The Stafford Papers

 

Alfred ‘Alf’ George Stafford was the personal driver to no less than 11 Australian Prime Ministers, was close personal friend and confidant to Sir Robert Menzies and lived at the Lodge!

His granddaughter Michelle recently gifted Alf’s personal collection of memorabilia to the Institute for safekeeping.

National Press Club Address

Mayi Kuwayu study


Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been saying for a long time that culture affects overall wellbeing. Mayi Kuwayu will provide the data to measure this.

This longitudinal study, led by AIATSIS researcher Dr Ray Lovett,  will examine how improvements in wellbeing are linked to things like connection to country, cultural practices, ritual, spirituality and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language use.

Dawn on ABC TV


ABC TV's 7.30 ACT paid a visit to the AIATSIS Library recently for a quick tour and to learn about Dawn magazine.

Dawn and New Dawn magazine are a great resource for family history research in NSW and are available through our online collection.

In the native title ‘hot tub’


The first title in the series Native Title Issues Papers Volume 6 is now available.

In this edition, authors Vance Hughston SC and Tina Jowett explore the increasing use of expert conferences and concurrent expert evidence in native title proceedings.

Mervyn Meggitt Collection


This free public exhibition is on now in the AIATSIS ROM Gallery. It features a selection of stunning photographs by noted anthropologist Professor Mervyn Meggitt, taken whilst doing research with the Warlpiri people between 1953 and 1954 in the Hooker Creek (now Lajamanu) area of the Northern Territory.

ASP is Melbourne Dreaming


The ASP team are really pleased with the way the second edition of Melbourne Dreaming is being received by media.

They’re anticipating reviews in a wide range of magazines and newspapers, and the author’s Melbourne Writers’ Festival guided walks were very popular. ASP is currently working on a phone app for the new edition, so watch this space!

Message From Mungo


AIATSIS member Historian Professor Anne McGrath is the co-director and co-producer of this compelling documentary film that comprehensively tells the story of Mungo.

AIATSIS’ members work also features in the film including a particular archaeological find by Professor Bowler.
