You could say that Jason Cammisa knows cars. With a day job at Road & Track, he has full access to the world’s best vehicles—but still comes back to his humble Volkswagen Scirocco.
“This car definitely changed the path of my life because it forced me to be a mechanic,” Cammisa says, “I was in college…there was no way I would have been able to keep this car—I don’t think I could still have this car—if I had to pay somebody to work on it.”
Most owners would look at its constant maintenance requirements as a negative, but he says that, ultimately, it’s a valuable experience.
Even though he most often prefers the handling and driving dynamics of a rear-wheel-drive machine, the Scirocco’s balance and familiarity mean that it’s always been his favourite car. For a Senior Editor at Road & Track, that’s a big deal!
“The biggest surprise that people get is that I’ll leave a Bugatti Veyron Supersport or Porsche 918 Hybrid, and all I want to do is go home and drive my Scirocco,” he says. “It’s just that lovely combination of ‘reliable enough’, ‘fast enough’, ‘modern enough’ but raw—and works as the perfect bar for me to judge modern cars against.”
But the future worries him. “What’s going to happen when I’m a 60-year-old, and I need a water pump for it,” Cammisa says. “I hope one day this car is worth 100 grand, only so that it’s in someone’s best interest to please make me a fender—because the fenders ran out in 1999.”
With hopes car companies will start to provide more support for enthusiasts, Cammisa can at least be happy knowing that he owns one of the cleanest Sciroccos anywhere.

The Scirocco is a three-door coupe manufactured by German automaker Volkswagen, undergoing two generations of development between 1974 and 1992 and reintroduced in a third generation in August 2008.
The Scirocco name derives from the Italian word for the Sirocco wind — and the period in its history when Volkswagen named vehicles after prominent winds, including also Passat (after the German word for Trade wind), Golf (after Gulf Stream), Bora (after Bora), Polo (after Polar Winds), and Jetta (after Jet stream).
Volkswagen began work on the car during the early 1970s as the replacement for the aging Karmann Ghia coupe, and designated it the Typ 53 internally. The platform of the Golf/Rabbit and Jetta was used to underpin the new Scirocco, although almost every part of the car was re-engineered in favour of a sportier drive, and the model's all-new styling, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was sleeker and sportier than that of either the Golf or Jetta. Launched six months before the Golf, in order to resolve any teething troubles before production of the high volume hatchback started, the Scirocco went on sale in Europe in 1974 and in North America in 1975. Mark I models featured a range of four-cylinder engines with displacements from 1.1 to 1.6 L (1.7 L in North America (1975 1.5L (1471), 1976-77 1.6L, 1978 1.5L (1457), 1979-1981 1.6 (1588cc), 1981 1.7 (1715cc) USA models), all featuring a single-overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder. 1975-1978 model year USA vehicles had 4-speed manual transmissions; for the 1979 model year, USA vehicles had 5-speed manual transmissions. Automatic transmission-equipped Sciroccos were rare.

With a day job at Road & Track, he has full access to the world’s best vehicles—but still comes back to his humble Volkswagen Scirocco. “This car definitely changed the path of my life because it forced me to be a mechanic,” Cammisa says, “I was in college…there was no way I would have been able to keep this car—I don’t think I could still have this car—if I had to pay somebody to work on it.” Most owners would look at its constant maintenance requirements as a negative, but he says that, ultimately, it’s a valuable experience. “The biggest surprise that people get is that I’ll leave a Bugatti Veyron Supersport or Porsche 918 Hybrid, and all I want to do is go home and drive my Scirocco,” he says. “It’s just that lovely combination of ‘reliable enough’, ‘fast enough’, ‘modern enough’ but raw—and works as the perfect bar for me to judge modern cars against.”
But the future worries him. “What’s going to happen when I’m a 60-year-old, and I need a water pump for it,” Cammisa says. “I hope one day this car is worth 100 grand, only so that it’s in someone’s best interest to please make me a fender—because the fenders ran out in 1999.”
With hopes car companies will start to provide more support for enthusiasts, Cammisa can at least be happy knowing that he owns one of the cleanest Sciroccos anywhere.
