Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a classical American composer. He is considered one of the most influential music makers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimal music, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich.
Glass has distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Though his early mature music shares much with what is normally called "minimalist", he has since evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a "classicist", pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied such composers as Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger.
Glass has founded his namesake musical group, the Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards, and has written operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including seven string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.
"In the Penal Colony" ("In der Strafkolonie") (also translated as "In the Penal Settlement") is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919.
The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. "In the Penal Colony" describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin before letting him die, all in the course of twelve hours. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns more and more about the machine, including its origin and original justification.
There are only four characters, each named according to their role in the story. The Officer is the machine's operator, the Condemned is a man scheduled for execution, the Soldier is responsible for guarding the Condemned, and the Explorer is a European dignitary and visitor. In the original German, the Explorer is referred to as "der Forschungsreisende" — which is closer in translation to traveler/researcher/voyager — or simply as "der Reisende".
In the Penal Colony is a chamber opera in one act and 16 scenes composed by Philip Glass to an English-language libretto by Rudy Wurlitzer. The opera is based on Franz Kafka's German-language short story "In the Penal Colony". It was commissioned by ACT Theatre in Seattle, Washington, where it premiered on August 31, 2000. It has a running time of approximately 80 minutes and is scored for two singers (tenor and bass-baritone) and a string quintet.
Kafka's harrowing story "In the Penal Colony" ("In der Strafkolonie") was adapted as a play by Steven Berkoff in 1969. Glass chose to use it as the basis for an opera and selected the creative team. He and his long-time collaborator and former wife JoAnne Akalaitis worked on the idea on and off for three years before receiving a commission from ACT Theatre in Seattle. Akalaitis worked closely with the librettist, Rudy Wurlitzer, in adapting the story for the musical stage and directed the premiere production. Glass referred to the work as a "pocket opera" and deliberately chose the small-scale format of a chamber opera to increase the likelihood that it would be frequently performed.
Penal (originally Peñeraal of a Spanish origin) or पीनल is a town in south Trinidad and Tobago. It lies south of San Fernando and Debe, and north of Siparia. It was originally a rice and cocoa producing area but is now a rapidly expanding and developing town. The population is 12,281.
The heart of Penal contains many businesses while the outskirts focus on agricultural development. Penal has a police station, branches of three banks (Scotiabank, Republic Bank and First Citizens Bank) health facilities, photo studios, fast food restaurants, service stations and clothing stores.
Penal plays a major role in the energy supply to the nation's populace. Petrotrin, the national oil company, has a major sub-unit in Clarke Road and the National Gas Company has gas lines running through Penal that links the gas fields of the South East Coast and the industrial estates. One of the countries three major power generating plants owned by Powergen Ltd is located at Syne Village to the west of Penal.

This is a musical interpretation of "Into the Penal Colony" by Franz Kafka The music starts off with birds and the ocean sounds as to signify the Colony and the serenity and also emptiness of the scene where the traveler is, in the barren landscape where the execution is about to take place The piano lines that follow show the confusion and curiosity shown by the traveler when the machine is described to him. It also represents the serenity and peace of the condemned man. The violin that comes in signifies rising tensions between the officer and the traveler. The deep electrical guitar notes signify the nails ramming into the officer The second half of the song represents the solemn and morbid feeling after the execution in the teahouse where the Old Tomb is read. Meet a monstrous insect. What is "Kafka-esque?" What makes something "Kafka-eque," and something else "Shakespearean," or "Orwellian," "Byronic," "Brechtian," or "Shavian?" Do we have any authors now worthy of being transformed into an adjective?

"In this court, all men are equal." You have heard
those words many times before. "All men are equal." But
what about all women ? Are women the equal of men ?
There are those who tell us that they are.
Last week, an auspicious meeting of women was held in
Kalamazoo. The meeting was addressed by a very
prominent lady who is noted for her modesty. She is so
modest that she blindfolds herself when taking a bath.
Modesty runs in her family. She has a nephew who is
just ten years of age. Sometimes, the nephew says "I'm
going to the forbidden name store." The little fellow
is too modest to say "I'm going to the A & P." Well,
here is what that modest lady said to the gathering of
women in Kalamazoo :
"My sisters : Thetime has come when we must stand up
and declare ourselves. For too long have we been
trodden under the feet of men. For too long have we
been treated as second-class citizens by men who say
that we are only good for cooking their meals, mending
their socks, and raising their babies.
"You have a boyfriend, and he calls you his queen.
Then, when he marries you, he crowns you. These are the
kind of men who, when they become romantic or, I should
say, when they are in a certain mood, they want to kiss
you and kiss you and kiss you again.
"My sisters, I say to you : Put your faces against it,
and, if the man takes from you without your permission,
look him squarely in the face, roll your eyes at him,
and say to him ‘How dare you, you male chauvinist pig !
You put that kiss right back where you got it from.’
"My sisters, we are in bondage, and we need to be
liberated. Liberation is our cry. Just yesterday, I
talked with a woman who is the mother of fifteen
children. She said ‘Yes, I want to be liberated from
the bedroom.’
"And so, my sisters, the time has come when we must let
this male chauvinist understand that the hand that
changes the diapers is the hand that shall rule the
world.
"And now, my sisters, let us stand and sing our
national song. For the benefit of you who have not yet
memorized the words, here they are :
The woman's day is drawing near, it's written in the
stars
The fall of men is very near, proclaim it from your
cars.
Sisters, rise ! You flags unfurl ! Don't be a little
girl.
Say "Down with men, their power must end : Women shall
