Mercedes-AMG is set to bolster its range with a high-performance inline six-cylinder engine likely to be offered in the new E-Class coupe and upcoming four-door GT4 sedan.
Speaking with journalists at the New York motor show in April, Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers confirmed his team is working on a more powerful variant of Mercedes' upcoming inline six.
The engine could be used in an AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe which will not be offered with V8 power.

The E50 specification, as it will be dubbed, will feature 48-volt electrical architecture compatible with state-of-the art electric turbocharger and next-gen hybrid systems Mercedes-AMG has been researching.
Moers says AMG is investing in electrification as "the future of performance", as hybrid variants of performance cars could offer additional driving range, superior fuel economy and improved performance while meeting increasingly strict emissions laws.
Mercedes-AMG is rumoured to be working on an E50 AMG coupe and convertible likely to offer well more than 300kW of power in a smooth and efficient package.
Acknowledging that the E50 is something "we could do", Moers also says the new engine is a possibility for a four-door version of the Mercedes-AMG GT sedan, though it won't be available in the two-door GT coupe or convertible as it does not fit under the sports car's svelte bonnet.

Nice. Prefer a straight 6 over a v6 any day of the week.
