The Prisoner is a 1955 drama film directed by Peter Glenville and based on the play by Bridget Boland. The film stars Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins.
In an unnamed East European country that has recently come under Communist tyranny in place of Nazi tyranny, a Cardinal (Alec Guinness) is falsely accused of treason. The Interrogator (Jack Hawkins), an old friend of the Cardinal's but now a Communist, is given the task of persuading him to make a public confession of treason.
The Interrogator eventually breaks though by showing how the Cardinal became a priest to escape from his childhood. To purge his sin, in the show trial the Cardinal confesses to every lie of which he is accused, and is released to face a silent, bewildered crowd.
There is a subplot about a young warder (Ronald Lewis) who is in love with a married woman (Jeannette Sterke), who wants to leave the country and join her husband.
The Cardinal was based on Croatian cardinal Aloysius Stepinac (1898–1960), who was a defendant in a trial in Croatia and on Hungarian cardinal József Mindszenty (1892–1975), who was charged in Hungary. The film was shot in England and Belgium (at Ostend and Bruges).

Plot: "Something has happened in the old far house (prison?) but no people says what: there were sliding doors, strange words, slaughters and an alone man confined in to a cellar..." Director Ruffino and his troupe went into a haunted prison in Palermo, now not more existing. They inspected all the building to find a natural location: when they went to the third floor they discovered a destroyed and "forgotten" area, rich of wrecks and nearly walled up. They entered in and found three doors: the second was closed and they had to break it, and when they where inside they find a very strange room, with an upset bed (it seems somebody was nearly inside in!), a still full wash basin and other objects, such as the room was still lived in.

From "The Chimes of Big Ben," some rare candor from Number 2 transcends the simple question of which side runs the village.
Differences of opinion betweem George Markstein and Mcgoohan as to the identity of Number 1.
Ida Lupino ("Amelia") unleashed all her frustration on poor pregnant Audrey Totter ("Joan") causing a riot among the female inmates.
You're the prisoner locked in your cell
You're living in your personal hell
Invisible bars block your view
They don't exist except for you
Free, why can't you see how easily
You could break those bars right down
New freedom found, travel around
And find out exactly why
Give it a try, living the lie
And try to solve the final clue
See if it's true, found out just who
The real enemy is you
Don't be afraid
Don't be deceived
A new world for you
Can be conceived
Don't tell me 'bout how the world isn't fair
How you'll live your life how you choose
I don't want to hear another excuse
How it ain't your fault when you lose
And you're the prisoner
Your mind's diseased, my mind is cured
I was the prisoner but never again
My worst enemy is now my friend
Brainwashed, you'll probably believe
I gave it up for a new reprieve
Free, why can't you see how easily
You could break those bars right down
New freedom found, travel around
And find out exactly why
Give it a try, living the lie
And try to solve the final clue
See if it's true, found out just who
The real enemy is you
You say you're political
