It is Oldfield's most successful single to date, reaching number one on a number of charts around Europe.
The single peaked at number 4 in the British charts, making it Oldfield's second highest ranked single after "Portsmouth", which reached number 3 in 1976. "Moonlight Shadow" was successful throughout Europe. It reached number 1 in many countries, including Italy, Austria, Switzerland for four weeks and Norway for six weeks. It spent four weeks at number 2 in Germany, hit number 6 in Australia, and peaked at number 3 in New Zealand and France. "Moonlight Shadow" (ムーンライト・シャドウ) is an award-winning novella by Japanese author Banana Yoshimoto, partly inspired by Mike Oldfield's song with the same title. The novella is included in most editions of Yoshimoto's novel Kitchen.
The novella tells the story of a young woman, Satsuki, coming to terms with the death of her boyfriend, Hitoshi, in a car accident and her friendship with her boyfriend's brother, Hiiragi, whose girlfriend, Yumiko, also died in the same accident. With Japanese cultural and surrealistic themes, it is an example of Yoshimoto's clean writing style that portrays the emotions of grief, loss, and hope.
Many important symbols are brought up, including a bell. This bell is "what really sparked the relationship." Satsuki meets a mysterious woman who helps her overcome her boyfriend's death, and Satsuki continues wondering why the woman helped her after she overcomes Hitoshi's death.

(: Lyrics: The last that ever she saw him Carried away by a moonlight shadow He passed on worried and warning Carried away by a moonlight shadow. Lost in a riddle that saturday night Far away on the other side. He was caught in the middle of a desperate fight And she couldn't find how to push through The trees that whisper in the evening Carried away by a moonlight shadow Sing a song of sorrow and grieving Carried away by a moonlight shadow All she saw was a silhouette of a gun Far away on the other side. He was shot six times by a man on the run And she couldn't find how to push through I stay I pray I see you in heaven far away I stay I pray I see you in heaven one day Four a.m. in the morning Ca...

The Last That Ever She Saw Him
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
He Passed On Worried And Warning
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
Lost In A Riddle That Saturday Night
Far Away On The Other Side
He Was Caught In The Middle Of A Desperate Fight
And She Couldn't Find How To Push Through
The Trees That Whisper In The Evening
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
Sing A song Of Sorrow And Grieving
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
All She Saw Was The Silhouette Of A Gun
Far Away On The Other Side
He Was Shot Six Times By A Man On The Run
And She Couldn't Find How To Push Through
I Stay, I Pray
See You In Heaven Far Away
I Stay, I Pray
See You In Heaven One Day
Four A.M. In The Morning
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
I Watched Your Vision Falling
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
Stars Moved Slowly In The Silvery Night
Far Away On The Other Side
Will You Come To Talk To Me This Night
But She Couldn't Find How To Push Through
I Stay, I Pray ...
Far Away On The Other Side
Caught In The Middle Of A Hundred And Five
The Night Was Heavy And The Air Was Alive
But She Couldn't Find How To Push Through
I Stay, I Pray ...
The Last Time Ever She'd See Him
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
The Crowd Gather Just Beneath Him
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
Caught In The Middle Of A Hundred And Five
Far Away On The Other Side
The Night Was Heavy And The Air Was Alive
But She Couldn't Find How To Push Through
(Only on the extended version)
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow
Far Away On The Other Side
