Ali and Nino

Ali and Nino is a novel about a romance between a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and Christian Georgian girl in Baku in the years 1918-1920. It explores the dilemmas created by "European" rule over an "Oriental" society and presents a tableau portrait of Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, during the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic period that preceded the long era of Soviet rule. It was published under the pseudonym Kurban Said. The novel has been published in more than 30 languages, with more than 100 editions or reprints. The book was first published in Vienna in German in 1937, by E.P. Tal Verlag. It is widely regarded as a literary masterpiece and since its rediscovery and global circulation, which began in 1970, it is commonly considered the national novel of Azerbaijan.

Kurban Said

Kurban Said (pronounced kur-BAHN sa-EED), is the pseudonym for the author of Ali and Nino, a novel originally published in 1937 in the German language by the Austrian publisher, E.P. Tal. The novel currently has been published in more than 30 languages. The true identity of the author who wrote as Kurban Said is in dispute.

Meaning of the pseudonym "Kurban Said"

In Azerbaijan where the novel "Ali and Nino" has its setting, "Kurban" is pronounced "Gurban." The root of the word originates in Semitic languages—Arabic and Hebrew. The term connotes "sacrifice"—a traditional religious concept common to Middle Eastern cultures. "Said" means "joyful" or "fortunate."

However, in Turkic languages such as Azerbaijani, adjectives precede the nouns they modify, so the names would need to be reversed as "Said Kurban" to accurately convey the meaning "joyful sacrifice," or "fortunate sacrifice." This idea contradicts the storyline in the novel, which is anything but happy. A sad underlying melancholic theme pervades the novel from beginning to end.

Adam Bakri is an actor best known for playing lead role in Hany Abu-Assad's film Omar which made the 86th Academy Awards's shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film.

Adam Bakri comes from a cinematic family; he is the son of Mohammad Bakri, brother of Saleh Bakri and Ziad Bakri. After completing a bachelor's degree in English Literature and Theater Arts at Tel Aviv University, Bakri trained at New York's Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Shortly after his graduation, he landed the lead role in Hany Abu-Assad's drama thriller, Omar.

Dario Marianelli (born June 21, 1963) is an Italian composer of piano, orchestral, and film music.

Career

Marianelli was born in Pisa, a Tuscany's town, in Italy. Graduated from the National Film and Television School in England. He has composed the soundtracks for The Brothers Grimm (2005), Pride & Prejudice (2005), Atonement (2007), and Anna Karenina (2012), the last three for which he received Oscar nominations for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score. In 2008, Marianelli won both an Oscar and Golden Globe for the score of Atonement.

Marianelli has collaborated with director Joe Wright four times, on Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, The Soloist, and Anna Karenina.
