Calamity Jane (Doris Day) sings "The Windy City" to her comrades upon her return from Chicago, where she had gone to entice the actress Adelaide Adams to perform at the local theatre. It's a beautiful number that reveals both her pride for Deadwood City and its people, as well as how sheltered she has been in the comfort of her little town. Coming down from a realization of how her masculine behaviour is perceived by other people, and how other women act and behave in other places, she may also be trying make a defensive claim about who and what she is.

Windy City Nights II is all about my continuing passion for shooting night timelapse photography in a city I truly appreciate for its inspiring views and beauty. This project is a continuation of my first Chicago Timelapse movie and I have been shooting for the past 18 months in my spare time in this amazing city to try and capture what your eyes do not see normally. There is something special about looking down on streets of gold and taking in the view.
Windy City Nights II is also about making new connections with Chicagoans and meeting new people who have assisted me throughout my journey. I truly appreciate all the new connections I have made who helped make this movie possible. My journey has been interesting with lots of rewards and filled with challenges. Chicago is not an easy city to get around with a few hundred pounds of gear and hauling it up to rooftops and other tight spaces where it sits in awkward places for long periods of time. After spending hours and days setting up shots and developing them, it's nice to see a pretty image come to life in the form of a timelapse. It really makes me appreciate this city and all it’s uniqueness it offers. It’s not an easy process as any timelapse photographer will tell you; however, it’s very rewarding in the end. I continue to learn and am always being inspired by a rich photography community Chicago has to offer.
The gear I used to make this project are Canon 5D Mark III’s and Canon 1DX’s camera bodies as well as numerous Canon L and Cine Lenses. Motion control gear I used was the Kessler Second Shooter paired with the CineSlider and the DitoGear OmniSliders. Software used to process my timelapse sequences were LRTimelapse, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.

Windy City Nights is the result of a two year journey through Chicago at night. I started this timelapse project back in April of 2011 after getting inspired by a video I saw posted on Vimeo titled “We are Chicago” by Ross Gerbasi. The video contained several night timelapse sequences that were captured in Chicago. Just prior to this, I had been shooting timelapses and started practicing the art on a regular basis. I had been shooting a lot of sports photography since 2005 and just really started to enjoy the art of timelapse. I have always enjoyed the challenge of night time photography and long exposures. There is something about the lights at night and the passage of time that is really captivating and what better place to capture this than the City of Chicago. Chicago is a really unique city, it has great architecture, the Chicago River and is surrounded by Lake Michigan. There is so much happening all the time and the lights at night here are truly amazing.
During this project, I have shot over 200,000 exposures, of raw digital files. With the raw files, exports and renders this accumulated to about 8 Terabytes of storage data. So the process of managing the files and backing up the data was a project in itself. I also had to choose which rendered sequences were going to be in the final movie. I had so many shots which did not make it in due to trying to keep the time of the movie around 6 minutes.
There were a lot of challenges with this project. The first is that I had a full time job and family. So finding the time to get down to the city and shoot was hard. About two years ago, I had scouted all the locations for my shots and wrote them down on a list. I set goals and went off my list. Navigating around Chicago can be a process when working primarily by myself and transporting a lot of gear around. When not transporting the motion control gear, it was pretty easy to get around on foot or my mountain bike I custom fit with heavy duty bags attached. When I transported my slider, I used pelican cases and a hand truck to move everything around.
The gear I used in making this movie were three Canon Cameras. One 5D Mark III, one 5D Mark II and one 1DX. I used a variety of Canon lens’ including the 24mm f/1.4, 24-105mm f/4, 14mm, f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. I used motion controlled equipment from DitoGear including the OmniSlider, both of 1 and 2 meter versions as well as the OmniHead. Windy
"Windy" is a pop music song written by Ruthann Friedman and recorded by The Association. Released in 1967, the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July of that year. Later in 1967, an instrumental version by jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery became his biggest Hot 100 hit when it peaked at #44. "Windy" was The Association's second U.S. number-one, following "Cherish" in 1966. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 4 song for 1967.
According to rumor, the original lyrics by Ruthann Friedman were about a man and The Association changed them to be about a woman.
"There are many explanations of who Windy actually was in Ruthann's life. She would have you know, she being me, Ruthann Friedman, that none of them are true. Windy was indeed a female and purely a fictitious character who popped into my head one fine day in 1967...
During the recording session the Association members, sure that they were in the middle of recording a hit, called the song writer, me again, in to sing on the fade at the end. I can be heard singing a blues harmony as the song fades out..."

Calamity Jane
Martha Jane Canary or Cannary (May 1, 1852 – August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman and professional scout, known for her claim of being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok, and fighting against Native Americans. Late in her life, she appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. She is said to have always exhibited kindness and compassion to others, especially to the sick and needy. This facet of her character, contrasted with her daredevil ways, helped make her a noted frontier figure. She was also known for her habit of wearing men's attire.
Early life
Much of the information about the early years of Calamity Jane's life comes from the autobiographical booklet she dictated in 1896, which was written for publicity purposes. She was about to begin a tour in which she would appear in dime museums around the United States, and the pamphlet was intended to help attract audiences. Some of the information in the pamphlet is exaggerated, or even completely inaccurate.

http://wtkphotography.com This timelapse is about a year in the making. I started sometime in June of 2010 and finished it on August 19, 2011. It wasn't constant work of course, just working on it every now and then. I'd estimate I have invested anywhere between 250 and 300 hours on it. Most of this was time I spent walking, biking, or riding the bus to locations I was shooting. There are very few locations I used a car to get to. Total frame count is about 28,000 frames and 85 different shots. All the frames weren't used in the final product as I edited down the clips. You will notice that some of the shots were shaky. San Francisco is a very windy city and even my heavy tripod couldn't remain still. In hindsight I should have bought a different head. All photos were shot in JPEG and then some light editing in Lightroom. Compiled into .mov clips in Quicktime Pro and then all brought together in Final Cut Pro. I started this project because there are so many people photographing the city that I wanted to capture it in a different way that most were not. Between the time I started and the time I finished, timelapses have become huge. It's amazing to see what fellow artists can make with even the most basic equipment. Windy City Nights II is all about my continuing passion for shooting night timelapse photography in a city I truly appreciate for its inspiring views and beauty. Chicago Timelapse Project - Windy City Nights
Windy City Nights is the result of a two year journey through Chicago at night. I started this timelapse project back in April of 2011 after getting inspired by a video I saw posted on Vimeo titled “We are Chicago” by Ross Gerbasi. The video contained several night timelapse sequences that were captured in Chicago. Just prior to this, I had been shooting timelapses and started practicing the art on a regular basis. I had been shooting a lot of sports photography since 2005 and just really started to enjoy the art of timelapse. I have always enjoyed the challenge of night time photography and long exposures. The City
http://wtkphotography.com This timelapse is about a year in the making. I started sometime in June of 2010 and finished it on August 19, 2011. It wasn't constant work of course, just working on it every now and then. I'd estimate I have invested anywhere between 250 and 300 hours on it. Most of this was time I spent walking, biking, or riding the bus to locations I was shooting. There are very few locations I used a car to get to. Total frame count is about 28,000 frames and 85 different shots. All the frames weren't used in the final product as I edited down the clips. You will notice that some of the shots were shaky. Windy City | Kitesurfing Sessions | Wellington, New Zealand
Wellington in New Zealand is a great little city - cafes, culture & a great outdoor lifestyle. As for surf, it does get good on occasions with large swells generated from deep lows coming up from the south, but the days of decent surf in Wellington are few & far between. The one thing that gets me out amongst the waves more often is kitesurfing. You see, Wellington is one of the windiest cities in the world...so to take advantage of that, I grab my surfboard & add a kite for more time out on the water. This clip is from a few of those sessions.

Windy City Nights II is all about my continuing passion for shooting night timelapse photography in a city I truly appreciate for its inspiring views and beauty. I truly appreciate all the new connections I have made who helped make this movie possible. My journey has been interesting with lots of rewards and filled with challenges. Chicago is not an easy city to get around with a few hundred pounds of gear and hauling it up to rooftops and other tight spaces where it sits in awkward places for long periods of time. After spending hours and days setting up shots and developing them, it's nice to see a pretty image come to life in the form of a timelapse. It really makes me appreciate this city and all it’s uniqueness it offers. It’s not an easy process as any timelapse photographer will tell you; however, it’s very rewarding in the end. I continue to learn and am always being inspired by a rich photography community Chicago has to offer.
The gear I used to make this project are Canon 5D Mark III’s and Canon 1DX’s camera bodies as well as numerous Canon L and Cine Lenses. Motion control gear I used was the Kessler Second Shooter paired with the CineSlider and the DitoGear OmniSliders. Software used to process my timelapse sequences were LRTimelapse, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.

It really makes me appreciate this city and all it’s uniqueness it offers. It’s not an easy process as any timelapse photographer will tell you; however, it’s very rewarding in the end. I continue to learn and am always being inspired by a rich photography community Chicago has to offer.
The gear I used to make this project are Canon 5D Mark III’s and Canon 1DX’s camera bodies as well as numerous Canon L and Cine Lenses. Motion control gear I used was the Kessler Second Shooter paired with the CineSlider and the DitoGear OmniSliders. Software used to process my timelapse sequences were LRTimelapse, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.

Windy City Nights is the result of a two year journey through Chicago at night. I started this timelapse project back in April of 2011 after getting inspired by a video I saw posted on Vimeo titled “We are Chicago” by Ross Gerbasi. The video contained several night timelapse sequences that were captured in Chicago. Just prior to this, I had been shooting timelapses and started practicing the art on a regular basis. I had been shooting a lot of sports photography since 2005 and just really started to enjoy the art of timelapse. I have always enjoyed the challenge of night time photography and long exposures. There is something about the lights at night and the passage of time that is really captivating and what better place to capture this than the City of Chicago. Chicago is a really unique city, it has great architecture, the Chicago River and is surrounded by Lake Michigan. There is so much happening all the time and the lights at night here are truly amazing.
During this project, I have shot over 200,000 exposures, of raw digital files. With the raw files, exports and renders this accumulated to about 8 Terabytes of storage data. So the process of managing the files and backing up the data was a project in itself. I also had to choose which rendered sequences were going to be in the final movie. I had so many shots which did not make it in due to trying to keep the time of the movie around 6 minutes.
There were a lot of challenges with this project. The first is that I had a full time job and family. So finding the time to get down to the city and shoot was hard. About two years ago, I had scouted all the locations for my shots and wrote them down on a list. I set goals and went off my list. Navigating around Chicago can be a process when working primarily by myself and transporting a lot of gear around. When not transporting the motion control gear, it was pretty easy to get around on foot or my mountain bike I custom fit with heavy duty bags attached. When I transported my slider, I used pelican cases and a hand truck to move everything around.
The gear I used in making this movie were three Canon Cameras. One 5D Mark III, one 5D Mark II and one 1DX. I used a variety of Canon lens’ including the 24mm f/1.4, 24-105mm f/4, 14mm, f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. This timelapse is about a year in the making. I started sometime in June of 2010 and finished it on August 19, 2011. It wasn't constant work of course, just working on it every now and then. I'd estimate I have invested anywhere between 250 and 300 hours on it. Most of this was time I spent walking, biking, or riding the bus to locations I was shooting. There are very few locations I used a car to get to. Total frame count is about 28,000 frames and 85 different shots. All the frames weren't used in the final product as I edited down the clips. You will notice that some of the shots were shaky. San Francisco is a very windy city and even my heavy tripod couldn't remain still. In hindsight I should have bought a different head. All photos were shot in JPEG and then some light editing in Lightroom. Compiled into .mov clips in Quicktime Pro and then all brought together in Final Cut Pro.
I started this project because there are so many people photographing the city that I wanted to capture it in a different way that most were not. Between the time I started and the time I finished, timelapses have become huge. It's amazing to see what fellow artists can make with even the most basic equipment.

My wife and I recently spent three days in Chicago. I've wanted to visit there for a long time (having been a Bulls fan since I was a kid) so it was great to go exploring round this fine city. This video is a short collection of some of the sights and things we saw during our stay. It was also my first attempt at Lens Whacking, and I'm very pleased with how the footage turned out. Also, as a slight change, this was edited and graded entirely in Adobe Premiere Pro (no After Effects this time!).

Wellington in New Zealand is a great little city - cafes, culture & a great outdoor lifestyle. As for surf, it does get good on occasions with large swells generated from deep lows coming up from the south, but the days of decent surf in Wellington are few & far between. The one thing that gets me out amongst the waves more often is kitesurfing. You see, Wellington is one of the windiest cities in the world...so to take advantage of that, I grab my surfboard & add a kite for more time out on the water. This clip is from a few of those sessions.

http://wtkphotography.com This timelapse is about a year in the making. I started sometime in June of 2010 and finished it on August 19, 2011. It wasn't constant work of course, just working on it every now and then. I'd estimate I have invested anywhere between 250 and 300 hours on it. Most of this was time I spent walking, biking, or riding the bus to locations I was shooting. There are very few locations I used a car to get to. Total frame count is about 28,000 frames and 85 different shots. All the frames weren't used in the final product as I edited down the clips. You will notice that some of the shots were shaky. The Windy City
My wife and I recently spent three days in Chicago. I've wanted to visit there for a long time (having been a Bulls fan since I was a kid) so it was great to go exploring round this fine city. This video is a short collection of some of the sights and things we saw during our stay. It was also my first attempt at Lens Whacking, and I'm very pleased with how the footage turned out. Also, as a slight change, this was edited and graded entirely in Adobe Premiere Pro (no After Effects this time!). Windy City | Kitesurfing Sessions | Wellington, New Zealand
Wellington in New Zealand is a great little city - cafes, culture & a great outdoor lifestyle. As for surf, it does get good on occasions with large swells generated from deep lows coming up from the south, but the days of decent surf in Wellington are few & far between. The one thing that gets me out amongst the waves more often is kitesurfing. You see, Wellington is one of the windiest cities in the world...so to take advantage of that, I grab my surfboard & add a kite for more time out on the water. This clip is from a few of those sessions.

Windy City Nights II is all about my continuing passion for shooting night timelapse photography in a city I truly appreciate for its inspiring views and beauty. This project is a continuation of my first Chicago Timelapse movie and I have been shooting for the past 18 months in my spare time in this amazing city to try and capture what your eyes do not see normally. There is something special about looking down on streets of gold and taking in the view.
Windy City Nights II is also about making new connections with Chicagoans and meeting new people who have assisted me throughout my journey. I truly appreciate all the new connections I have made who helped make this movie possible. My journey has been interesting with lots of rewards and filled with challenges. Chicago is not an easy city to get around with a few hundred pounds of gear and hauling it up to rooftops and other tight spaces where it sits in awkward places for long periods of time. After spending hours and days setting up shots and developing them, it's nice to see a pretty image come to life in the form of a timelapse. It really makes me appreciate this city and all it’s uniqueness it offers. It’s not an easy process as any timelapse photographer will tell you; however, it’s very rewarding in the end. I continue to learn and am always being inspired by a rich photography community Chicago has to offer.
The gear I used to make this project are Canon 5D Mark III’s and Canon 1DX’s camera bodies as well as numerous Canon L and Cine Lenses. Motion control gear I used was the Kessler Second Shooter paired with the CineSlider and the DitoGear OmniSliders. Software used to process my timelapse sequences were LRTimelapse, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.

Windy City Nights is the result of a two year journey through Chicago at night. I started this timelapse project back in April of 2011 after getting inspired by a video I saw posted on Vimeo titled “We are Chicago” by Ross Gerbasi. The video contained several night timelapse sequences that were captured in Chicago. Just prior to this, I had been shooting timelapses and started practicing the art on a regular basis. I had been shooting a lot of sports photography since 2005 and just really started to enjoy the art of timelapse. I have always enjoyed the challenge of night time photography and long exposures. There is something about the lights at night and the passage of time that is really captivating and what better place to capture this than the City of Chicago. Chicago is a really unique city, it has great architecture, the Chicago River and is surrounded by Lake Michigan. There is so much happening all the time and the lights at night here are truly amazing.
During this project, I have shot over 200,000 exposures, of raw digital files. With the raw files, exports and renders this accumulated to about 8 Terabytes of storage data. So the process of managing the files and backing up the data was a project in itself. I also had to choose which rendered sequences were going to be in the final movie. I had so many shots which did not make it in due to trying to keep the time of the movie around 6 minutes.
There were a lot of challenges with this project. The first is that I had a full time job and family. So finding the time to get down to the city and shoot was hard. About two years ago, I had scouted all the locations for my shots and wrote them down on a list. I set goals and went off my list. Navigating around Chicago can be a process when working primarily by myself and transporting a lot of gear around. When not transporting the motion control gear, it was pretty easy to get around on foot or my mountain bike I custom fit with heavy duty bags attached. When I transported my slider, I used pelican cases and a hand truck to move everything around.
The gear I used in making this movie were three Canon Cameras. One 5D Mark III, one 5D Mark II and one 1DX. I used a variety of Canon lens’ including the 24mm f/1.4, 24-105mm f/4, 14mm, f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8. I used motion controlled equipment from DitoGear including the OmniSlider, both of 1 and 2 meter versions as well as the OmniHead. I also used the eMotimo TB3 which can be purchased here: http://emotimo.com/ .

This timelapse is about a year in the making. I started sometime in June of 2010 and finished it on August 19, 2011. It wasn't constant work of course, just working on it every now and then. I'd estimate I have invested anywhere between 250 and 300 hours on it. Most of this was time I spent walking, biking, or riding the bus to locations I was shooting. There are very few locations I used a car to get to. Total frame count is about 28,000 frames and 85 different shots. All the frames weren't used in the final product as I edited down the clips. You will notice that some of the shots were shaky. San Francisco is a very windy city and even my heavy tripod couldn't remain still. In hindsight I should have bought a different head. All photos were shot in JPEG and then some light editing in Lightroom. Compiled into .mov clips in Quicktime Pro and then all brought together in Final Cut Pro.
I started this project because there are so many people photographing the city that I wanted to capture it in a different way that most were not. Between the time I started and the time I finished, timelapses have become huge. It's amazing to see what fellow artists can make with even the most basic equipment.

My wife and I recently spent three days in Chicago. I've wanted to visit there for a long time (having been a Bulls fan since I was a kid) so it was great to go exploring round this fine city. This video is a short collection of some of the sights and things we saw during our stay. It was also my first attempt at Lens Whacking, and I'm very pleased with how the footage turned out. Also, as a slight change, this was edited and graded entirely in Adobe Premiere Pro (no After Effects this time!).

Wellington in New Zealand is a great little city - cafes, culture & a great outdoor lifestyle. As for surf, it does get good on occasions with large swells generated from deep lows coming up from the south, but the days of decent surf in Wellington are few & far between. The one thing that gets me out amongst the waves more often is kitesurfing. You see, Wellington is one of the windiest cities in the world...so to take advantage of that, I grab my surfboard & add a kite for more time out on the water. This clip is from a few of those sessions.
