WA's newest Lotto millionaire was 'made redundant three weeks ago'

A Canning man who was made redundant three weeks ago has become WA's latest Lotto millionaire.

The man told Lotterywest he had lost his job after more than 10 years at the company, and had been frantically applying for jobs in order to ease the financial pressure.

What happens when you win lotto?

It's a dream for many but only a handful of lucky people will get to experience the process of what happens if you come across those winning numbers.

When he initially checked his ticket he thought his win was only a few hundred dollars - but he soon realised he was WA's latest millionaire.

The man scooped $1 million in the Division 1 Wednesday Lotto draw, and said the timing couldn't have been better.

"I can stop working on all those hundreds of job applications now! I'm certainly in no rush now!

"I've been playing Lotto for the last 15 years and it feels good to finally crack it."

The winning ticket was sold at The Lucky Charm in Karawara.

Lotterywest spokeswoman Pina Compagnone said City of South Perth was quickly establishing itself as a Lotto hotspot with the overnight windfall marking the second Division 1 win for the area in less than a month.

"It was only a few weeks ago we had a syndicate in the area take out over $4.2 million in prize money," Ms Compagnone said.

"This is also one in a long list of Division 1 wins for the Karawara store," she added.

Store owner Mike Casey said since 2001 his store had sold over eight Division 1 tickets with his customers sharing in a prize pool of over $37 million.

"In 2007 we actually made history for selling the winning $30 million OZ Lotto ticket," Mr Casey said.

"Back then it was the highest Lotto win that WA had ever seen," he added.

Mr Casey said while there was no formula to his run of Division 1 wins all his customers do have one thing in common.

"They took a chance and purchased a ticket," he said.

"It's also important to remember that when you don't have a win you're still contributing to the things that make WA great," he added.

WA has now produced 21 Division 1 Lotto winners this year who have shared in almost $58 million worth of prizes.
