Nels Courtney Cline (born January 4, 1956 in Los Angeles) is an American guitarist and composer.
He first came to prominence in the 1980s playing jazz, often in collaboration with his identical twin brother Alex Cline, a drummer. Since then, Nels has worked with a wide range of musicians in punk and alternative rock, notably Mike Watt, Thurston Moore and Wilco (the latter as a full-time member since 2004). He also leads the groups the Nels Cline Singers and Nels Cline Trio.
Cline was named the 82nd greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in November 2011,.
Cline began to play guitar at age 12 when his twin brother, Alex Cline took up the drums. The pair developed musically together, playing in a youth rock band they dubbed "Homogenized Goo" and both graduated from University High School (Los Angeles, California). He cites hearing a recording of Jimi Hendrix performing Manic Depression as a defining moment in his decision to become a guitarist.
Cline is known for his improvisational work and for the diversity of his musical projects, as well as his use of effects pedals and looping devices which give his music a distinct sound. He has played with jazz musicians Charlie Haden, Gregg Bendian, Wadada Leo Smith, Tim Berne, Vinny Golia, Julius Hemphill and the late bassist Eric Von Essen, a longtime musical companion in the L.A. jazz group Quartet Music.

The Nels Cline Singers are an American free jazz trio led by Nels Cline, following his work in the Nels Cline Trio. They have released five albums on Cryptogramophone Records. Despite the name, there are no singers in the group.
The Fretboard Journal is a keepsake magazine for guitar, mandolin, and stringed instrument players. In the same vein of other "coffee table magazines" such as Gastronomica, The Surfer's Journal, and the Rodder's Journal, it boasts high-end production values, lengthy interviews and exclusive photography in each issue. Each issue is filled with photos of rare instruments, well-known musicians, and even the workshops of instrument builders. The magazine is also available on the iPad.
The Fretboard Journal was founded by Michael Simmons, a veteran of musical instrument retail sales, and Jason Verlinde, a longtime music journalist. It is published out of Seattle, Washington. Years before, they collaborated on the Ukulele Occasional magazine, a small zine devoted to the four string instrument.
The first issue of the Fretboard Journal was unveiled in November 2005. Stories included an interview with mandolinist David Grisman, an interview with Charlie Louvin by Neko Case, and a profile of Santa Cruz Guitar Company. The second issue featured Case on the cover discussing tenor guitars, an article about Martin Guitars', history and an interview with mandolinist Andy Statman. Issues now come out every three months.

In conjunction with the Fretboard Journal #28's essay on the magic of the Fender Jazzmaster, we asked Wilco's Nels Cline to do a quick video demonstration of why he loves his 1960 JM so much. Here, on the stage of Seattle's Paramount Theater before a Wilco gig, he shows us the wide range of tones he's able to get from his instrument. Fender fans should also note the Fretboard Journal #28 issue also sports an interview with one of the Jazzmaster's earliest practitioners, George Tomsco of the Fireballs. Nels Cline, the preposterously skillful and adaptable guitarist's guitarist, is known mostly for his nasty solos with Wilco. But he's also part of the underground rock and free-jazz scenes, in which he's made challenging and expressive music with countless musicians, including those in The Nels Cline Singers. Cline's short set in the NPR Music offices serves as a rare and intimate master class from a thoughtful musician. The first interview featured Jim Campilongo - Master of the Fender Telecaster. Video by Karina Rykman. About Nels Cline: A true guitar polymath, Nels Cline has tackled everything from gothic country rock with the Geraldine Fibbers to a full remake of John Coltrane's late improvisational masterwork, Interstellar Space. He's best known, of course, as Wilco's gangly guitar hero, lurching into extended seizures ("Spiders [Kidsmoke]") or spiraling into lyrical jam flights ("Impossible Germany"). "Nels can play anything," Jeff Tweedy said. "We struggle with his spot in the band sometimes -- but we always come to a place that's unique and interest...
