The baffling case of a kayak found empty in Port Phillip Bay hasn't yet been solved with a search suspended until more information comes to light, police say.
The kayak was found anchored and partially submerged about 150 metres from Sandridge Beach, Port Melbourne, about 5.20pm on Easter Sunday.
Police feared its kayaker could have fallen into the water so the discovery prompted a mass search by the water police and involved a helicopter, search and rescue divers, the coast guard and SES volunteers.
But on Monday afternoon the search party had not located its owner, meaning authorities aren't sure if anyone has fallen in or if it had been moored.
Police said the search will be suspended until "more information comes to light".
They have released images of the camouflage-printed kayak in the hope someone recognises it and can help identify its owner.
Anyone who saw the kayak on Sunday or has any information relating to its owner is urged to contact Water Police on (03) 9399 7500 or Triple 0.
