In aerodynamics, wing loading is the loaded weight of the aircraft divided by the area of the wing. The faster an aircraft flies, the more lift is produced by each unit of wing area, so a smaller wing can carry the same weight in level flight, operating at a higher wing loading. Correspondingly, the landing and takeoff speeds will be higher. The high wing loading also decreases maneuverability. The same constraints apply to winged biological organisms.
The table, which shows wing loadings, is intended to give an idea of the range of wing loadings used by aircraft. Maximum weights have been used. There will be variations amongst variants of any particular type. The dates are approximate, indicating period of introduction.
The upper critical limit for bird flight is about 5 lb/ft2 (25 kg/m2). An analysis of bird flight which looked at 138 species ranging in mass from 10 g to 10 kg, from small passerines to swans and cranes found wing loadings from about 1 to 20 kg/m2. The wing loadings of some of the lightest aircraft fall comfortably within this range. One typical hang glider (see table) has a maximum wing loading of 6.3 kg/m2, and an ultralight rigid glider 8.3 kg/m2.
A wing is a type of fin with a surface that produces aerodynamic forces facilitating movement through air and other gases, or water and other liquids. As such, wings have an airfoil shape, a streamlined cross-sectional shape producing lift.
The word "wing" from the Old Norse vængr for many centuries referred mainly to the foremost limbs of birds (in addition to the architectural aisle.) But in recent centuries the word's meaning has extended to include lift producing appendages of insects, bats, pterosaurs, boomerangs, some sail boats and aircraft, or the inverted airfoil on a race car that generates a downward force to increase traction.
Various species of penguins and other flighted or flightless water birds such as auks, cormorants, guillemots, shearwaters, eider and scoter ducks and diving petrels are avid swimmers, and use their wings to propel through water.
A wing's aerodynamic quality is expressed as its lift-to-drag ratio. The lift a wing generates at a given speed and angle of attack can be one to two orders of magnitude greater than the total drag on the wing. A high lift-to-drag ratio requires a significantly smaller thrust to propel the wings through the air at sufficient lift.
This video series is an attempt to explain facets of aircraft performance and aerodynamics in as simple of a fashion as possible. It is not meant as a comprehensive scientific accounting of said facets, since I am not an aeronautics expert, just an aviation enthusiast, so watch it with this in mind. All numbers except the actual wing loading, wing area and mass of each example aircraft are arbitrary Tell me what you think about this type of video, and if you like it, I'll keep 'em coming! Music is from Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, more specifically the first few briefings, called Briefing I.

On this episode of MyGeekShow I tested different amounts of wing loading on my GeekStar. I added extra weight to the airplane in 2oz increments until I got to 12oz added weight, when it became much harder to maintain safe control of the airplane.

The first successful test flight of the Wing Load Research with an extremely high loading of 7,4 kg/m2 ! The 12.5m2 is super fast with very short brakes. Works well for Infinity but very difficult to handle the rest of the maneuvers, especially stalls and helicos. Trimm speed between 48-50 km/h ! Follow at: www.facebook.com/takats.pal www.justacro.com
This video is the first in a study on wing loading and carbon reinforcement. This is a prototyped based on the RCPowers Mig-29v4. It was built for speed. "A-Frame" carbon reinforcements on the wing. KF4s and glassing on the leading edges. Stay tuned for more testing. I'll do better with camera angle next time.

Here's a few landings on a 5.5m² wing. My previous video was a 6m² wing, and I hope to land a 5m² soon. For the best flying performance and aerobatic ability for terrain flying I prefer a 10m² wing in this game as seen in my first video. Once you go below 10m² you lose a lot of recovery ability after low altitude barrel rolls and generally don't have many line options as you are so ground hungry you can't play with terrain much as you need to keep your airspeed high for a proper flare. This is the smallest wing I have landed yet, it's 6m2 (area) and I am loading it 4.0 oz/ft2. I have been busy and not playing much since my first video but just put this together in about an hour of tinkering and trying to land the smallest wing I could. Took a lot of trial and error, hope you enjoy it. The 8th Fighter Wing held a weapons loading competition, and there's a lot more to it than just speed. Staff Sergeant Joseph Park has the story.

On this episode of “Watching the Hawks” Tyrel Ventura, Tabetha Wallace, & Sean Stone take a look back at the 13th year since the beginning of the war in Iraq. The Marines are now sending troops into Iraq after one was killed by ISIS recently. Simone Del Rosario has the latest. Jen Senko, creator of the film “The Brainwashing of my Dad” joins us from NYC to talk about the right wing media takeover of the political discourse in this country. Tabetha Wallace gives us the latest one minute political rundown. This technology engineering aviation documentary is structured to explain the United States built North American X-15, a hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft operated by the USAF and NASA as part of the X-plane series of experimental aircraft. The aeronautical company known as North American designed and build this amazing aircraft which set speed and altitude records in the 1960s, reaching the edge of outer space and returning with valuable data used in aircraft and spacecraft design. As of September 2015, the X-15 holds the official world record for the highest speed ever reached by a manned, powered aircraft. Its maximum speed was 4,520 miles per hour (7,274 km/h), or Mach 6.72. The series formed the programming backbone for the Discovery Wings channel in the United States and United Kingdom, which launched in 1999. Discovery Wings was rebranded into the Military Channel in 2005 and Discovery Turbo in 2007, respectively. Some episodes are available on VHS via Ebay and Amazon. "Great Planes" episodes are available on DVD in Australia through Magna Pacific. "Great Planes" was also revived in a modernized format, hosted by Paul "Max" Moga, that aired on the Military Channel in the United States. Luke Swann died on 6 October 2000 after a brief battle with liver cancer. He is survived by his two daughters, Emily and Madeleine, and son Jack.
