital as a precautionary measure with minor injuries.

The 12-year-old and 13-year-old girls are both in a stable condition at Goulburn Base Hospital, the condition of the third occupant transported to the hospital is unknown.

The Pajero was reportedly travelling towards Jindabyne along the Hume Highway, when the driver tried to avoid hitting an object near the Federal Highway turnoff, police said. The car hit the object causing the vehicle to roll onto its roof.

The highway was closed in both directions for a short time while a helicopter landed at the scene. Early reports incorrectly stated a truck was involved.

The crash happened around 10.15am, about one kilometre from the Federal Highway turn-off.

Traffic was affected in both directions for around six hours following the crash, with traffic queued up to 10km to Goulburn at its peak, and up to 3km of queues also reported northbound on the Federal Highway.

All lanes had reopened by 4pm, and traffic had reportedly eased by 4.30pm.
