The City and Borough of Juneau (/ˈdʒuːnoʊ/; Tlingit: Dzánti K'ihéeni [ˈtsántʰì kʼìˈhíːnì]) is the capital city of Alaska. It is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan panhandle, and it is the second largest city in the United States by area. Juneau has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of what was then the District of Alaska was moved from Sitka as dictated by the U.S. Congress in 1900. The municipality unified on July 1, 1970, when the city of Juneau merged with the city of Douglas and the surrounding Greater Juneau Borough to form the current municipality, which is larger by area than both Rhode Island and Delaware.

As of the 2010 census, the City and Borough had a population of 31,275. In 2014, the population estimate from the United States Census Bureau was 32,406, making it the second most populous city in Alaska after Anchorage.Fairbanks, however, is the second most populous metropolitan area in the state, with more than 99,000 residents. Juneau's daily population can increase by roughly 6,000 people from visiting cruise ships between the months of May and September.

The people we interviewed in Alaksa understand the relationship between people and nature. We met with a scientist from the non-profit Oceana, which is the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation, a 27 year old fisherwoman, who sustainably fishes and lives a life of self-suffiency, and the Co-Founder of the Alaskan Brewing Company, who is committed to exercising environmental stewardship in every aspect of her business. The company aims to have a zero-net negative effect upon the environment by reclaiming and reusing at least as much waste and emissions as they produce.

In Alaska, seafood is big business. Alaska produces more seafood than the other 49 United States combined. In fact, Alaska ranks as the twelfth largest seafood producing nation in the world. From the industrial fisheries of the Bering Sea...to the mom and pop operations on the Southeast troll grounds, commercial fishing is the economic glue that binds Alaska. This marine wealth that characterizes Alaska exists today despite more than a century of intense exploitation by fishing fleets from around the world. Alaska's bounty is a tribute to the reproductive vitality of the state's marine environment, and to the effectiveness of modern scientific resource management. It is proof positive that abundant resources and large-scale commercial fisheries are entirely compatible, at least in a realm...

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - When most people think of Alaska, they picture its thick forests, hulking grizzly bears and soaring, snow-covered peaks. What they might not imagine is rockets whisking defense and other payloads into space. But America's northernmost state has that too, entering the high-tech aerospace business more than 25 years ago as it looked to diversify its oil-reliant economy. The state-owned Alaska Aerospace Corp. hit a low point after a rocket exploded at its launch site in 2014 amid a deepening state deficit. The governor later gave it an ultimatum: Become self-sustaining or shut down. In this May 1, 2017 photo Craig Campbell, the chief executive officer of Alaska Aerospace Corporation, poses for a photo at his office in Anchorage

Towering cruise ships, sometimes four at a time, sit at port in Juneau at the peak of summer, delivering tourists important to the economy of this and other southeast Alaska communities. But some conservationists worry about what the ships could be leaving in Alaska waters and are fighting proposed new rules for the discharge of treated wastewater. The issue has come up before, pitting business interests against environmental concerns. Over the years, Alaska has rolled back provisions of a 2006 citizen initiative that called for cruise ship wastewater to meet water quality standards at the point of discharge. In 2013, for example, the Legislature struck that discharge requirement, saying instead that wastewater cannot be discharged in a way that violates applicable state or federal law. h...

St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church was built in 1893 in Juneau, Alaska. It is the second oldest surviving Russian Orthodox church in the state, and the only octagonal example. Although constructed twenty --six years after Secretary of State William H. Seward facilitated the US purchase of Alaska from Russia, the church can be seen as closely related to the period of Russian colonization (1741-1867). St. Nicholas Church was built soon after Juneau was founded (1880) and remains one of the oldest structures in the city. According to tradition, the construction of ST. Nicholas was a joint effort of local Tlingit Indians and Serbian miners. The documentation of St. Nicholas was the result of a collaboration between NPS Alaska Regional Office, ROSSIA Inc. JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Going without health insurance is a risk. Going without it in Alaska can be a gamble of a much higher order, for this is a place unlike anywhere else in the U.S., a land of pitiless cold, vast expanses and dangerous, back-breaking work such as pulling fishing nets from the water or hauling animal carcasses out of the woods. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2017-04-15-US--Health%20Overhaul-Alaska/id-e6b8181e768441d29def2f06cea62909 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

I was walking in the valley when someone calls me over. It's a friend, who in my darkest days helped bring me back to the light, and a woman. He hands her a $20 and she hands him back a small white crystal substance. I am enraged, because I've been trying to influence him to go straight & be a good member of the community. I ask him, "Whats that?" and he just clams up. That woman had a good amount of what looked like meth. I ask again, "What is that?" and she just gets defensive, saying to my friend, "I told you not to call that stupid asshole over here!" Now, I'm just walking away, but she's still insulting me! So, I hit record on my camera, and here it is, after everything I just told you. I'm not with law enforcement or the neighborhood watch, I'M JUST A PISSED OFF TAX PAYING AMERICAN, ...

Sometimes all your day needs is a little change of scenery, pace, and perspective. I've been dreaming up this idea to do a short skateboard segment featuring this beautiful area literally a stones throw from downtown Juneau, Alaska; but wanted to put a new spin on it. Local videographer and drone aficionado, Michael Hemingway helped me bring this idea to visual fruition with his DJI Mavic and I was so stoked on the resulting shots, that I got inspired to plug in my electric guitar and record an original score for the piece that same night. Been messing around with adding overlaid sound to my video projects as of late, and this project was no different. It's cool to see how the visceral experience of videos changes and comes to life when you add foley sounds to them. Thanks to Rainf...

University of Alaska President Jim Johnsen says the university system should have one school of education with its dean in Fairbanks, closing separate education administrations in Anchorage and Juneau. Johnsen announced the proposal Friday as part of the continuation of his Strategic Pathways, meant to eliminate duplication and focus on the strengths of each of the university's three main campuses while trimming the budget and increasing the number of graduates. The process has led to the proposed elimination of skiing and indoor track teams as well as the proposed elimination of the school of management at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. Business classes would still be offered at UAS in Juneau, just as faculty would still offer education programs and classes at the Universi...
