ACT Policing release latest crime statistics for January to March 2017

Reported cases of family violence have reduced in the first quarter of 2017 compared with the same period the previous year, but total numbers of crime have increased in the territory.

The latest statistics from ACT Policing for January 1 to March 31 this year show there were 11061 offences recorded across the ACT. This is up from the past two years. During the same period in 2016 there were 403 fewer offences recorded, and 427 fewer again recorded in 2015.

The area with the biggest increase in crime was the inner north. Reported offences increased by almost 400, from 2347 offences in the first quarter of 2016 to 2746 offences this year.

Weston Creek and the inner south recorded reduced numbers of offences; 175 and 156 fewer overall offences respectively.

There was a noticeable increase in the number of burglaries, theft and property damage recorded across Canberra in the first quarter of 2017 compared with the same period last year.

Traffic infringement notices decreased, while vehicle theft increased to the highest it has been in the past five years.

Assault also increased to the highest in the past five years, with 739 recorded across the city compared with 670 in the same period last year and 506 in the same period in 2015.

Homicide decreased, with one recorded in Tuggeranong this year while three were recorded last year.

Total number of family violence crimes, including incidences, offences and assaults decreased slightly, with 1625 recorded this year compared with 1694 the previous year.

In 2017, 165 domestic violence offenders have been apprehended, compared with 192 caught in the same period last year.
