Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a classical American composer. He is considered one of the most influential music makers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimal music, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich.
Glass has distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Though his early mature music shares much with what is normally called "minimalist", he has since evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a "classicist", pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied such composers as Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger.
Glass has founded his namesake musical group, the Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards, and has written operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including seven string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.
A cello concerto (sometimes called a violoncello concerto) is a concerto for solo cello with orchestra or, very occasionally, smaller groups of instruments.
These pieces have been written since the Baroque era if not earlier. However, unlike the violin, the cello had to face harsh competition from the older, well-established viola da gamba. As a result, few important cello concertos were written before the 19th century – with the notable exceptions of those by Vivaldi, C.P.E. Bach, Haydn and Boccherini. Its full recognition as a solo instrument came during the Romantic era with the concertos of Schumann, Saint-Saëns and Dvořák. From then on, cello concertos have become more and more frequent. Twentieth-century composers have made the cello a standard concerto instrument, along with the already-rooted piano and violin concertos; among the most notable concertos of the first half of the century are those of Elgar, Prokofiev, Barber and Hindemith. Most post-World War II composers (Shostakovich, Ligeti, Britten, Dutilleux, Lutoslawski and Penderecki among others) have written at least one.
Samuel Barber completed his Violin Concerto, Op. 14, in 1939. It is a work in three movements, lasting about 22 minutes.
In 1939, Philadelphia industrialist Samuel Simeon Fels commissioned Barber to write a violin concerto for Fels' ward, Iso Briselli, a graduate from the Curtis Institute of Music the same year as Barber, 1934. The Barber biographies written by Nathan Broder (1954) and Barbara B. Heyman (1992) discuss the genesis of the concerto during the period of the violin concerto's commission and subsequent year leading up to the first performance. Heyman interviewed Briselli and others familiar with the history in her publication. In late 2010, previously unpublished letters written by Fels, Barber, and Albert Meiff (Briselli's violin coach in that period) from the Samuel Simeon Fels Papers archived at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania became available to the public.
Barber accepted his advance and went to Switzerland to work on the concerto. Barber started working on the first two movements in Switzerland during the summer of 1939. He hoped to complete the concerto in the early fall to meet the October 1st deadline. His plans were interrupted, however, due to the impending war—all Americans were warned to leave Europe. In late August, he went to Paris and then took a ship to the USA, arriving in early September. After spending a short time with his family in West Chester, PA, he went to the Pocono Mountains to continue working on the concerto.
A concerto (from the Italian: concerto, plural concerti or, often, the anglicised form concertos) is a musical composition, whose characteristics have changed over time. In the 17th century, "sacred works for voices and orchestra were typically called concertos." J. S. Bach "was thus reflecting a long-standing tradition when he used the title `concerto' for many of the works that we know as cantatas.". But in recent centuries, up to the present, a concerto is a piece usually composed in three parts or movements, in which (usually) one solo instrument (for instance, a piano, violin, cello or flute) is accompanied by an orchestra or concert band.
The etymology is uncertain, but the word seems to have originated from the conjunction of the two Latin words conserere (meaning to tie, to join, to weave) and certamen (competition, fight): the idea is that the two parts in a concerto, the soloist and the orchestra or concert band, alternate episodes of opposition, cooperation, and independence in the creation of the music flow.
The Concerto Project is a collection of concerti written by Philip Glass. The series was begun in 2000 and contains eight works, the most famous of which is probably the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra. Some of the concerti in the volumes were written before the commencement of the project and were categorized into the series.
There are four volumes of the Project:
These concerti were all produced by Orange Mountain Music.

Philip Glass - Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra - Part 1
Following Glass's early operas, the conductor Dennis Russell Davies had been urging the composer to write more orchestral pieces, and the concerto marks Glass's first full-scale venture into non-theatrical orchestral composing.Glass's original concept was for a five-movement work, and Zukofsky requested a slow, high finale. As the composition process developed, however, Glass decided that five movements were too many and settled for a more conventional three-movement format. According to Glass, this traditional structure was not a concession to formality but simply a result of the work finding "a voice of its own" as the first and second movements developed into longer pieces than he had originally conceived. The work was composed with Glass's father, Ben, in mind, despite the latter's dea...

Glass begins by remarking that the legacy of Gandhi can be seen in the work of leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr. and the Dalai Lama, who advocate for nonviolent, social change and by inviting listeners to consider "Mad Rush" as a play between wrathful and peaceful deities. Philip Glass practices a piece from "The Hours" for a benefit... and then goes out to buy a loaf of bread. As for the idiots that claim Mr.Glass is mistaken about what he is playing, STFU in general. He is referring to an adaptation of Metamorphosis Two (from "Solo Piano") for the film "The Hours" renamed "Escape!" (track #12 on the Academy Award nominated soundtrack).

Filmed in the Arizona Desert outside Phoenix and in the Nevada desert around Las Vegas. I have taken my time before posting footage. I first flew a Phantom at the beginning of Feb but haven't had much opportunity to practise my flying skills as I live in London under the Heathrow flight path! There is a lot to learn and as you can see in this edit the best shots, well I think so, are the really controlled slow shots where I held my composition around the cacti. I still am nowhere near good yet. I need the controls to be second nature. The effective reversing of them when facing different ways stills screws with my head the same way switching between Canon and Nikon glass does with it's opposing focus direction! The holocaust is something I have thought about often as a child, especially as a 3-year-old with a vivid imagination and my father sitting me in front of the television to watch Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' film. I have always wanted to visit the German Nazi concentration camps and let the seriousness and power of it envelop me, humble me, and change me. It was one of the most chilling moments of my life, also because of how peaceful and beautiful the camps were. Spring flowers blooming bright and birds playfully jumping over the brick rubble. The calm breeze definitely added to its eeriness. Pol...

Composer Philip Glass, reflects on the revival of his first opera, "Einstein on the Beach," influences on his music, and composing music scores for films.
The first in a series of composer videos from The Music Sales Group. Philip Glass, early protagonist of the Minimalist movement, studied with Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger. His first job, assisting Ravi Shankar on a film soundtrack, heralded the start of his own successful cinema career, and to date he has scored over fifty movies. Early works tended to be abstract, but from the mid-1970s his attention shifted towards the stage. His first operatic triumph, Einstein on the Beach, did much to reinvigorate the international contemporary opera scene. Profoundly interested in traditional cultures, Glass often draws on Eastern traditions, as in Monsters of Grace (1997), a multimedia collaboration based on the writings of Rumi.

"In this court, all men are equal." You have heard
those words many times before. "All men are equal." But
what about all women ? Are women the equal of men ?
There are those who tell us that they are.
Last week, an auspicious meeting of women was held in
Kalamazoo. The meeting was addressed by a very
prominent lady who is noted for her modesty. She is so
modest that she blindfolds herself when taking a bath.
Modesty runs in her family. She has a nephew who is
just ten years of age. Sometimes, the nephew says "I'm
going to the forbidden name store." The little fellow
is too modest to say "I'm going to the A & P." Well,
here is what that modest lady said to the gathering of
women in Kalamazoo :
"My sisters : Thetime has come when we must stand up
and declare ourselves. For too long have we been
trodden under the feet of men. For too long have we
been treated as second-class citizens by men who say
that we are only good for cooking their meals, mending
their socks, and raising their babies.
"You have a boyfriend, and he calls you his queen.
Then, when he marries you, he crowns you. These are the
kind of men who, when they become romantic or, I should
say, when they are in a certain mood, they want to kiss
you and kiss you and kiss you again.
"My sisters, I say to you : Put your faces against it,
and, if the man takes from you without your permission,
look him squarely in the face, roll your eyes at him,
and say to him ‘How dare you, you male chauvinist pig !
You put that kiss right back where you got it from.’
"My sisters, we are in bondage, and we need to be
liberated. Liberation is our cry. Just yesterday, I
talked with a woman who is the mother of fifteen
children. She said ‘Yes, I want to be liberated from
the bedroom.’
"And so, my sisters, the time has come when we must let
this male chauvinist understand that the hand that
changes the diapers is the hand that shall rule the
world.
"And now, my sisters, let us stand and sing our
national song. For the benefit of you who have not yet
memorized the words, here they are :
The woman's day is drawing near, it's written in the
stars
The fall of men is very near, proclaim it from your
cars.
Sisters, rise ! You flags unfurl ! Don't be a little
girl.
Say "Down with men, their power must end : Women shall
