A reinvigorated AIATSIS

We’ve been busy over the holiday period preparing to launch a refreshed AIATSIS brand and website.

This reinvigoration follows our highly successful 50th anniversary campaign and the new website will combine both the 50th and existing AIATSIS websites.

The new site will be the place for people from all corners of the world to learn about the richness and diversity of Indigenous Australia and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ contributions to the shaping of our nation.

We’ve been writing, testing and consulting with people from Melbourne to Cairns and everywhere in between to ensure our website meets your needs. We’re looking forward to hearing what you think!

We aim to launch both very soon so more to come...

The date coincides with the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival, held in Laura QLD the weekend following the conference, providing delegates the opportunity to be involved in the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural gatherings in Australia.

Virginia Marshall
Web of Aboriginal water rights

Where do Aboriginal needs and interests stand in the complex and fiercely contested area of water rights in Australia?

Dr Virginia Marshall will explore the way Aboriginal people value and conceptualise water and show how ineffective policies and legislative regimes have either marginalised Aboriginal water rights or ignored them completely in this occasional seminar on Wednesday 25 February.

Greatest pride helping build the AIATSIS collection

A film archivist and researcher from Tuncurry has been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia Medal (AM) for her work preserving Indigenous heritage, through TV and radio. Wendy Borchers mainly worked with the ABC in her 40-year career, including the early days of programs like 'This Day Tonight'.

But Ms Borchers said she takes greatest pride in her work collecting rare historical film and sound for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.
