In this video we have a look at Eli and Edythe Broad's new contemporary art museum in Los Angeles, The Broad. We attended the press preview to have a look at the Broad's collection, and especially at the architecture of the new building that was designed by the New York-based architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. We had the pleasure to talk to the architecture firms founding partner Elizabeth Diller, who provided us with some basic information on the concept of the museum's architecture with its “veil-and-vault” idea, the challenges the architecture studio faced, and how they worked with the natural light.
The Broad is a new contemporary art museum built by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The Broad is home to the nearly 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which comprises prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art and offers free general admission. With its innovative “veil-and-vault” concept, the 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building will feature two floors of gallery space to showcase The Broad’s comprehensive collection and will be the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. Based in New York City, Diller Scofidio + Renfro is led by three partners – Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, and Charles Renfro. Selected projects include: World Trade Center Viewing Platform, New York, NY (2001); Blur, Swiss Expo, Lake Neuchâtel (2002); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2006); The Broad, Los Angeles, CA (2015); Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Expansion, New York, NY (in design).

Museum of Arts and Design
The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), based in Manhattan, New York City, collects, displays, and interprets objects that document contemporary and historic innovation in craft, art, and design. In its exhibitions and educational programs, the Museum celebrates the creative process through which materials are crafted into works that enhance contemporary life.
History
The Museum first opened its doors in 1956 as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, with an original mission of recognizing the craftsmanship of contemporary American artists. Nurtured by the vision of philanthropist and craft patron Aileen Osborn Webb, the Museum mounted exhibitions that focused on the materials and techniques associated with craft disciplines. From its earliest years, the Museum celebrated the changing roles of craftsmanship in society, served as an important advocate for emerging artists, and linked art to industry.
From 1963 to 1987, under the directorship of Paul J. Smith, the Museum presented dynamic and often participatory exhibitions that reflected the social currents of the era and broke down hierarchies in the arts with the celebration of popular culture and mundane materials. In 1979, the Museum reopened as the American Craft Museum in an expanded location at 44 West 53rd Street. To accommodate its ever- growing programming, the Museum relocated again in 1986 to its 18,000-square-foot home at 40 West 53rd Street, where it would remain until 2008.

In this video we have a look at Eli and Edythe Broad's new contemporary art museum in Los Angeles, The Broad. We attended the press preview to have a look at the Broad's collection, and especially at the architecture of the new building that was designed by the New York-based architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. We had the pleasure to talk to the architecture firms founding partner Elizabeth Diller, who provided us with some basic information on the concept of the museum's architecture with its “veil-and-vault” idea, the challenges the architecture studio faced, and how they worked with the natural light.
The Broad is a new contemporary art museum built by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The Broad is home to the nearly 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which comprises prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art and offers free general admission. With its innovative “veil-and-vault” concept, the 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building will feature two floors of gallery space to showcase The Broad’s comprehensive collection and will be the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. Based in New York City, Diller Scofidio + Renfro is led by three partners – Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, and Charles Renfro. Selected projects include: World Trade Center Viewing Platform, New York, NY (2001); Blur, Swiss Expo, Lake Neuchâtel (2002); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2006); The Broad, Los Angeles, CA (2015); Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Expansion, New York, NY (in design).

While museums around the world are putting a lockdown on selfie sticks, a museum in the Philippines wants visitors to be part of the art on display. Situated at the southwest corner of Columbus Circle, the Museum of Arts and Design is a polarizing structure. Before you enter, be sure to take a good look at the building, a work of functional art in itself. A formerly windowless building that was renovated in 2008 to house the museum, the structure now features bands of glass that weave across the front of the building. Jewelry, glassware, textiles, furniture and decorative objects all hold esteem here. But before dismissing these pieces as glorified flea market finds, its important to know, the art here is not quite everyday. Artists earn their place in this New York museum only if their work is unique, groundbreaking and/or exceptional as deemed by the established and respected curators. You may not know most of the names found here, but you will definitely be intrigued by their creations. The museum also offers a ton of interactive and alternative programming, including film screenings, family workshops and free lectures by guest speakers, like former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Situated at the southwest corner of Columbus Circle, the Museum of Arts and Design is a polarizing structure. Before you enter, be sure to take a good look at the building, a work of functional art in itself. More than 20,000 custom ceramic tiles finished in a white iridescent glaze make up the facade creating an ever-changing reflection based on natural light. A formerly windowless building that was renovated in 2008 to house the museum, the structure now features bands of glass that weave across the front of the building. Enter the light-filled space and find a collection focused on form and function. This is art, just not of the traditional variety. Jewelry, glassware, textiles, furniture and decorative objects all hold esteem here. But before dismissing these pieces as glorified flea market finds, its important to know, the art here is not quite everyday. Artists earn their place in this New York museum only if their work is unique, groundbreaking and/or exceptional as deemed by the established and respected curators. You may not know most of the names found here, but you will definitely be intrigued by their creations. The museum also offers a ton of interactive and alternative programming, including film screenings, family workshops and free lectures by guest speakers, like former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Art in Island, located in a former bus station in Manila, capitalizes on the city's reputation as the Selfie Capital of the World with modified versions of famous works of art. The idea is for visitors to literally make themselves part of the picture.
Blyth Cambaya, corporate secretary of Art in Island, said, "Here, art paintings are not complete if you are not with them.. if you don't take pictures with them."
American tourist Jenna Eliel praised the museum's non-traditional approach.
"You have to be very serious in other museums. [In] this museum, you can really just let your goofy side out."

We attended the press preview to have a look at the Broad's collection, and especially at the architecture of the new building that was designed by the New York-based architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. We had the pleasure to talk to the architecture firms founding partner Elizabeth Diller, who provided us with some basic information on the concept of the museum's architecture with its “veil-and-vault” idea, the challenges the architecture studio faced, and how they worked with the natural light.
The Broad is a new contemporary art museum built by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The Broad is home to the nearly 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which comprises prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art and offers free general admission. With its innovative “veil-and-vault” concept, the 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building will feature two floors of gallery space to showcase The Broad’s comprehensive collection and will be the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. Based in New York City, Diller Scofidio + Renfro is led by three partners – Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, and Charles Renfro. Selected projects include: World Trade Center Viewing Platform, New York, NY (2001); Blur, Swiss Expo, Lake Neuchâtel (2002); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2006); The Broad, Los Angeles, CA (2015); Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Expansion, New York, NY (in design).
