Jaguar's F-Pace mid-size SUV has raced to the head of the pack.

The British car maker's debut SUV was voted the 2017 World Car of the Year, which is decided by 75 motoring journalists from 24 countries.

The F-Pace saw off some stiff competition, just pipping Drive's reigning Car of the Year, the Volkswagen Tiguan, and the second-generation Audi Q5 to the post.

On top of this the  F-Pace was also awarded the World Car Design award, with the SUV showcasing Jaguar's design pedigree.

Ian Callum, Jaguar's director of design, said, "The F-Pace is our first ever SUV but it is clearly recognisable as a Jaguar and for it to win the 2017 World Car of the Year trophy vindicates our decision to bring our unique design principles and dynamic qualities to a new sector of the market."

Meanwhile the Mercedes-Benz E-Class took out the best luxury car award and the Porsche Boxster/Cayman won World Performance Car of the Year. Both of which took out their respective categories at the 2016 Drive Car of the Year Awards.

The Green Car of the Year award was awarded to the plug-in version of the Toyota Prius which isn't available in Australia.
