The song "Backwater Blues" is a blues and jazz standard. It was written by Bessie Smith, and recorded (under the title "Back-water Blues") by her (vocals) and Jimmy Johnson (piano) on February 17, 1927.
The song has long been associated with the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. However, that flood was at its worst some two months after the song was written. Study of Smith's touring itinerary, of testimony of fellow entertainers who toured with her, and of contemporary reports indicates that the song was written in response to the flood which struck Nashville, Tennessee on Christmas Day 1926. The Cumberland River, which flows through the city, rose 56 feet (17 m) above its normal level, still a record as of 2014.
The lyrics are in the often-used AAB blues format. The words vary from one performer to another; this opening verse is representative:
When it rains five days, and the skies turn dark as night (x2)
There's trouble taking place in the lowland that night.
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.
Backwater or Backwaters may refer to:
Bessie Smith (April 15, 1894 – September 26, 1937) was an American blues singer.
Nicknamed The Empress of the Blues, Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. She is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era and, along with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on other jazz vocalists.
The 1900 census indicates that Bessie Smith was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in July 1892, a date provided by her mother. However, the 1910 census recorded her birthday as April 15, 1894, a date that appears on all subsequent documents and was observed by the entire Smith family. Census data also contribute to controversy about the size of her family. The 1870 and 1880 censuses report three older half-siblings, while later interviews with Smith's family and contemporaries did not include these individuals among her siblings.
Bessie Smith was the daughter of Laura (born Owens) and William Smith. William Smith was a laborer and part-time Baptist preacher (he was listed in the 1870 census as a "minister of the gospel", in Moulton, Lawrence, Alabama.) He died before his daughter could remember him. By the time she was nine, she had lost her mother and a brother as well. Her older sister Viola took charge of caring for her siblings.

Este es un disco muy bueno; una gran voz, la Reina del Blues Dinah Washington, y unos temas espectaculares, las canciones de la gran Bessie Smith. El disco es del 57.

Nuthin' fancy here, just one guitar and voice in real time. Well OK, yes, a bit of fancy actually toward the end when I octaved-down the guitar. I don't know who had the first claim on this one, but what the hey. I dedicate this to all the folks out there who are feeling like the water's getting mighty deep these days. That would be a good many people, I believe. Thus beginneth the OGAVIRT series.

It rained five days, Lord and the clouds turned as dark
as night
It rained five days, and the clouds turned as dark as
night
Lord, that was really enough trouble to make a poor
man, wonder where in the world to go
I got up one mornin', poor me I couldn't get even get
out of my door
I got up one mornin', poor me I couldn't get even get
out of my door
Lord, that was really enough trouble to make a poor
man, wonder where in the world to go
Now they rowed a little boat, just about five miles
across the farm
Yeah, they rowed a little boat, down about five miles
across the farm
Lord, I packed up all of my clothes and throwed them in
And I declare they rowed poor old Bill along
Then I went and I stood up on a high, high old lonesome
hill
Yes, I went and I stood up on a high, high old lonesome
hill
Lord, and all I could do was look down on the house,
baby where I used to live
Now it thundered and it lightnin'd, Lord and the wind,
wind began to blow
Now it thundered and it lightnin'd, Lord and the wind,
wind began to blow
Lord, there was thousands and thousands of poor people
