A tinsmith, sometimes known as a whitesmith, tinner, tinker, tinman, or tinplate worker, is a person who makes and repairs things made of tinware. By extension it can also refer to the person who deals in tinware.
A whitesmith may work with tin, pewter, or other materials. Unlike blacksmiths (who work mostly with hot metal), tinsmiths do the majority of their work on cold metal (although they might use a hearth to heat and help shape their raw materials). The term is also applied to metalworkers who do only finishing work – such as filing or polishing – on iron and other "black" metals. Whitesmiths fabricate items such as tin or pewter cups, water pitchers, forks, spoons, and candle holders and it was a common occupation in pre-industrial times.
The tinsmith, or white smith, learned his trade, like many other artisans, by serving an apprenticeship of 4 to 6 years with a master tinsmith. He learned first to make cake stamps (cookie cutters), pill boxes and other simple items. Next, he formed objects such as milk pails, basins, cake and pie pans. Later he tackled more complicated pieces such as chandeliers and crooked-spout coffee pots.
Colonial Williamsburg is a living-history museum and private foundation presenting part of a historic district in the city of Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. Colonial Williamsburg's 301-acre (122 ha) Historic Area includes buildings from the eighteenth century (during part of which the city was the capital of Colonial Virginia), as well as 17th-century, 19th-century, Colonial Revival structures and more recent reconstructions. The Historic Area is an interpretation of a colonial American city, with exhibits of dozens of restored or re-created buildings related to its colonial and American Revolutionary War history.
In the late 1920s, the restoration and re-creation of colonial Williamsburg was championed by the Reverend Dr. W. A. R. Goodwin, other community leaders, such organizations as the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (now called Preservation Virginia), the Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Chamber of Commerce as well as the scion of the Rockefeller family, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and his wife, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, to celebrate rebel patriots and the early history of the United States.

Born in 1916, in the Shunde district of Guangdong province, Mak Sing-yin was about 18 years old when he followed the path of relatives, who roamed south running away from the Japanese occupation. Mak learned to craft tin for three years in kowloon, before moving to Sai Kung in the early 1950s. Tinsmith John McGuire makes a barn lantern from early Ontario. John started tinsmithing at age 17 and went on to work for the De Havilland Aircraft Company Limited which is now part of BAE Systems plc, the British aerospace and defence business. So John knows his stuff. Now, in his retirement, he offers his knowledge of tin, history, and other bits of random knowledge to the public at Black Creek. We filmed Davey Collins in Finglas in 2001 making this pot in the traditional way. What a pleasure it was to see him at work, he was a master of this craft, and a gentleman. The resulting short film was one of a series of 32 films we produced or TG4 and the arts Council, on the subject of artists and makers from around Ireland. This film shows the entire process from beginning to end.

In this video, we make cookie cutters with the Tinsmith, John. During the 1860's many towns and villages had a resident Tinsmith who crafted items for the home and farm. The Tinsmith Shop at Black Creek Pioneer Village used to be a hardware store on the main floor, while the second storey was the first home of the Masonic Lodge known as the Blackwood Lodge. Did you know there's a city in Virginia that has a complete (and functional) 18th century town inside of it? It's called Colonial Williamsburg, and it's awesome! Married to the road
There's no other way to say it.
Baby found out
Quite early in the game.
If I belong to my songs
She chose not to play it.
Now I walk down the street
And I hear them call my name.
Chorus:
Tunesmith, tunesmith
Sing me a song.
Give me your laughter
Give me your tears.
Tunesmith, tunesmith
Sing me a song.
But who sings a song for the tunesmith?
Who sings a song for the tunesmith?
She could have changed my mind
If anyone could do it
That's why I know
I'll always be this way.
And now I've got fame
I find there's nothing to it.
I remember how I loved her
When I hear the people say.
Repeat chorus
This hotel room is all I own
Now that all my friends are gone.
All alone at the break of day
I can still hear them say.
