South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
South is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. It is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. South is the polar opposite of north and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word south comes from Old English sūþ, from earlier Proto-Germanic *sunþaz ("south"), possibly related to the same Proto-Indo-European root that the word sun derived from.
By convention, the bottom side of a map is south, although reversed maps exist that defy this convention. To go south using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 180°. Alternatively, in the Northern Hemisphere outside the tropics, the Sun will be roughly in the south at midday.
True south is the direction towards the southern end of the axis about which the earth rotates, called the South Pole. The South Pole is located in Antarctica. Magnetic south is the direction towards the south magnetic pole, some distance away from the south geographic pole.
Roald Amundsen, from Norway, was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911, after Ernest Shackleton from the UK was forced to turn back some distance short.
African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans or Afro-Americans) are an ethnic group of Americans (citizens or residents of the United States) with total or partial ancestry from any of the Black racial groups of Africa. The term may also be used to include only those individuals who are descended from enslaved Africans. As a compound adjective the term is usually hyphenated as African-American.
African Americans constitute the third largest racial and ethnic group in the United States (after White Americans and Hispanic and Latino Americans). Most African Americans are of West and Central African descent and are descendants of enslaved blacks within the boundaries of the present United States. On average, African Americans are of 78 percent West African, 19 percent European and 3 percent Native American heritage, with very large variation between individuals. Immigrants from some African, Caribbean, Central American, and South American nations and their descendants may or may not also self-identify with the term.
Trevor Noah (born 20 February 1984) is a South African comedian, television and radio host, and actor. He is the host of American news satire television program The Daily Show, succeeding Jon Stewart.
Noah was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. His mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, is of mixed Xhosa and Jewish ancestry, and his father, Robert, is white and of Swiss German ethnicity. Noah spent his early youth in the private school of Maryvale College, a Catholic school in Johannesburg. His parents' relationship was illegal at the time of his birth because of apartheid. His mother was jailed and fined by the South African government, and his father later moved back to Switzerland. Noah was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother, Nomalizo Frances Noah. During his childhood, he attended church every Sunday.
Noah has two younger half-brothers by his mother's husband, Ngisaveni Shingange, whom she later divorced. In 2009, after she became engaged to another man, Shingange shot her in the back and face; he was unable to continue shooting as the gun jammed. He later threatened to kill Trevor Noah, forcing him to leave Johannesburg for Los Angeles. In 2011, Shingange was convicted of attempted murder. Noah stated that he hoped the attention surrounding the incident would help the domestic abuse problem in South Africa: "For years my mother reached out to police for help with domestic abuse, and nothing was ever done. This is the norm in South Africa. Dockets went missing and cases never went to court." In 2012, Shingange was sentenced to three years of correctional supervision for the attempted murder.
Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent. At about 30.2 million km2 (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers six percent of Earth's total surface area and 20.4 percent of its total land area. With 1.1 billion people as of 2013, it accounts for about 15% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagos. It contains 54 fully recognized sovereign states (countries), nine territories and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition.
Africa's population is the youngest amongst all the continents; the median age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4.Algeria is Africa's largest country by area, and Nigeria by population. Africa, particularly central Eastern Africa, is widely accepted as the place of origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago, including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.

When the world looked to South Africa for the World Cup in the summer of 2010, the filmmakers of this moving documentary explored the shocking levels of child rape and sexual abuse. In a country where a child is raped every three minutes, and where AIDS continues to spread with epidemic ferocity, we follow four girls aged 11-13 as they struggle to come to terms with the crimes committed against them and fight the social stigma that comes with the abuse. - One in four men in South Africa admit they have raped - A girl born in South Africa has a one in three chance of completing secondary education, and a one in four chance of being raped - Around 200,000 children a year are raped in South Africa - 62% of South African secondary schoolboys believe forcing someone to have sex is not an ac...

Afrian Skies 2 features the beautiful African Landscapes and their inhabitants. We did it again! But this time we wanted more! We traveled 6 Weeks through the most beautiful Landscapes of Namibia, Botswana and South Africa and shot literally every night - and day. We produced nearly 4 Terabytes of RAW data, shooting with 4 Cameras and I spent half a year of editing - this exceeded the limits of African Skies 1 by far. I edited the whole film in 4K. The video Sequences, shot with the Nikon D800 and D7100 had to be upscaled a bit (still no reasonable 4K Film-Camera available..) - the Time Lapse sequences, shot mostly with the Nikon D600, were downscaled from 6K. The whole editing and grading (video and time lapse) was done with LRTimelapse and Adobe Lightroom and then only cut in Premiere...
In the heart of the African bush, time-lapse photographers Drew Geraci and Andrew Breese, trek across the golden landscape to capture a single tree, the Acacia. The mission of this trip was to showcase the Acacia in as many different environmental compositions as possible (within a 3 day window). This footage is part behind-the-scenes and actual production shots that will be used in PBS's 'Nature' as a new show introduction. Our journey started with an 18 hour plane ride to Johannesburg, South Africa, and continued with a 6 hour drive to Pongola, where we arrived at a private game reserve (Kwazulu). The clock was ticking for us to find the 'perfect' tree so we set out at early dawn to scout and snap a few time-lapse shots in the process. We were greeted by all types of animals; lions, ze...

Travel video about destination South-Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered there, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa’s tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city’s narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa’s most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city’s past surface mining that gave rise to the country’s massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. South Africa, a land of wonder and excitement; a place where you can walk amongst lions or ride a top great elephants – it truly is a land of adventure! Although there are endless activities that you can partake in, before embarking on a journey to this beautiful country, there are a few things to know to prepare you for the trip. Here are my top 5 tips on what to do in South Africa! 1) BE SAFE! Do not walk around at night. The crime rate in Cape Town is actually quite high so avoid putting yourself in compromising situations. In addition, if you’re a woman, this is incredibly important because the sexual assault and rape rates are also high so keep that in mind. Be safe. 2) GO ON A SAFARI! Do not leave South Africa without going on some kind of game drive/safari where you’ll get the ch...

In Fall of 2009, I hunted black wildebeest in Africa in order to again "meet my meat." My wonderful guide was Chris Bolton, of Zungah Safaris, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After the hunt, we transported the meat to a well-known Cape Town Chef, Pete Goff, of The Kitchen Cowboys. This was a very emotional experience for me and my friend, Sonja Kroop, who was shooting most of the footage. We had not anticipated the hunt nor filming, when we arrived to visit a friend in Cape Town, so the footage quality is old mini-dv, not high quality HD. Some viewers may find this to be GRAPHIC CONTENT, as it shows the killing of an animal for food.

This is the fourth video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We interview Jennifer Aston, from WHL (http://www.southafricahotel-link.com/) and ask her how she views the position of responsible tourism in South Africa, and any practical tips she can provide to help people to reduce their negative impact. We then meet with a local friend and tour guide (Siviwe Mbinda) for walking tour around Langa - the first black township in Cape Town. I traveled to Kruger National Park, South Africa with the Board of Directors & Scientists from the Palm Beach Zoo, FL. In this video clip, Frankie, our guide from Tinga Lodge, leads us on an early morning (6 am) game drive. We had the unexpected pleasure to encounter LIONS! We chose to travel to South Africa in the middle of winter (which was freezing for us South Floridians) but best for viewing wildlife due to the lack of foliage. This was a science mission since the Palm Beach Zoo seeks to expand it's African wildlife collection. National Geographic has spoiled all of us with never before scenes of wildlife encounters with photographers camped out in the wild for weeks or months. We were giddy with exhilaration just to be in Africa and get ANY encounters! Driving through the Afri...

Human beings don’t always make rational decisions. But making irrational decisions is precisely what makes us human. These decisions, based on an impulse or a feeling, often lead us to those perfect moments when it feels great to be alive. "The Beauty of the Irrational" follows Ryan Sandes, a South African Ultra-Runner, as he returns to the Fish River Canyon to run the 5 day, 84km, Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail in the fastest time possible. On the last couple of years I had the opportunity to travel and meet some amazing places throughout the world. As always, I took what I consider to be an essential item on my journeys - my camera. This past December (2014) I embarked to the African continent, more precisely to South Africa. During two weeks I traveled through it´s Western and Northern Capes which were trips with amazing landscapes. I wish the trip lasted longer, but from the footage I collected I was able to mount this edit in order to show you a bit of my journey in South Africa. As always, i hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed doing it. for photos of the trip - instagram.com/flaviomanuel Shot with Canon 550D and Iphone 5 Much love, Flávio Official Selection of COLOR International Film Festival of India 201...
