The political and legal status of Taiwan (or the Taiwan Issue, Mainland Issue or Taiwan Strait Issue as referred to by the Republic of China) hinges on whether Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu should remain effectively independent as territory of the Republic of China (ROC); become unified with the territories now governed by the People's Republic of China (PRC); formally declare independence and become the Republic of Taiwan; as well as whether the existence and legal status as a state ("country") of both the ROC and the PRC is legitimate as a matter of international law, and how much diplomatic recognition either entity receives from the international community.
Currently, Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and some other minor islands effectively make up the jurisdiction of the state with the official name of Republic of China but widely known as Taiwan. The ROC, which took control of Taiwan (including Penghu and other nearby islands) in 1945, ruled mainland China and claimed sovereignty over Outer Mongolia (now Mongolia) and Tannu Uriankhai (part of which is present day Tuva, Russia) before losing the Chinese Civil War and relocating its government to Taipei, Taiwan in December 1949. On September 1951, Japan officially renounced its right to Taiwan in the Treaty of San Francisco without explicitly stating the sovereignty status of Taiwan, and hence some supporters of Taiwanese independence argue that the sovereignty of Taiwan is still held by the Allies.
Cross-Strait relations (simplified Chinese: 海峡两岸关系; traditional Chinese: 海峽兩岸關係; pinyin: Hǎixiá liǎng'àn guānxì) are the relations between mainland China and Taiwan, which are separated by the Taiwan Strait in the west Pacific Ocean, and in particular between their respective governments:
In 1949, with the Chinese Civil War turning decisively in the Communists' (CPC) favour, the ROC government led by the Kuomintang (KMT) retreated to Taipei, in Taiwan, while the CPC proclaimed the PRC government in Beijing.
Since then, the relations between China and Taiwan have been characterized by limited contact, tensions, and instability. In the early years, military conflicts continued, while diplomatically both governments competed to be the "legitimate government of China". More recently, questions around the political and legal status of Taiwan have focused on the alternative prospects of political unification with China or full Taiwanese independence. The People's Republic remains hostile to any formal declaration of independence and maintains its claim over Taiwan. At the same time, non-governmental and semi-governmental exchanges between the two sides have been increasing. From 2008, negotiations began to restore the "three links" (transportation, commerce, and communications) between the two sides, cut off since 1949. Party-to-party talks between the CPC and the KMT have resumed and semi-official negotiations through organizations representing the interests of their respective governments are being scheduled.

Taiwan (i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 臺灣 or 台灣; see below), officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands, following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War. This remaining area is also constitutionally called the "Free area of the Republic of China" which is not ruled by the Communist Party of China in Beijing.
Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west (mainland China), Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 649 people per km2 in October 2015.Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.

To call a city 'the best food city in the world' is kind if ridiculous. After all, food is subjective. But I've traveled a lot over the past 30 years, and I can honestly say that Taipei has been my favorite food city. It has a diversity that is somewhat rare in Asia. The Chinese food there is extremely good, no matter what part of China it's from. Taiwanese food is most often a take on an already delicious dish. We feasted for 7 days and loved every bite. Join us as we explore Taiwan's food culture. Dutch navigator Abel Tasman was the first European to encounter the Maori. Four members of his crew were killed in a bloody encounter in 1642. In 1769 British explorer James Cook established friendly relations with some Maori. By 1800, visits by European ships were relatively frequent. At this time, war and disease took their toll on the Maori till eventually their population dropped to about 100,000. In 1840 representatives of Britain and Maori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi. This treaty established British rule, granted the Maori British citizenship, and recognized Maori land rights. Today many of the treaty's provisions are disputed and there ahs been and is an effort from the New Zealand Government to recompense Maori for some land that was illegally confiscated. Ma...
I went to Taïwan mostly to visit some friends living there. Quite unknown, this country would deserve to be more. The proper and justifiable country to pay homage to the Cyberpunk genre would definitely be Japan. Though I really doubt I would be visiting Japan again anytime soon and exploiting this genre was on the 'to do list'. Taiwan on the other hand has her fair share of neon lights, dark motifs and loud colours. Accompanied by a virtual theme prevalent in the cities' urbanization, Taiwan to me felt like a pre-modernized Japan. Walking in Keelung (Taipei) felt like stepping into a scene from Spirited Away (Miyazaki). This fact also goes in tandem with Taiwan's less polished culture which might have resulted in it's people being more endearing and affectionate. Despite it's extremely erratic weather, Taiwan was a pleasure. Great people, great conversations, great night-life and most importantly gr...
Destination Taiwan! Taiwan is a friendly, beautiful surprising island. My exploration of Taiwan by Parkour was one of the biggest experiences in my life. There are various ways to discover the beauty of Taiwan’s landscape, culture and people : Trekking in the magnificent cliffs at Taroko Gorges; taking a ride on the Alishan Forest Railway and experiencing the breathtaking sunrise and sea of clouds; cruising at Sun Moon Lake; taking MRT inTaiwan’s capital city Taipei, eating with locals in night markets... Trailer for an exploration of Taiwan's rich bboy scene, and as it fits in the island-nation's hip hop culture as a whole. This project will span at least 2 years as we're only in Taiwan one month out of the year. For four hours on February 12th, 2013, OG Taiwan bboy, and a member of the international hip hop crew, The Mighty Zulu Kingz, Bboy Choco took me on a tour of just one area of Taipei: the Ximending a.k.a. the West Gate Pedestrian Area. The area, packed with endless stores and food stands has a real night market feel, but is known throughout the country as THE place where young people congregate. It's where the flagship stores for the most popular youth, athletic, and urban brands are situated, and is, as I discovered, a pivotal place for the emergence of hip hop culture in Taiwan. ...

This is a departure for me of sorts, as I usually cover international music. The trip to Taiwan promised a great deal of culture and concerts, but Hurricane Soulik blew that second element away. Still, there is so much that is fascinating about Taiwan's culture that I knew I would come back with something of interest, so I just kept my camcorder rolling, and here is the result, and some written comments about it. One of the things that of course, makes Taiwan unique is that as my colleague Lucia points out in the video, it is over 90% Han Chinese. Yet even the hordes of tourists who come over from the Mainland these days will tell you that Taiwanese are somehow different. Yes, much of the culture is directly traceable to the mainland, but one must factor in the influence of the European p...
FEBRUARY 16, 2010, 12:00 PM (To see more of Michal's world music videos, visit http://inter-muse.com) This is the last installment on Taiwanese music, and it seems very fitting. On a chilly and rainy day I visited the mountaintop home of the Guqin Society, where after a bit of a steep climb, Yuan Jung-ping was waiting for me with hot tea and sweets. He proceeded to play a calming and lovely song about bidding goodbye at a station. The guqin (pronounced "chin"-- I HATE the Pinyin spellings!) is an instrument that may date to 4000 years ago. Playing it is as much about meditation as music. The song is from the 12th century, with Jung-ping's arrangement, and it is spare but beautiful. Like my first posting of Nanguan music, it rewards the person who really listens to it, bringing them into a ...
Tiny, circular “fishing floats,” attached to baited lines, bob on the water like wayward mini-beach balls. Plastic lawn chairs scrape against the concrete floor, as would-be fishermen shift and wait for the slightest tug. Tinny Mandarin music accompanies the bubbling of large water filters. But the most evocative sound reverberating through Taiwan’s catch-your-own shrimp bars is the sizzle of prawns on the grill. Heat from the gas-powered grills transforms tasty Grand Duke shrimp from bluish ochre to coral pink. No need to order off the menu here. Instead, a fisherman sits patiently by the pool, then brings his catch over to the cooking station once he’s decided there are enough of the plump crustaceans in his bag to make a meal. He declaws them after catching them; adds salt, soy sauce, ...

Welcome to another Shanghai Flyer Production, for those who already subscribed a warm welcome back ! :) This is a review of my connecting flight from New York. I was flying from Taipei to Shanghai on one of the Eva Air’s last three Boeing 747-400s. This ticket was booked together with my flight from New York and all together they cost me 75000 Avianca Miles each way with 60 USD of taxes. I was seated in 13A, I chose that seat since nobody was sitting next to me. The aircraft I was on is B-16410, delivered in 1998. The business class seat or Premium Laurel Class is ALL located on the main deck. The upper deck is filled with economy seats in a 3-3 configuration. The business Class seats are in a 2-2-2 in the main cabin and the forward cabin features 2-2 with a bar which is active during th...

Taiwan''s exports are expected to shrink this year, leading many to forecast economic growth of around 2 percent. While the government says poor economic data is mainly due to international conditions, some believe a more serious industrial transformation is taking place. This factory at the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park produces synthetic leather. Many of its long-term downstream customers have moved away from Taiwan, making business increasingly difficult.Chen Yung-nengXing He Industry GM At the outset, we shouldn’t encourage them to move but to instead upgrade their technology and production. The government hasn’t been very effective in cultivating this industry, so many middle and downstream companies have rushed to Southeast Asia or China to survive. Li Mou-dian Xing He Industry Ch...

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Our flight from Taipei to Narita Airport (Tokyo) was on ANA Airlines who was using the EVA Business Class Lounge today. A big perk when 1Ks fly Economy is the ability to use whatever Star Alliance Airline Lounge you are flying on that day. Although Economy Class on ANA, it was into the very luxurious EVA Lounge. So many different foods to choose from, lots of space and the usual Asian Business Lounge perks; showers, etc., etc. Why should we be surprised at that? A perfect ending to a fabulous vacation in Taiwan. I'll repeat: Don't wait as long as we did to visit Taiwan, filled with attractions, luxury - or not, clean and delicious food.
Welcome to another video of Shanghai Flyer ! For those who has subscribed a warm welcome back :) This video is a review of Eva Air's royal laurel class (business class). I've heard a lot of positive impression about this product so l decided to review it this time. I was flying from New York to Shanghai with a stopover in Taipei. My seat was 6A and I also ordered my main course on their website. The business class seat Eva use on their 77W are the prevailing reverse herringbone seats. Those seats are identical to the ones that China Eastern has. The soft product of this flight is amazing. From the impeccable service to the stunning food and beverage(Krug). Eva Air's Royal Laurel Class has definitely exceeded my expectation for a business class product. Although it was a midnight departure...
Contrary to my previous business class flight with China Airlines, on this flight the crew encouraged me to take as much video and pictures as I want and never mentioned anything about a "copyright violation" that the previous crew warned me about. The crew was absolutely phenomenal. Several crew members took time to speak with me during the flight. In particular, the purser encouraged me to give them tips for improvement. She told me that an airline must always be a step ahead of its competitors even if they are already ahead. On Sunday, October 25th, 2015 after visiting the Longshan Temple and the Tourist Night Market we drove around looking for a place where to have lunch, and a place where to park the car. As it was not possible find a single parking spot, we drove away from the centre to a Recreation Centre where David had a membership card. Very beautiful installation in gym, swimming pool and sauna and internet connection (high speed). There we had a Chinese lunch, drink a Taiwanese beer and a big cup of coffee. We learned then that Taipei City has a free Wi-Fi network “Taipei – free” where you can login after getting a user name and password.

Taipei City is the capital of Taiwan. Situated at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei is located on the Tamsui River; it is about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of Keelung, a port city on the Pacific Ocean. It lies in the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed bounded by the two relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border. The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a famous monument, landmark and tourist attraction that was erected in memory of General Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. The structure stands at the east end of Memorial Hall Square, site of the National Concert Hall and National Theater and their adjacent parks as well as the memorial. The landmarks of Liberty Square stand with...
The Taipei Pop Music Center features a gradient of mixed-use spaces, from the fully public realm to the interior of the auditorium, and allows the visitor to partake of the event dynamic however they choose to visit this complex. Whether they plan a night of music or are browsing the myriad shops, markets, cafes, and restaurants, the complex will be a 24-hour attraction independent of the schedule of performances in the theaters. The TPMC features a new elevated public ground, which bridges the two building sites presently divided by Xinsheng Rd. Corridor. The elevated public space is a pedestrian zone creating a coherent public space distinct yet connected to the life of the city, and effectively joining the three major zones of the complex, the Main Concert Hall, Outdoor Amphitheater, an...

Kaohsiung is a city worth checking out in South Taiwan. To get there from Taipei, just take the rapid rails and in a few hours, you'll be there. In Kaohsiung, I met up with local friends Maggie and Wennie who showed me around Kaohsiung's harbor area and Cijin Island. But first, before the ferry, we stopped by a shaved ice place that serves shaved ice by gigantic bowls. It was delicious and super sweet- perfect for a hot day in Taiwan. Next, we boarded a quick ferry to Cijin Island, where seafood restaurants line both sides. This was full of tourists, but rightfully so because the street food was also delicious. We ate some roasted fresh squid- the best I've ever had. Then we stopped and checked out some weird ginger sauce tomato dip dish that can only be found regionally. Overall, it was ...

A look at the complex political situation on the island of Taiwan. The island of Taiwan is administered by the Republic of China, which lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communists which control the mainland to this day, proclaiming the People's Republic of China in 1949. Both the ROC and the PRC claim to be the legitimate government of China. Taiwan is a de facto independent country but is not a member of the United Nations since being replaced in 1971 by the PRC. The current situation is stuck in a stalemate with the two ways of resolving the dispute (unification and independence) both seeming very unlikely to happen any time soon.
