Richard Gavin Bryars (/ˈɡævɪn braɪərz/; born 16 January 1943) is an English composer and double bassist. He has been active in, or has produced works in, a variety of styles of music, including jazz, free improvisation, minimalism, historicism, experimental music, avant-garde and neoclassicism.
Born in Goole, in East Yorkshire, England, Bryars studied philosophy at Sheffield University but became a jazz bassist during his three years as a philosophy student.
The first musical work for which he is remembered was his role as bassist in the trio Joseph Holbrooke, alongside guitarist Derek Bailey and drummer Tony Oxley. The trio began by playing relatively traditional jazz before moving into free improvisation. However, Bryars became dissatisfied with this when he saw a young bassist (later revealed to be Johnny Dyani) play in a manner which seemed to him to be artificial, and he became interested in composition instead.
Bryars's first works as a composer owe much to the New York School of John Cage (with whom he briefly studied), Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and minimalism. One of his earliest pieces, The Sinking of the Titanic (1969), is an indeterminist work which allows the performers to take a number of sound sources related to the sinking of the RMS Titanic and make them into a piece of music. The first recording of this piece appeared on Brian Eno's Obscure Records in 1975. The 1994 recording of this piece was remixed by Aphex Twin as Raising the Titanic (later collected on the 26 Mixes for Cash album).

Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet is a 1971 composition by Gavin Bryars. It is formed on a loop of an unknown homeless man singing a brief stanza. Rich harmonies, comprising string and brass, are gradually overlaid over the stanza. The piece was first recorded for use in a documentary which chronicles street life in and around Elephant and Castle and Waterloo, in London. When later listening to the recordings, Bryars noticed the clip was in tune with his piano and that it conveniently looped into 13 bars.[2] For the first LP recording, Bryars was limited to a duration of 25 minutes; with the invention of the cassette tape, Bryars was able to complete a 60-minute version of the piece; and later, with the advent of the CD, a 74-minute version. Bryars says: In 1971, when I lived in London, I...

Gavin Bryars The Fifth Century The Crossing PRISM Saxophone Quartet Donald Nally, conductor The music of English composer Gavin Bryars has long managed the distinction of being both “accessible and defiantly personal” (The New York Times). A deep yet unsentimental emotional resonance and a patient, contemplative view of time – whether relating to harmonic rhythm or human experience – are complementary characteristics that run through his instrumental, vocal and theatrical catalog like a red thread, the composer inspired by disparate spirits from Wagner and Satie to Cage and Silvestrov. The ECM New Series released multiple recordings of Bryars’ music in the 1980s and early ’90s, including the classic albums After the Requiem and Vita Nova. The first full ECM album from Bryars in decades ...

Recorded Live on 2nd February 2014 at Islington Mill, Salford PSAPPHA ENSEMBLE Benedict Holland & Catherine Yates - violins Vicci Wardman - viola Jennifer Langridge - cello Programme Note Originating as the musical equivalent of a work of conceptual art, this piece has various performing versions, often arising from particular occasions and environments. All the materials used are derived from research and speculations about the sinking of the "unsinkable" liner on April 14th 1912 after striking an iceberg on its maiden voyage. The initial starting point was the reported fact of the band playing the hymn tune "Autumn" in the final moments of the ship's sinking, together with other features of the disaster which generate musical or sounding performance material or which 'take the mind t...

This song was sung for my ATCL Singing Diploma exam - I had to submit it, as it wasn't part of Trinity College London's repertoire list. Luckily it was accepted, even though it is unaccompanied. 'Laude' (meaning: 'songs' in Italian) were Medieval works for unaccompanied voice, set to sacred texts - but not associated with any church. Gavin Bryars' Laude are based on such a 13th C. Cortona collection. In these compositions of his, Medieval Chant is seen from a contemporary perspective - so the 'old' is the 'new'. This Lauda (song), composed 2002 is an incantation to the Virgin Mary. Gavin Bryars says about his 'Laude'; "I relish the challenge of writing something so exposed, so naked and unadorned, where I cannot hide behind, say, a skillfully orchestrated accompaniment. Like a painter w...

Extract from a discussion at the Royal Academy of Music, London in February 2016. Composer Gavin Bryars talks with writer and broadcaster Paul Morley about the enduring fascination with the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic. ‘The Sinking of the Titanic’ could be considered as the musical equivalent of a piece of conceptual art: about an idea, not necessarily a sound, style or genre. The ship sank at 2.20am, while the band played on – the wireless operator reports that they played a hymn until the very end. Gavin Bryars talks about the research he undertook before writing his iconic work.

The Documentary “Sounds for The Sinking of the Titanic” was made for Hessischer Rudfunk, Germany, by director Andreas Skipis between 1999 and 2001. The film was shot in many unusual locations in the North of England - Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Ravenscar - as well as at places near the composer’s and in his studio. Special recordings were filmed of all the musical examples in the BBC Maida Vale’s historic Studio 3 (where Bing Crosby made his last recording three days before he died) and feature the Gavin Bryars Ensemble as well as the Hilliard Ensemble and a performance with the late Juan Muñoz.
The Sinking of the Titanic is a work by British minimalist composer Gavin Bryars. Inspired by the story that the band on the RMS Titanic continued to perform as the ship sank in 1912, it recreates how the music performed by the band would reverberate through the water some time after they ceased performing. A little seen documentary on the the rise of experimental music in the 1960's. The Radio Times describes it as "A celebration of the music movement which flourished in the US and UK during the 1960s. Featuring profiles of American composers John Cage, Terry Reilly and Steve Reich, as well as their British counterparts Cornelius Cardew, Gavin Bryars and Michael Nyman, who provided a contrast to the rigid musical dogmas of Stockhausen and his fellow serialists." © 2005 Associated-Rediffusion Television Productions
